The hot summer breeze hit me as I stepped out of the hospital, and I wondered why I had chosen to wear thick clothing.

Landon had told me it would only get hotter, but I'd insisted on ‘’covering up' properly.

“Careful, now.” The driver, a Somalian man with an accent, said, as he guided me towards the car.

This was another privilege I enjoyed from being loved by a wealthy man like Landon. I had my own personal driver.

“You should've waited for me inside.” he chided gently as he helped me inside the car.

I smiled at him, hoping that he would not notice how scared I was inside.

Dr. Knox's words still rang in my head. It was hard to forget. I had a real chance of seeing again.

“The Dr. had offered to walk me, besides you were late.” I replied, turning my face to the window as he drove out of the hospital.

I could see the blurry outline of the buildings and trees as we sped past.

My thoughts went back to the Dr's words. A surgery that could restore my sight, felt unreal. I didn't want to hope again.

How many times in the past have I hoped? Only for it to be cruelly dashed. But the Dr had seemed so sure, so confident…

I imagined telling Landon, seeing his face for the first time, seeing him smile, his eyes. I wanted so badly to know what color they were.

It was because of him that I hoped this could work. Landon was perfect and he deserved a perfect woman. Not an impaired one.

When we got to the house, the driver opened the car door, his strong hands steadying me as I stepped out into the driveway.

He led me to the door, and then stopped. He never came inside the house with me.

I never needed help indoors because I had a cane, which was always propped by the door for easy access.

Landon never made me feel like an inconvenience because of my blindness, but I knew he didn't want people knowing I was blind, which was why he always made me wear designer sunglasses, and preferred to guide me himself when he could in public, and when he couldn't, the driver would.

I heard the driver's footsteps shuffle away, and I reached for the cane by the door. But then I noticed that the door was slightly open.

That was odd. Landon had locked the doors on our way out, I was sure of that. Or had he come home early?

Maybe he'd forgotten something?

My fingers hovered over the handle for a moment, then stepped inside quietly, while tapping my cane softly against the floor.

The familiar muted colors of the living room never failed to make me comfortable.

Then I heard it. Laughter, light and feminine.

My heart stopped and I arched my ear as I climbed the stairs. Were we being robbed?

The grip on my cane tightened, the smooth wood pressing into my palm. But as I got closer, I realized that the sound was not violent, but playful and intimate.

It wasn’t until her next words that my stomach truly churned.

“Landon you're terrible,” the woman's voice purred, like she was sharing a private joke.

I could not breathe. There was a pause, then Landon's deep unmistakable chuckle followed. It was a sound I knew like the beat of my own heart.

“You make it easy to get distracted.” He murmured, his voice so gentle, so easy.

Drowning. That was the only word that could describe how I truly felt. He wasn't saying those words to me.

He was saying them to someone else.

I stood there, willing my legs to move, but they didn't. What the hell was going on?

My Landon? It couldn't be…

“Do you think she'll find out?” The woman asked.

“She's too trusting, and she loves me. Even if she finds out, she has nowhere to go. She's blind. I own her.” Landon's voice was sure, almost amused like he was telling a joke.

I was the joke. The words hit me like a slap.

Blind…..

He said it so casually as if the fact that I could not see made me an object. Something to own and control.

“Don't forget the house you promised to get me. I've spoken with the realtor.” The woman said.

Landon chuckled. “Anything for you. I promise, I'll make you happy once all this is over.”

“You're so evil, and I can't wait to be with you.” The woman replied, giggling.

“Besides, it's not like she'd ever suspect anything. She can't even see what's right in front of her. I can't wait to leave her.”

“Then what's stopping you?”

Landon didn't reply, but then I heard more giggling and sounds.

I held my cane tightly, refusing to breathe. Maybe I'd fallen asleep on the ride here.

To make sure, I pinched myself, and winced at the sharp pain. This was not a dream.

Landon was cheating on me.

The betrayal felt like glass slicing through my skin. My vision was a blur of colors but I felt every inch of the betrayal like I was staring right at it.

