Chapter 5: Shadows on Marble

The heavy oak doors of Lord Wayer’s private sanctuary closed with a hollow, resounding thud that felt entirely too final.

I stood in the center of the inner council chamber, adjacent to Joss’s bedchamber, staring at the long mahogany table stretched out before me. It was littered with intelligence scrolls, mapped trade routes, decrypted cipher ribbons, and wax seals bearing the sigils of the Southern Shadow Guilds,my former home, my former masters.

My hands trembled slightly as I pulled the dark velvet robe tighter around my chest. I hated the tremor. I hated that every sharp movement, every sudden rise in temperature, reminded me of the hidden, pulsing knot of heat settling deep in my abdomen.

Master Edwin’s potion was still working through my bloodstream, a strange, heavy warmth that blunted the worst of my morning nausea while making my skin unnaturally sensitive to every draft of cold mountain air filtering through the high stone arches.

"You look like a ghost standing among dead men's letters, Spymaster."

I didn't turn around. I didn't need to. I knew the heavy, unhurried cadence of Joss Wayer’s tread. He had shed his tunic, standing now in a loose linen shirt with the sleeves rolled to his elbows, exposing arms laced with faint, silvery scars earned in battles I had only read about in shadow reports.

"I am looking at my old life," I said, my voice rasping softly against the quiet room. "Or what's left of it after your border guards intercepted our third courier line."

Joss stepped up behind me, stopping close enough that I could feel the intense, furnace-like heat radiating off his body. He didn't touch me, not yet but his presence was a heavy, suffocating pressure that made my pulse leap against my collarbone.

"Your third courier line was sloppy," Joss observed coolly, reaching over my shoulder to pick up a rolled parchment sealed with red wax. His arm brushed against mine, and an electric shock of unwanted recognition flared straight down my spine to my lower belly. "Grandmaster Vane relies too heavily on old mountain trails. He assumes the North does not watch the passes when the snow begins to fall."

"Grandmaster Vane isn't sloppy," I countered, my jaw tightening as I forced myself not to pull away from his heat. "He was testing your perimeter. He knew you'd catch the courier. He wanted to see how fast your shadow-scouts respond."

Joss hummed softly, a low sound in the back of his throat that sounded dangerously like approval. "And now he knows I respond in under four minutes. Which leaves him with a problem. his top assassin is missing, his courier network is compromised, and the Northern Citadel hasn't posted an execution banner on the south wall."

I turned my head slightly, catching the sharp outline of Joss’s jaw in the pale morning light. His golden eyes were already fixed on me, tracking the sharp rise and fall of my chest.

"He knows I'm alive," I whispered. "And Grandmaster Vane does not leave living failures behind."

"He won't get within ten miles of these walls," Joss said flatly, his tone shifting into that absolute, terrifying authority that made the air in the room feel heavy. "Not while you are in this condition."

"This 'condition' is the only reason I'm not hanging from your ramparts, Lord Wayer," I spat, turning fully to face him.

The movement was too quick. A sudden, sharp stitch of pain shot across my lower stomach, accompanied by a dizzying rush of black spots across my vision. My knees gave out before I could catch my balance.

Joss moved with terrifying, instantaneous speed.

Before my knees hit the cold marble floor, his arms locked around my waist and under my knees, scooping me up against his chest as if I weighed no more than a bundle of silk. He let out a low, dangerous growl, a sound born of pure, feral instinct,as he carried me straight toward the heavy velvet couch positioned beside the roaring hearth.

"Let me go!" I snarled, weak hands pushing futilely against his shoulders. "I just lost my balance"

"Shut up, Gawin," Joss commanded, setting me down onto the plush velvet cushions with frustrating, agonizing gentleness.

He didn't pull away. Instead, he dropped to one knee before the couch, effectively trapping me between his large frame and the armrest. His hand hovered over my stomach for a split second before pressing firmly down against my robe.

The moment his palm made contact, the cold, sharp ache in my abdomen melted away. His royal magic surged out from his skin, rich, heavy, and undeniably dominant flooding into my strained Aethel-Core like rain hitting parched soil.

I let out an embarrassing, shuddering breath, my head falling back against the velvet cushions as the relief washed over me. I hated myself for it. I hated how my body drank in his magic, how the hidden life inside me practically leaped toward his touch, hungry and demanding.

