Nikolai’s POV

The hospital halls stretched endlessly as Gregory pushed my wheelchair through corridors that smelled like cleaning solution and sickness. My discharge papers rustled in my jacket pocket, signed so fast the ink was probably still wet. The elevator lurched upward, each floor feeling like another step toward disaster.

St. Mary’s wasn’t like the private hospital where they’d been treating me. Here, everything looked tired. Scuffed floors, buzzing lights that made everyone’s skin look yellow. The kind of place where people came when they had no other choice.

Gregory’s phone guided us to a service elevator that supposedly reached the roof. Hospital workers moved past us without a second glance, too caught up in their own emergencies to care why a guy in a wheelchair was heading somewhere he probably shouldn’t be.

The rooftop door stood there like a wall between me and whatever hell Adrian had walked into. Wind whistled underneath it, carrying city sounds from fifteen stories

Nikolai’s POVGabriel’s words dropped into the medical room like poison. Francisco’s body. Discovered. Twenty minutes ago. Gregory’s work had either crumbled or someone had been watching us from the start.Dr. Martinez stopped working on Adrian’s wound, her needle hovering midair. She knew when to pay attention and when to forget what she’d heard.“How?”Gabriel shut the door with quiet finality. “Anonymous call about gunshots at the hospital. Police found him with his own gun, staged exactly like Gregory planned.”“So what’s wrong?”“Leonardo got a call five minutes after the cops showed up. Someone made sure the Moretti family heard about their dead son before any official word came down.”Adrian winced as Dr. Martinez resumed stitching. The numbness from the injection couldn’t touch what was building in his mind.“They know.” Adrian’s voice barely carried across the room.“They guess,” Gabriel said. “Guessing isn’t proving.”Dr. Martinez pulled another stitch tight. Her movements s

Adrian’s POVThe wheelchair ride down from the rooftop felt like descending through layers of hell. Each floor we passed took us further from what I’d done, but closer to facing the consequences. My foot throbbed with every heartbeat, the pain sharp and insistent, but it was nothing compared to the hollow ache spreading through my chest.Diego waited by the black sedan in the hospital’s back lot, engine running. His eyes swept over my blood-stained clothes without comment, but I caught the slight tightening around his mouth. In our world, coming back covered in someone else’s blood usually meant either victory or trouble. Sometimes both.Gregory helped me into the backseat while Nikolai transferred from his wheelchair to the passenger side. The leather felt cold against my skin, and I realized my hands were still shaking slightly. Not from fear or shock, but from something else entirely. Adrenaline maybe, or the strange emptiness that comes after crossing a line you can never uncross

Adrian’s POVThe text message glowed on my phone screen as I walked through the hospital parking garage.“We need to talk. Come alone. - A friend.”I should have ignored it. Should have driven straight back to the estate where Gabriel was waiting. Should have listened to the warning bells screaming in my head.Instead, I slipped the phone into my jacket pocket and headed toward my car. The concrete walls of the garage amplified every footstep, every distant car door, turning ordinary sounds into something ominous. The fluorescent lights flickered overhead, casting uneven shadows that seemed to move with a life of their own.My keys felt cold against my palm as I unlocked the BMW. The leather seat creaked as I settled behind the wheel, muscle memory guiding me through the motions of starting the engine. The radio crackled to life with some mindless pop song that felt obscene against the weight of everything that had happened.I was three blocks from the hospital when my phone buzzed ag

Nikolai’s POVBack in my hospital room, I stared at the ceiling tiles and tried to ignore the persistent ache in my side. The pain medication was wearing off, but I’d refused the nurse’s offer of another dose. I needed my mind clear for what was coming next.Gregory stood by the window, occasionally glancing at his phone for updates from our security teams. The afternoon light streaming through the blinds cast long shadows across the sterile room.“Adrian seemed troubled when he left,” Gregory observed.“He has reason to be.” I shifted carefully in the bed. “Francisco’s planning went deeper than we initially thought.”My phone rang. Gabriel’s name appeared on the screen, which meant whatever was happening couldn’t wait for my discharge tomorrow.“Nikolai, we have a situation,” Gabriel said without preamble. “Leonardo’s demanding an emergency meeting. He’s claiming Francisco acted without family authorization and wants to discuss terms.”I sat up straighter, ignoring the sharp protest

Adrian’s POVNikolai’s words echoed in my head as I watched him disappear down the hospital corridor with Gregory. “We aren’t together anymore.” The finality in his voice cut deeper than I wanted to admit.I stood there for a moment, the fluorescent lights buzzing overhead, trying to process what had just happened. Jealousy. I’d accused him of being jealous, and part of me had hoped he’d admit it. Instead, he’d reminded me that whatever we’d had was over.My phone buzzed. A text from Isabelle: “How are you feeling? Coming home today?”Home. The word felt strange. Was the Mancini estate really home, or was it just another prison with better furnishings?I walked back toward Jin’s room, my mind churning. Nikolai had raised a valid question that I’d been too caught up in sympathy to ask: Why had Francisco specifically chosen Jin? Out of all the lawyers in the city, what made Jin Russell the perfect target for kidnapping?Jin was sitting up in bed when I knocked on his door frame. He loo