I wanted to leave, to turn and run away, but I still couldn't move. It was like my feet were glued to the floor and they had minds of their own.

“I should go.” The woman said after a while. She was no longer giggling now. “But I'll see you soon?” her voice was soft and affectionate, and something coiled inside my heart.

“Of course, my precious.” He replied, his voice was low, seductive, the kind of tone he used to save just for me.

He never called me any nicknames, and somehow that hurt more. It was the final blow.

"Landon?" I whispered, almost unable to form words. Yet I didn't even wait for an answer. Somehow, I knew that he had already made a decision. He had left me behind.

My fingers went numb around the cane as I struggled to keep my breathing steady. My heart pounded so loudly in my chest, that I was afraid they might hear it.

I felt like I was spiraling, and losing my balance. Like I was falling from a tall height. I have been living a lie.

My life had been a mirage.

I should have burst into the room, demanded an explanation, made a scene, but all I could do was let out a strangled breath.

Suddenly, the sound of footsteps came toward the door.

I took a shaky step back, barely managing to slip out of view before I heard her heels click down the hall and the faint sound of the front door closing.

Silence settled over the apartment, thick and suffocating. My ears rang from it.

My legs felt like jelly, but I forced myself to straighten, to breathe.

Then I heard Landon sigh, like he was relieved she was gone, and the sound clawed at my heart.

A moment later, his footsteps moved back toward the bedroom, his voice drifting softly as if talking to himself.

“She’ll never know…she trusts me too much….”

I swallowed hard, blinking away the hot tears that stung my eyes.

I didn’t need to see to know the truth.

I did not open the e-mail.Not that night. Nor the next morning. Not even after reconsidering the subject line—We have to discuss something.Landon needed a lot of things. Closure. Forgiveness. Maybe a soul.I did not intend to provide anything else.I opened up a browser and typed in two words that I had forgotten: personal reinvention. The salon smelled of citrus and hairspray. I sat beneath the harsh glow of vanity lights while a stranger studied my face like a canvas she’d been aching to paint."So," she said, taking her gloves off, "what are we going to do today?"I looked at my reflection—flat, lifeless brown hair, cheeks still pale from the hospital, lips pressed into a firm, unsmiling line.I pressed the glass gently. "We're deleting her."She raised one impeccably arched eyebrow. "Erasing?""She is too soft. She forgives people who don't deserve forgiveness. She stays quiet when she should be speaking out."The stylist smiled mischievously. "Oh, I see. We’re making a monster.

  • BLINDED BY SEDUCTION    Chapter Seven: What does it all mean?

The hospital smelled of antiseptic and shattered hopes. It felt odd entering through the doorway again—this time without cane to lean on or hand to cling to. I went in without support, shoulders squared, sunglasses shielding still-sensitive eyes. It was all sharper. Brighter. As if waiting for me to awaken.Dr. Knox's office was located at the far end of the hall. The receptionist double-taked when she noticed me."Elara?" she spoke softly, nearly whispering. "You"Such as one who is seeing for the first time?" I suggested, tilting the brim of my spectacles with a half-smile.She pasted on a smile. "Dr. Knox is expecting you. Go right on in."I knocked, then went in.Dr. Knox looked up from her tablet. "There she is." She stood up from her seat, approaching me with a smile. "Let me take a look at you."I removed the sunglasses, and we sat there staring at one another for some time. Her eyes searched me intensely."Tracking is fine. Any pressure sensations? Flashes of light? Headache?"

