Ryan's POV

That night, the house was quiet in a way that felt wrong. I noticed it the second I stepped off the last stair and my footsteps echoed back at me from the marble instead of being swallowed up by the usual clatter of pots and the low hum of the radio that the cook liked to keep playing in the kitchen while she cooked.

There was no smell of garlic or roasting meat drifting out to meet me the way there always was by this hour, no warm light spilling from under the kitchen door, nothin

Mile's POV I hadn’t meant to end up there either, not really, not in any way I could have explained if someone had asked me an hour earlier what I thought I was doing wandering into a place like that on the far side of the city,My heart was still hurt raw from the humiliation of the day before, aching for something, anything, that might make me feel like more than the joke an entire school had turned me into overnight. I’d taken a mask from the same server who’d handed one to the stranger already waiting somewhere down that dim hallway, some reckless, wounded part of me deciding that if I was going to be humiliated anyway, I might as well be the one choosing what happened to me for once, instead of having it happen to me in front of a room full of laughing strangers. The room I was led to was small, lit by a single low lamp that left most of the space in shadow, and there was already someone waiting there. A mask was covering the upper half of his face, and the second the door shu

Mile's POV I found the video of myself around noon, unable to stay away from my phone any longer despite every instinct telling me not to look, and seeing it with my own eyes was somehow worse than just hearing about it secondhand from the ringing silence of my own humiliation the night before. There I was, frozen mid-flinch as the crowd around me erupted into laughter, Ryan’s voice cutting clean and cruel over the noise, and underneath the video, the comments had already piled up into the hundreds, most of them mocking, a few tagging people I didn’t even know, turning my worst moment into something for strangers to pick apart and laugh at from a safe distance. I forced myself to read maybe a dozen comments before the sick feeling in my stomach got bad enough that I had to set the phone face down on my nightstand and press both hands over my eyes instead. My phone kept buzzing throughout the day, an endless string of calls I refused to answer, King’s name flashing across the screen

  • BROKEN BY MY STEPBROTHER   Chapter 21

Ryan's POV "Ughhh, what the hell" I groaned out.My head felt like it had been split open with a sledgehammer as I pushed my eye lids open.It took me a full disoriented minute to even realize that I wasn’t in my own bed, blinking up at an unfamiliar ceiling before the shapes around me resolved into Derek’s living room. There were red cups still scattered across every surface, someone’s forgotten hoodie draped over the arm of the couch I was apparently sprawled across. My mouth tasted like something had crawled into it and died overnight, and the sunlight cutting through the blinds felt like it was trying personally to punish me for every drink I’d had the night before, which, judging by how badly my skull was throbbing, had clearly been a lot more than I remembered.I dragged myself upright slowly, pressing the heel of my hand against my eye socket, trying to piece together fragments of the night before, but everything past a certain point was just a blur of noise and lights and the

Mile's POV Saturday night came sooner than expected and it made me more excited than I thought I would be. Just as promised, King drove over with Giselle to pick me up and we went to the party together. The party was loud in a way that hit me the second we walked through Derek’s front door, bass thumping through the floor, half the junior and senior class packed into a house that suddenly felt much smaller than it probably was. Cups were scattered across every surface and the smell of spilled beer already thick in the air. King had disappeared almost immediately, swallowed up by a group of his basketball friends, and Giselle stuck close to my side for the first twenty minutes or so, pointing out people and shouting commentary over the music, until she got pulled onto the makeshift dance floor in the living room by a few girls from her art class and I lost track of her in the crowd shortly after.I found King again eventually, or rather spotted him, tucked into a corner of the kitche

  • BROKEN BY MY STEPBROTHER   Chapter 19

Mile's POV I hadn’t intended to go out to the pool that evening, I’d just been restless after dinner, my mind still circling around what had happened at my locker earlier that day, and the fresh air seemed like a better option than lying in bed replaying it for the tenth time. The backyard was quiet except for the soft ripple of water, string lights casting a warm glow over the patio, and it wasn’t until I stepped further out onto the deck that I realized I wasn’t alone out there.Ryan was already in the water, midway through a lap, and he surfaced near the edge just as I came into view, pushing wet hair back from his forehead with one hand. I stopped where I was for a second longer than I meant to, taking him in without really meaning to, the water sliding off his shoulders, the easy, unselfconscious way he moved like he belonged wherever he was standing. There was something undeniably striking about him in that moment, lit up gold under the patio lights, and I felt a strange, un

Mile's POV Things really did seem to be getting better and I’d started to let my guard down just enough to actually enjoy walking through the halls without bracing for whatever cruelty might be waiting around the next corner. That sense of ease was still fragile, though, and it didn’t take long for something to come along and test it.I was at my locker between third and fourth period, digging through my bag for a textbook I’d forgotten to grab that morning, when I heard the unmistakable click of heels approaching and looked up to find Kourtney standing there with two of her friends flanking her, arms crossed, wearing the kind of smile that never meant anything good.“Well, look who’s back from the dead,” she said, tilting her head at me with exaggerated sweetness. “Guess getting your face rearranged wasn’t enough to keep you home, huh?”I didn’t answer right away, turning back to my locker, hoping if I ignored her she’d get bored and move on the way she sometimes did, but her friend

Miles POVMy blood turned cold. For a second, I genuinely thought I was imagining things. Maybe I was tired from the drive. Maybe my brain was playing some kind of cruel joke on me.Because there was absolutely no way the person standing in the doorway could be Ryan Blackwood s.There was no way, o

Miles POVLater that week, I sat in the passenger seat with my backpack resting between my feet while my mother drove, occasionally humming along to whatever song was playing on the radio, and every time I glanced at her, I saw the same smile that had been on her face all week, the smile of someone

Miles POV"Alright, you can leave, Miles" The teacher said and I gave him a grateful smile before rushing out of the class. I let out a sigh, the hallway was pretty much empty as usual."Finally" I whispered to myself, heading to the bathroom. It took a lot of courage to be able to asked permission

  • BROKEN BY MY STEPBROTHER   Chapter 4

Miles POVThe rest of the evening was torture. After unpacking a few boxes and putting some of my clothes away, I stayed in my room for nearly an hour trying to calm down, but every time I started feeling slightly better, I remembered Ryan’s face when he had grabbed my collar and threatened me, and
