MasukEveryone thinks I killed my sister. When Elizabeth was found dead, the police found my throw knife buried in her chest. Her husband found my earring at the scene. And her killer found me, the jealous younger sister who never had her perfect life, as the perfect cover. I was about to go to prison for a murder I didn't commit. So I did what any desperate twenty-year-old would do. I begged her for help. And woke up the next morning in her body. In her house and in her marriage to Marshall, the same man who stood in court and swore I was the killer. I thought I would have a chance to clear my name before returning to my body, but nothing prepared me for the fact that I would cook, clean, and sleep next to the man who wanted to see me rot in jail. How could I have imagined that my sister lent me her body so I can finish something she started? How much more when it drives my ex, the only man who would recognise me in any skin, back into my life?
Lihat lebih banyakI spent an entire month replaying the nightmare of my sister saying her wedding vows to the father of my unborn child.
Elizabeth was born first, me second, and Diana third. We are triplets, and besides the contours of our face, we are identical. I didn't imagine a day would come when Elizabeth would use that to her advantage by stealing the stranger who took my virginity when he came looking for me.
I was glad I had stopped vomiting before our birthday, but I wasn't expecting Marshall, Elizabeth's husband, to open my bedroom door on the morning of our birthday without knocking.
His black shirt was half-tucked, and his hair was still wet from a shower he must have taken in a hurry. The bags under his eyes hinted that he hadn't slept at all.
He didn't say happy birthday. He announced my sister's death.
“Lizzie?” I asked in disbelief.
"The murder weapon is a throw knife," he said in a monotone. Quietly. That was worse than shouting.
My eyes wandered to the shelf behind him. Inside it, taped to the back cover, was the result of the pregnancy test I had weeks before. It was positive. And under my mattress was my throw knife. Everyone knows I can hit bullseye with a knife even from several meters away.
If he searched my room, he would find both the knife and the test results. That's bad news. Especially now.
“Are you accusing me of murder?”
“You are the last person she saw,” he spoke calmly, his voice threateningly low in a way that made my skin crawl.
“And that makes me a killer? Are you even listening to yourself?!This is my sister we are talking about.” I managed to get the words out without stammering.
His eyes narrowed but he didn't respond. He just stared at me.
“I only met her to talk. We share a birthday which is today. Is that not enough reason to meet her?”
“I suggest you get properly dressed,” he said and stepped outside. Two officers came in afterwards. They cuffed me in my own bedroom while my Mom stood in the hallway and watched.
At the station, I met a photo face-down on the table in front of me. The detective who came in with me flipped it.
It was Elizabeth.
Five parallel lines cut across her face. Straight and deliberate. It started and ended the same way.
And in the center of her chest, buried to the hilt was a blade with a purple handle. It was chipped on the end where I dropped it at the range last winter.
My throw knife. The same knife I'm very sure I left at home.
I should have told them it was mine.
I didn't. Because if I said it was mine, they would ask where I went to after my brief meeting with Elizabeth in her office.
I had gone straight to the parking lot outside Marshall's mansion at 2 a.m, sitting in a taxi and trying to decide if I should go inside and tell Marshall about the pregnancy.
So I said nothing. Instead, my hand traveled to my belly under the table.
The detective put down a second photo. It was still her, but a different shot.
The five fingers on her left hand were cut off and her hand was placed on her chest. Her sky-blue blouse was soaked red, the heavy patch going down to her belly. But I didn't see the fingers anywhere. And her pleated skirt wasn't touched.
Everything looked like a ritual. But…
"She wasn't… assaulted.” My voice cracked.
"Correct," the detective said. "So we are not looking at the work of a man. Maybe a woman. Maybe someone jealous."
He said it like he was giving me a script that was about my story.
“If this is about my fight with her, siblings fight all the time…”
“Do they also kill when they can't have their way?”Marshall snapped at me. He had just led my Mom and Diana inside. His hands nestled on the slopes of Diana's shoulders like they were acquainted in a way that made my stomach knot. He didn't stay. He left the next minute like he couldn't stand my presence.
Mom settled down in front of me. Her eyes were red and swollen. But no sign of tears.
