SOFIA

I'd barely eaten all morning.

The sun was already climbing in the sky, and the apartment was still soaked in that mid-morning quiet that always made everything feel more fragile than it actually was. I sat in front of my computer, my elbow propped against the desk, with my cheek resting against my palm as my other hand moved over the trackpad. And I was so fucking exhausted, but I had to keep going.

I'd been staring at the same set of search results for over an hour now, and my mind was feeling numb. I combed through Hector Alonzo’s aliases, his digital footprints, shell corporations, and whatever the hell breadcrumbs I could scrape together. But there was nothing I could use to reach out to him without tipping him off and making myself look incompetent to Adrian. I had to find a way to balance keeping Hector alive, while making sure Adrian knew I’d succeeded, and that I had nothing to do with him slipping through his fingers.

But catching him was like trying to catch an oily

SOFIAThe ride to the DeLuca estate was quiet, but it wasn't peaceful. I was too busy drowning in my own thoughts, replaying every interaction I'd ever had with Melissa DeLuca like a slow-motion car crash I couldn't look away from. The woman absolutely terrified me, and not in the way Adrian did, with his cold rage and his unpredictable sense of justice. Melissa didn't need a gun or a threat to send someone running. She just had to look at you, and her silence said more than most people's shouting ever could. And now she wanted to talk to me."What does she want?" I asked for the third time, staring out the window even though there wasn't much to see. Just rows of trees and the occasional stone wall fencing off land that probably belonged to some other old-money criminal family."She wants to see us," Adrian said casually, like this wasn't a full-on summons from a woman who could make or break a person with a single word. "She heard about the appointment .""Oh," I muttered, as my t

SOFIAI hadn't stopped clenching and unclenching my fists since we left the house. My palms were sticky with sweat, and I didn't know if it was because I was about to meet three men who'd spent the last few years running with Enzo Maresca, or because for the first time in my life, I wasn't just playing pretend in this world. I wasn't hiding behind a pretty face and a sharp tongue anymore. I was deep in it now, and that thought alone was terrifying. Adrian drove us himself, which was nice. He didn't say much during the ride, but I noticed the way his hand never left my thigh, with his thumb slowly brushing back and forth like he was trying to make me relax. “You’ll be fine,” he said. “This will be over before you even know it.”“I hope so,” I replied nervously. “What if they hate me?”“Then I’ll rip out their tongues and make them swallow it,” he said, and I smiled nervously as we finally pulled up at the apartment in Brooklyn. The building was really old, with a few windows boarde

SOFIAI woke up to the sound of slow and steady breathing, and the scent of Adrian's skin all around me. My cheek was pressed against his bare chest, and my leg was tangled around his own under the sheet. For one brief moment, I let myself pretend that nothing else mattered in the world, and that it was just the two of us. But then Adrian stirred, and the spell was broken. His hand slid up my back in lazy strokes, and when I tilted my head to look up at him, he was already awake and watching me with that soft and unbearably tender expression that made me feel naked in a way no physical undressing ever could."Morning, cupcake," he murmured, his voice scratchy and low from sleep.I couldn't help smiling as I said, "I've been meaning to ask, why do you keep calling me that.""Because that's what you are," he said, brushing a knuckle along my jaw. "The best kind of treat, and I love coming to you when I need some sugar."We stayed like that for a little while, just holding onto each oth

SOFIAI didn't say a word all the way back to my apartment. The city kept moving outside the window, oblivious to the fact that my whole fucking life had just changed. People crossed streets, taxis honked, and lovers kissed on sidewalks. Somewhere out there, someone was probably laughing, lighting a cigarette or scrolling through TikTok, while I sat motionless in the backseat of an SUV, my heartbeat still caught somewhere between adrenaline and disbelief.By the time I unlocked the front door and stepped inside, the silence was pressing down on my shoulders. I dropped my bag on the floor and kicked off my heels, then I walked straight to the couch without even turning on the light. I just sat there, staring at nothing and thinking about the last few hours. I could still feel the cold weight of the revolver in my palm. I could still taste the adrenaline of that final click, and still see Adrian's face in the dark looking so calm and so certain as he raised the pistol and fired into th

SOFIAThe warehouse looked like nothing from the outside. It was just another skeletal building in the city's neglected underbelly, with faded paint peeling off its steel exterior and a heavy iron door bolted shut. If you drove past it, you wouldn't think twice. But tonight, this was where kings and criminals were gathering. My heels echoed on the concrete as I walked toward the entrance, my breath coming out in short bursts. I wasn't scared, but I wasn't calm either. I just felt jittery and nervous, because I didn’t know what I was about to walk into. And that wasn’t helped by the fact that Rafe was waiting for me at the door, and he frowned as soon as he saw me. Shit!He didn't say anything when he saw me. He gave me that unreadable look he always wore, which was equal parts cold, annoyed, and vaguely dangerous."I didn't expect to see you here," he muttered, holding the door half-open. “I thought you would bail.”"Adrian invited me," I replied, keeping my voice neutral. “We’ll s

SOFIAI didn't even realize I was moving until my chair scraped back."I need to use the bathroom," I muttered, already halfway up, and I didn't wait for Regina's response. I didn't even care if I looked rude or deranged. I could feel Marco's eyes on my back like a sniper and my legs nearly buckled from the pressure.I shoved open the bathroom door the second I reached it, and I stumbled inside like something was chasing me. The stall door banged shut behind me, and my breath just shattered as I crouched and hugged my knees. “Fuck!” I exclaimed, banging my head against the wall. My breath came out in short bursts that weren't enough, and I felt like the air in the room wasn't air anymore. I felt like my lungs had forgotten how to hold oxygen and were just seizing in protest as I pressed my back against the cool tile wall and let my head fall forward.Marco Giordano was right here, less than five feet away. And for the life of me, I couldn’t regain my sanity. I squeezed my eyes shut