"You're exhausting your core," Joss growled, his golden eyes burning with dark, suppressed fury as he held his hand pinned to my stomach. "Master Edwin told you to rest. You've been standing for two hours, staring at maps, letting your mind race."

"I am an assassin, not a porcelain vase!" I snapped, my eyes flashing open as I glared down at him. "I cannot sit here like a prisoner while my old guild prepares to erase me from existence! If Vane realizes I'm carrying your heir, he won't just try to kill me,he'll harvest my core for blood magic!"

The temperature in the room plunged instantly.

The shadows in the corners of the council chamber seemed to lengthen, twisting violently as Joss’s dark aura flared to life. The air became so thick with his pressure that the flames in the hearth flickered and turned a pale, ghostly blue.

Joss leaned forward until his face was inches from mine, his hand sliding up from my stomach to wrap around my throat, not choking me, but holding me in place with absolute, terrifying ownership.

"Let him try," Joss whispered, his voice vibrating with a brutal, bloodthirsty promise that made my heart hammer wildly against my ribs. "Let Grandmaster Vane send every shadow, every poisoner, every killer in the South. I will tear their limbs from their bodies and stack their bones at the southern border as a warning."

"You can't fight a shadow guild with armies, Joss," I rasped, my throat tight under his hold, though my pulse raced with an electric, intoxicating heat. "They don't field regiments. They use poison in your wine, silver pins in your sleeves, betrayal from the servants you've known for twenty years."

"Then show me where they're hiding," Joss demanded, his thumb rubbing the side of my jaw with dark affection. "You know their safehouses. You know their ciphers. You know their dead-drops."

"And if I give them to you, what do I get?" I challenged, my dark eyes locking onto his golden ones. "Freedom? My life back?"

Joss let out a soft, dark laugh that sent a shiver straight down my spine. He leaned down, brushing his lips against the sensitive spot just beneath my ear, making me gasp.

"You get to stay alive, Gawin," Joss whispered into my skin. "You get to carry my child in safety, fed on the finest silks and strongest tonics in the realm. You get to watch me destroy the men who made you into a weapon."

His hand shifted from my jaw back down to my abdomen, his broad palm pressing warm against the faint, hidden swell beneath my robes.

"You belong to the North now," Joss added, his voice dropping into a possessive growl. "Your blade belongs to my crown. Your body belongs to my bed. And your child belongs to my throne. Accept it."

I ground my teeth, my hands clenching into the velvet cushions beneath me. Every instinct I possessed screamed at me to fight, to draw a hidden blade, to strike at his throat while he was this close. But as his magic continued to seep into my core, soothing the sharp aches and stabilizing the volatile spark inside me, a terrifying realization settled into my heart.

He wasn't just trapping me with physical chains or heavy guards. He was trapping me with my own body. The Aethel-Core was linking us together, thread by thread, magic by magic, until the line between my survival and his protection no longer existed.

"Give me the cipher key for the western courier route," I rasped finally, turning my face away from his lips, though I didn't push his hand off my stomach.

Joss smiled,a slow dangerous curve of his lips that showed he knew he had won this round.

"It's on the second shelf," Joss said softly, standing up to his full height but keeping his hand lingering on my hip for a moment longer. "Read it while you lay there. If you try to stand up before Master Edwin brings your midday meal, I will carry you back to my bed and chain your wrists to the headboard."

"You're a monster," I muttered, pulling the velvet blanket higher around my shoulders as I reached for the scroll he laid beside me.

"I am your monarch, Gawin," Joss corrected smoothly, stepping back toward the map table with a look of supreme satisfaction. "Get used to the title."

I looked down at the coded scroll in my hands, my fingers tracing the familiar symbols of the Southern Shadow Guild. For ten years, those symbols had been my law, my life, my only purpose. Now, as the heavy, protective warmth of Joss’s magic pulsed softly in my lower belly, I knew those symbols were nothing more than targets.

I was going to burn my old life to the ground. Not for Joss Wayer. Not for his crown.

But for the tiny, impossible life growing inside me and the terrifying man who stood guard over us both.

