The night grew deeper, the house quiet except for the soft hum of the city. Alina paused in the hallway, her thoughts heavy. Going back to Atheria had stirred things again, the press, Adam, Sebastian, the Vaughn's, everything tightening around her like a storm waiting to break.

Downstairs, Sam and Regina sat in the kitchen. Soft mugs clinked, their quiet laughter drifting up the stairs. Alina smiled to herself. They were her steady place, even if they didn’t know it. And she could see how they felt about each other, both too shy to admit it. Maybe they were closer than they let on. She shook her head, amused, and stepped into the room.

“Plotting something without me?” she teased.

Alina chuckled and sat down. “I won’t be surprised when you two finally stop hiding how you feel.”

They froze, then looked away. Sam scratched the back of his head, glancing at Regina. “We… weren’t expecting you to notice,” he admitted, a little embarrassed.

Regina gave a small, sheepish smile and looked down at her mug.

Alina let it go, smiling quietly. For a moment, home felt warm and safe exactly what she needed before stepping back into the outside world.

The next morning, sunlight slipped through the kitchen windows. The smell of toast and eggs filled the house, Agnes was already cooking.

Alina stepped into Nathaniel’s room. “Good morning, Nate.”

He was already up, brushing his hair neatly. “Morning, Mom. Breakfast ready?”

“Almost. Go wash up first.”

Nathaniel nodded and went to the bathroom, washing his face and brushing his teeth with care unusual for a five-year-old. Alina watched from the doorway, pride warming her chest. Even at his age, he understood more than most kids, and he needed very little reminding.

When he came back, clean and tidy, she helped smooth his uniform. “All set.”

"Thanks, Mom," Nathaniel said, tying his shoes. Just as he finished, a soft whimper drifted from Charlotte's room.

Alina hurried over and opened the door. Charlotte lay curled tightly under her blanket, cheeks pale.

“Charlotte, sweetie, time to wake up,” Alina said gently, touching her shoulder.

Charlotte groaned. “Mom… five more minutes. I feel so tired…” Her voice was faint.

Alina frowned. She pulled the blanket down and pressed her hand to Charlotte's forehead. It was warm. Too warm.

“You’ve got a fever,” Alina murmured, worry in her voice. “Tell me, does anything hurt?”

"My head... my body... I just feel so tired," Charlotte mumbled, shivering slightly under the covers.

Alina nodded and moved with quiet efficiency. She took out the thermometer and placed it under Charlotte's arm. After a moment, she read the temperature. "38°C," she said softly.

Nathaniel appeared in the doorway, eyes slightly narrowed. "Is Charlotte okay?" he asked, his tone both measured and worried.

“She has a fever,” Alina said calmly. “We’ll make her comfortable. Can you get her some water and one more blanket?”

“Of course,” he said, moving to her side. He brushed Charlotte’s hair gently. “Hang in there, Char. Mom’s taking care of you.”

“I just want to sleep…” Charlotte mumbled.

“Rest, sweetheart,” Alina said, brushing her hair back. “We’ll make you feel better.”

Charlotte leaned against her mother, eyes half-closed. “Mom, I don’t want to be sick.”

“I know, baby,” Alina said softly. “But we’ll make you better soon. Just rest, drink, and let your body fight the fever.”

Nathaniel’s small hand stayed on his sister’s hair. “I want to stay with her,” he said softly, hesitant.

Alina put a hand on his shoulder. “I know, sweetheart. But I can take care of Charlotte. You need to have breakfast and get ready for school. Grandpa Wilfred will take you.”

Nathaniel hesitated, glancing at Charlotte's pale face. But he knew his mother was a skilled doctor. "Okay," he said finally. "Charlotte, be good, eat when Mom tells you, and take your medicine, alright?"

Charlotte mumbled weakly, "I'll try..."

Alina watched him leave, feeling both proud and concern, then went back to cooling Charlotte’s forehead and giving her water. "Rest now, sweetheart. I'll make sure you're comfortable and get you feeling better soon."

Once Charlotte fell asleep again, Alina called Regina.

"Hey… just wanted to let you know I won’t be coming by the hospital today," Alina said softly. "Charlotte’s a little unwell, so I’ll be staying with her."

Regina’s voice came through, calm and kind. "Of course, Alina. Don’t worry about work. Focus on her. How’s she doing?"

“She’s asleep now, thankfully. Fever’s still mild, but I want to keep her comfortable and watch over her. I’ll manage my work from here.”

Regina’s tone turned curious. "She seemed fine yesterday, lively and bubbly. How come she’s sick now?"

Alina sighed softly. "I’m not sure, but I’ll keep a close eye on her. Just want to make sure she’s okay."

"Good," Regina said gently. "I’ll handle things on my end. Don’t stress, just watch over her."

"I will," Alina replied with a small smile, feeling a quiet relief. She hung up and returned to her laptop, typing and checking files while glancing at Charlotte from time to time.

Agnes, noticing Charlotte was unwell, quietly stepped into the room. "I’ll stay with her for a bit. You should eat something first."

Alina smiled. "Okay, Agnes. I’ll just grab a little breakfast."

"You can’t work on an empty stomach," Agnes said with a nod.

While Alina made coffee and toasted some bread in the kitchen, Nathaniel got ready to leave. Grandpa Wilfred helped him gather his school things.

Alina called softly as he waved goodbye, "Be good, Nathaniel. Have a good day. Grandpa Wilfred will bring you back safely."

Nathaniel paused, glancing toward Charlotte’s room. "I will, Mom. Take care of Charlotte for me."

"I will," Alina said warmly. "Now go on, you don’t want to be late."