“Charlotte.” Her voice caught on my name like she had concluded that I did it. “ Lizzie's wedding ring is missing,” she said, and pushed a third photo from the crime scene to me. It was a close-up shot of Elizabeth's empty fingers.
"Lizzie's wedding ring is missing. It would be nice to have it back for the funeral."
Diana cut in at once. "Mom, stop being nice to her."
"Diana, please —"
"No. Can't you see what she did?" Diana said and turned to me. She pulled a laptop from her tote bag. It had a sticker that said Luna. It was Elizabeth's.
"It was by your bedside, Charlotte. By your bedside."
She opened it, typed, and turned it to me.
Elizabeth never lets anyone touch her laptop. How did she know our sister's password?
“Marshall.” I called out solemnly after failing to shush Gabriel. “I didn’t notice you coming.”“Obviously!” He intoned, then rasped Gabriel’s name.“Mr. Washington, I have gotten the address. Thanks for stopping by.”My throat tightened. I heard Gabriel swallow loudly, and when my eyes darted to his face, a narrow stream of sweat was streaking down the side of his ear.“Get in,” Marshall ordered, and went round to the driver’s seat. The rumble of the engine shook through my bones before it made me scramble into the car.He drove past green groves, fast enough that the trees blurred into a single green wall. His fingers were clenched white around the steering wheel while driving. The hum of other vehicles faded behind us, and just then, he slammed the brakes. The tyres screeched. The Maybach fishtailed, the back end swinging before the brakes caught and the car shuddered to a stop. My seatbelt cut into my chest and my stomach dropped as if the road had disappeared beneath us.I tried
Something dropped inside me.For the first few minutes, I laughed. It sounded dry and humorless even to me. My fists tightened. My mind went blank, like ink slowly vanishing from a page."She died this morning?" I asked, my lips parted. "Do you even hear yourself?"I wanted to nod and leave, but the thrumming in my ears wouldn't let me.My body was my only way home. I couldn't accept that it would just die. That would mean I was locked in this body forever. Stuck here with no chance of becoming me again. Which body would I return to?That couldn't happen."I went upstairs when I heard the dog barking. There was nothing I could do. I took her to the morgue," Mom explained and it landed on me like the weight of the whole world."I'm in a morgue? She died this morning and you already took her to the morgue? Not even a hospital?"The more I tried to breathe, the more my lungs burned. My ribs felt wrapped in barbed wire. My hands flew to my head on their own, and I tried to inhale again wi
When I first went over the incidents surrounding Elizabeth's death, even during the court hearing, I thought Diana was responsible. Every clue I had pointed to her. She had tried to end my life once. She could have done the same to Elizabeth. Then I thought about Marshall's involvement as well, alongside her. But she would be stupid to get her hands dirty if Lizzie's fortune already said she would die.And Diana was anything but stupid."It can't be her," I thought. “Could it be Marshall?”I shook my head, as if that could dislodge the idea. The faster I found my answers, the better. Staying in this body playing the role of Marshall's wife. I couldn't accept that. Not after he accused me of my sister's death and promised to make sure I rotted in jail. When Marshall came downstairs, I watched Diana follow him to the car, expecting her to sit next to him. Instead, she went to the back. I got in next to her and turned towards the window. A moment later, I realized we hadn't moved. When
I took a step and a thread of memory untangled in my head. It played like a scene in front of me, like the rest of the memories I have been getting since I woke up in her body, but I knew it wasn't mine. This was Elizabeth's.Marshall hugging Diana from behind. Diana stealing kisses from him. And one of them making out on the same cushion where they're seated. My chest burned."Diana wouldn't do this," I told myself. "She wouldn't spit in our sister's face this way."I forced myself to keep walking and said hello, like I was back in a classroom about to ask an obvious question. My heartbeat thrummed, unable to keep still. My nails dug into my palms, and every breath I took felt like a burn in my throat. They turned. But they didn't look guilty or surprised. They looked annoyed, like I was meddling in their business. That was when it struck me. Lizzie had been a placeholder in her own marriage. That realization took a toll on me. The wedding she had wanted so badly had been a lie. A