  • BOUND TO THE SHADOW    The Council of Wolves

Chapter 6: The Council of WolvesThe High Chamber of the Northern Citadel smelled of beeswax, wet slate, and ancient, unyielding stone.I stood three paces behind Joss Wayer’s obsidian throne, shrouded in a high-collared mantle of midnight velvet. Underneath the heavy fabric, a silver-embroidered tunic hugged my chest and waist cut specifically to conceal the subtle, soft shift in my lower abdomen that only I and Master Edwin could truly detect. My body felt heavy, anchored by the dense, blood-fortifying tonic Joss had forced down my throat two hours prior. The sickness had receded into a low, dull thrum at the base of my spine, replaced by an uncomfortable surge of heightened senses. I could hear the faint scuffle of leather boots against marble; I could smell the sharp, metallic tang of iron grease on the guards' broadswords; and most of all, I could feel the suffocating, protective pressure of Joss’s aura wrapping around me like an invisible suit of armor. Before the long, hors

  • BOUND TO THE SHADOW    The Iron Collar

Chapter 4: The Iron CollarJoss's POVControl was not merely a habit to me, it was the bedrock upon which I had built the Northern Citadel.A spymaster measures life in secrets, but a sovereign measures it in leverage. For ten years, I had held every piece on the board with absolute precision. Generals bowed to my silence, rival realms trembled at the mere prospect of my shadow-bound legions, and assassins the best the Southern Guilds could buy had died silently in the dark corridors beneath my feet.Except one.Gawin Caskey sat at the far end of the marble bathing chamber, wrapped in a dark velvet robe that swallowed his lean frame. He looked frail, a sight that infuriated me because I knew it was a lie. Beneath that pale skin and those dark circles under his eyes lay a lethal, wounded predator. Even now, with his core bound and his body fighting the early strains of a royal pregnancy, his hands were steady. He was watching the movement of my jaw, the rhythm of my breath, calcul

  • BOUND TO THE SHADOW    Silk and Steel

Chapter 3: Silk and SteelGawin’s PovMorning did not arrive with sunlight in the Northern Citadel. It came with a dull, grey fog that clung to the high stone towers, filtering through the heavy drapes of Joss’s private suite in pale, ghostlike ribbons.I hadn’t slept.Every time my eyes drifted shut, the sheer absurdity of my situation dragged me back to consciousness. I was Gawin Caskey. I had spent ten years training my body to be an instrument of death, to ignore cold, hunger, and physical agony. Yet now, I lay propped up on a mountain of silk pillows, clutching a velvet blanket to my chest while my own body quietly betrayed me.Pregnant.The word felt like a physical weight on my chest, threatening to crush my lungs. A secret, ancient trait awakened by royal blood. By his blood. The heavy oak doors clicked open without a warning.I sat up instantly, reaching out of pure instinct for the dagger I usually kept strapped to my inner thigh. My hand met soft cotton sleepwear ins

  • BOUND TO THE SHADOW    The Gilded Cage

Chapter 2: The Gilded CageGawin's Pov The cold, oppressive dampness of the dungeons faded into the rich scent of cedar, polished mahogany, and burning jasmine.I didn’t open my eyes immediately. I let my senses map out my surroundings first, an old habits-of-a-spymaster trick that had saved my throat more times than I could count. The surface beneath me was suffocatingly plush, draped in heavy silk and down blankets that felt entirely unnatural against my skin. There was no sound of dripping water, no clanking of iron gates, no guards muttering outside a barred door. Just the soft crackle of a hearth somewhere to my left, radiating an intense, golden heat."I know you're awake, Gawin."The voice was low, resonant, and entirely too close.I opened my eyes, wincing at the soft amber light filtering through thick velvet drapes. My vision took a moment to focus before landing on Joss. He had shed his heavy velvet traveling cloak and high-collared armor, clad now in a dark, open-col

  • BOUND TO THE SHADOW    Cold Iron

Chapter 1: Cold IronGawin's Pov Cold iron had a distinct taste. It tasted like blood, rust, and defeat.I sat on the damp stone floor of the high-security cell, my arms pulled back by heavy anti-magic chains that weighed down my wrists like boulders. Every breath burned. My ribs were cracked, courtesy of Joss’s elite guard during my capture and my head pounded with a dull, persistent ache that hadn't let up in three days.I was Gawin Caskey. The Spymaster. The Shadow Blade. A man who could move through a guarded fortress without making a sound.Yet here I was, rotting in the deepest dungeon of the Northern Citadel. The massive iron door groaned on its hinges. Torchlight flickered into the gloom casting a tall, imposing silhouette against the wall.Joss Way-er walked in.He moved with the effortless grace of an apex predator. Broad shoulders, dark velvet cloak, and eyes like molten gold, hard, calculating, and completely devoid of mercy. He stopped a few feet from where I sat,