The sunbeam warmed my skin as I walked through the glass doors of the hospital. It should have been like starting over, like having a miracle set before me. But instead, I walked as if I had entered right in the eye of the storm.Mark was leaning against the car in a relaxed pose, arms crossed, sunglasses on the nose as always. He stood up straight when he saw me. "Miss Matthews," he said, opening the back door as though nothing had changed.I hesitated. “Please, don’t call Landon.”His brow furrowed. “Ma’am?”I adjusted the straps on my bag. “Don’t tell him I’m out. Not yet.”His lips had begun to open as if he were about to ask something, but an abrupt tension in my posture restrained him."I comprehend," he finally said.I nodded and moved over into the back seat. "I have to go to the family guesthouse, not the penthouse,""One in Rosehill?" he asked, briefly glancing over his shoulder in my direction."Indeed, serene. I yearn for such calmness."Mark declined to take the issue fur

  • BLINDED BY SEDUCTION    Chapter Five: The Awakening

Something seemed amiss.I blinked twice, then again, slowly. The pain in the back of my eyes burned, yet it was subdued—muted. The world wasn't black. It was something else. Liquid light nudged the edges of my vision, like the first hint of day through mist."Elara?" There came a voice through the mist. Filling. Warm.I shifted my head slightly, and the motion had the sensation of pulling my skull through sandpaper."Elara, do you hear me?" The voice came closer—Dr. Knox.I had a dry mouth, though I could muster a rasp. "I can hear you."A sigh of relief. "Well. That's fine. You certainly scared us enough with your post-op experience.""Did. did it work?" My voice cracked, though I barely noticed. My fingertips hurt on the rough surface of the hospital bed. There existed a pause. I could feel it before she went on.You tell me.I wrenched them open as far as I could. Light blinded me: searing, brilliant, intruding, yes. Light. No dark outlines dancing in the dark. No hues. Burning, re

  • BLINDED BY SEDUCTION    Chapter Four: Left with no Choice

The bathroom floor was cold.I laid on the cold bathroom floor, every inch of my body screaming in pain. My head was in a war zone, But the worst part? The silence. It was suffocating, like the air itself had turned heavy and still. I tried to sit up, but my limbs felt like lead. Then, a strange pressure pressed down upon my eyelids, the feeling of being sucked into some kind of dark, open space. My hand flew to my face, fingers shaking. Wet. Sticky.Blood.It trickled into my fingers, a slow tide that felt heavy and suffocating. Panic clawed at me, I tried to open my eyes, but it was useless. The effort itself was painful, and the outlines I once could see were gone.I could only see pitch darkness. My right eye, burned like fire, the pain so strong it sent my whole body tumbling back down when I tried again to stand up.I can't see.It hit my brain like a streak of lightning, and I felt breathless, frozen in fear. Now, as I listened to his hearty laughter and the ‘pit pat’ of the water as it hit the ground, I wondered how I had not noticed it.“I miss you, baby…” I heard him say, and I took a step back. I didn't want to hear anymore.I'd stepped backward, and the world blurred for a second before coming back into harsh focus. My brain was screaming at me to run and to just pretend I hadn't heard any of it. “So do you need me right now? I could…”Another trembling step back from the bathroom door, every word from his mouth made it harder to breathe. This was not the Landon I knew. The more I listened, the more I felt like I wasn't even real.Like this all wasn't real.He laughed-a rich sound with that same flow that once drew me to him like a moth to a flame. Now it was all wrong-twisted. It showed me something that I had been too blind to see, too bl

I bit my lower lip as I moaned softly.“Good morning beautiful…” Beside me, my boyfriend's Landon's fingers played with my nipples under my lacy nightwear.I kept my eyes closed enjoying the sensation, enjoying his husky morning voice against my ear.“Thank..thank you for the…” I trailed off as his hand wandered down my body and settled on my thighs.“Thank you for what?” His voice was so close that I could feel his breath on my cheek. I could not think properly, not with his hands on my body. “Thank you for picking this night dress out last night.” I finally said, throwing my head back as his finger found its way to my panties. He chuckled, and placed a kiss on my neck that sent shivers down my spine. Everyday, I thanked God for a man like Landon.“Don't be silly. I have done that every night since we got into this relationship, years ago. When will you stop thanking me?” He didn't stop his sweet assault. His thumb grazed my clit, and I bit back a sharp moan.“I'm practically blin