Once Nathaniel left, Alina carried her coffee and toast back upstairs, sipping and nibbling while keeping a careful eye on Charlotte under her blanket. Every few moments, she checked her daughter’s breathing, a quiet worry tugging at her chest. Watching her rest, Alina’s heart tightened, sensing the day ahead might hold more than just fevers and breakfast.

Alina arrived at the Sterling rooftop restaurant just before eight, her heels clicking softly on the marble. In simple trousers and a white blouse, she moved with quiet elegance. The dim lobby glowed with golden light. Her chest tightened, heart racing, but she stayed composed. Each step felt like crossing from the past she’d left behind into the urgent present.John was already there, near the elevators, phone in hand. He looked up as she approached, expression calm but attentive."Dr. Hart," he said smoothly. "Right on time."Alina offered a brief smile, gripping her purse strap. "John.""Follow me. Mr. Vaughn is waiting," he said, nodding toward the private elevators. The VIP room was secluded, dimly lit, the long table stretching toward the floor-to-ceiling window. Below, the city lights of Atheria sparkled, unaware of the tension inside. The air felt heavy, filled with expectation.Sebastian stood by the window, the whiskey untouched. He didn’t turn at once, but his posture shift

  • Back in His Arms, Back in His Game... a Billionaire's Price   The Call That Changes Everything

Three days had passed in a blur. Alina barely remembered the last time she had slept properly. The hospital had become her world: monitors, databases, endless calls. Every lead for a donor ended in disappointment.Back in Dr. Philip Evert’s office, the three of them huddled over a cluttered desk. Alina stared at the stacks of papers, her mind spinning. Adam stood nearby, phone in hand, updating contacts and checking donors. Philip leaned against the desk, scanning reports.“We’ve checked every hospital, private bank, even overseas,” Dr. Philip said quietly. “Nothing usable yet. Finding a match will take time, there’s nothing available right away.”Alina shook her head. “There has to be someone we haven’t thought of. Charlotte’s condition is worsening… and time is running out.”Adam’s voice was calm but firm. “We’ve done everything we can. The donor has to be a perfect match. Her blood type is rare, and every day matters.”Dr. Philip rubbed his forehead. “Even if we find someone, arran

The word 'truth' pressed against Lena's chest, sharp and heavy. After years in the shadows, unseen and unheard, she was suddenly at the center of something far bigger than herself.“Dr. Moreau,” a calm voice said. “John Lowell. Mr. Vaughn’s assistant. We need to speak, privately.”Her brows knitted. “Mr. Vaughn? Sebastian Vaughn?”“Yes. He asked me to contact you.”Lena leaned back, cautious. “Why me?”A brief pause. “He’s looking for answers… about Dr. Hart.”The name struck like a spark. Alina. Again. Of course. Her pulse quickened, though she kept her tone steady. "I don't know what you mean.""You've worked alongside Dr. Hart before," John said smoothly. "Mr. Vaughn believes you might know things others don’t. He values discretion."Years of being overlooked, this was her chance. “When?” she asked.“Tonight. A café near the hospital. Quiet after hours.”She hesitated only a moment. "I'll be there."An hour later, she entered a small café on a side street. Dim yellow lamps lit the

Sebastian stood by the tall glass window of his office, staring down at the lights of Atheria. The city glowed, cars moving, towers shining but he barely saw any of it. He looked calm on the outside, but inside he was a mess.Behind him, John waited with his tablet. The soft tick of the office clock filled the room. He didn’t speak, letting the silence stretch. At last, Sebastian turned, eyes sharp. “Say it again.”John straightened. “The hospital sent a private request. They need a very rare blood type, O-negative, Kell-negative, Duffy-negative. The patient is a child. Five-year-old girl. They found a partial match, but the donor can’t give.”The words hung heavy. Sebastian’s jaw tightened.“Did they name the family?”John shook his head. “No, sir. But the request came from Atheria Medical. That means someone important. They don’t send this out unless every option has failed.”Sebastian looked back at the window, thoughts turning. Five years old. Urgent enough for Dr. Philip Evert’s

The car stopped in front of Atheria Medical. Alina stepped out fast, holding her bag tight. The hospital lights cut through the night, bright and sharp. Adam walked beside her, matching her pace as they rushed inside.Inside, staff were already waiting. A nurse handed Adam a folder, another gave quick updates. They moved with purpose, the Evert name opened doors everywhere."Dad is waiting in his office," Adam said, leading her down the hall.Dr. Philip Evert stood the moment they walked in. He had the steady presence of someone who had led crises for years, but his eyes softened when he saw Alina.“Alina,” he said quietly. “I heard. How is she?”She handed him the latest results. “Stable, but barely. Her blood type is rare. Without a donor, I can’t keep her stable for long.”Philip’s eyes narrowed as he read. He turned to Adam. “Use all our channels. Hospitals, clinics, private banks, every resource. Don’t wait on protocols. Start calling everyone yourself.”Adam nodded. “Already sta

Charlotte lay pale and still on the hospital bed. IV fluids ran steadily, antibiotics dripped from the bag, and her small hand twitched slightly in Alina's. Alina adjusted the blanket and checked the monitors again, her heart racing even as her mind ran through every possibility."Just a little longer, sweetheart," she whispered. "You're safe now. We'll get through this."Every flicker of her eyelids, every small shiver kept Alina alert. Her dual role was clear: mother and doctor. Each vital sign was a clue; every number on the monitor a warning. She assessed the rising fever, the weakness, the red spots, and considered potential complications.Nathaniel stood close, eyes wide as he watched everything.“Mom… why isn’t her blood working?” he asked softly.Alina knelt beside him, brushing a strand of hair from his forehead. "Her body is having trouble making healthy blood. Some cells are too low, some too high. That’s why she’s so weak and sick."He frowned. "So… we need to help her rig
