Chapter 12: Hope

I had listened to every word.

And then I had told them that I would take a mate when the moon decided and not before. But they did not loved that answer.

*The moon may not decide on your schedule Alpha,* the eldest council member had said at the last meeting, with the particular tone of an old wolf who had run out of patience. *You are twenty six years old. There are packs that will interpret your unmated status as an invitation to challenge

*Let them,* I had said.

And that had been the end of that meeting.

Storm had approved.

Storm always approved of directness.

But there had been nights quiet ones, when the pack was settled and the work was done and I was alone in my office with nothing to occupy my mind  when I had wondered if I was being stubborn about something that simply wasn't coming. If the patient waiting thing inside me was hope or just pride refusing to compromise.

I had not had an answer.

Until last night.

Until a girl with silver eyes and scraped hands had looked up at me in the red moonlight of the Ashwood forest and something in Storm had slammed forward with a recognition so complete and so sudden that I had nearly lost my footing

I was very good at not losing my footing.

But Lyra Ashveil had come close.

Closer than anything had in twenty six years of being very careful about where I put my feet.

*You felt it,* Storm said quietly. *Last night. When she took the cloth from your hand. When she said thank you and meant it. When she looked at you like you were a person and not an Alpha.*You felt it Kael.*

*I felt something,* I said carefully.

*Stop being careful with me,* Storm said. *I am part of you. I know what you felt.*

I pressed two fingers to the bridge of my nose.

*I don't know what she is to me yet,* I said honestly. *I know what Storm feels about Selene. I know that I am drawn to her in a way I cannot explain and have not felt before. I know that I went back last night when I should have slept * . *But I am not going to name something I am not certain of. Not to you. Not to myself. Not to her.*

Storm was quiet for a moment.

*That is fair,* he said finally.

*Thank you.*

*It is also the most you have admitted to anyone about a woman in twenty six years so I am choosing to consider it progress.*

Elias arrived at my office exactly one hour after I told him to.

He came in without knocking  he never knocked, we had stopped pretending that was a reasonable expectation about four years ago and dropped into the chair across from my desk with the ease of someone completely comfortable in his Alpha's space.

He looked at me.

I looked at my desk.

"Ironveil," he said. Not a question.

"How did you know?"

"You rode east at midnight and came back looking like someone handed you a problem you don't know how to solve." He leaned back in the chair. "The only thing in the eastern direction is the Ironveil Pack border and the Ashwood. You are not the type to go walking in the Ashwood for pleasure. So. "What happened?"

I looked at the desk for another moment.

Then I looked up.

"The Blood Moon Ceremony was last night," I said.

Elias nodded slowly. "I'm aware."

"Their Alpha rejected his fated mate. Publicly."

Something moved in Elias's expression. "T

"There is more," I said. "The woman he rejected. She is carrying the Moon Witch bloodline."

Elias went very still.

The easy posture in the chair did not change. But his eyes did. Sharp and focused and suddenly very alert.

"The seal broke?" he said quietly.

"Yes."

"During the rejection."

"Yes."

He was quiet for a long moment. Processing. Elias processed things the way good Betas processed things  quickly and thoroughly and without wasting words on the processing itself.

"And you know this how?" he said carefully.

I met his eyes.

"Because Storm spoke to her wolf," I said. "Across pack lines."

The silence that followed was very long.

Elias sat forward slowly.

"Kael," he said.

"I know."

"Storm has never

"I know Elias."

"In twenty six years he has never

"I am aware of what Storm has and has never done," I said. "I was there for all of it."

Elias looked at me. Long and steady and with the particular quality of attention that made him the best Beta in the northern and eastern territories and also occasionally the most aggravating person in my life.

"Is she your mate?" he said.

I looked at my desk again.

The question sat in the air between us.

Is she your mate.

I thought about silver eyes and scraped hands and a voice that said why are you being kind to me like kindness was something she had stopped expecting from the world.

I thought about Storm pressing toward Selene like a compass finding north.

I thought about standing at her cottage border in the dark and looking at her window and knowing  with a certainty that had nothing to do with reason or logic or any of the careful systems I ran my life on that I was exactly where I was supposed to be.

I thought about the fact that I had ridden home and showered and changed and sat in my office and had not stopped thinking about her for one single minute.

"I don't know," I said.

It was the most honest answer I had.

Elias looked at me for a long moment.

Then he said something that surprised me.

"The council meeting is tomorrow," he said quietly. "They are going to push the mate question again. Harder this time. The Greyfang Alpha's daughter is visiting next week and they have been very deliberate about scheduling it."

I looked up.

"Cancel it," I said.

"Kael

"Cancel the visit Elias. Tell them whatever you need to tell them." I held his gaze. "I will deal with the council. But I am not entertaining a political match right now." . "I am going to the Ashwood at noon."

Elias stared at me.

"You're going back," he said.

"Yes."

"To see her."

"Yes."

He was quiet for a moment.

Then he did something unexpected.

He smiled.

Small and real and a little bit relieved like he had been waiting for this particular conversation for a long time and was glad it had finally arrived.

"About time," he said quietly.

I looked at him.

"Don't," I said.

"I'm just saying

"Elias."

"Three years of council meetings and political candidates and you sitting in this office staring at walls

"Elias."

"and all it took was one Blood Moon and a woman with silver eyes

"If you finish that sentence," I said, "I will assign you border patrol for a month."

He grinned.

Unrepentant and completely unbothered.

"Noon," he said. "Eastern Ashwood. I'll have your horse ready."

He stood up and walked out of my office and I listened to his footsteps disappear down the corridor.

And then I sat alone in the quiet of my office with the morning light coming through the window and Storm warm and settled inside me for the first time since last night.

*She will be there,* Storm said.

*You don't know that,* I said.

*She said noon,* he said simply. *She will be there.*

I looked out the window at the tree line.

At the distant dark shape of the Ashwood on the horizon.

And for the first time in three years of council meetings and political pressure and quiet stubborn waiting

I felt something loosen in my chest.

Something that had been held very tight for a very long time.

Slowly, carefully, the way careful things open

Beginning to hope.

DAMIEN'S POVI had not slept.I had lain in my bed in the Alpha quarters the largest, finest room in the entire Ironveil Pack, with its high ceilings and its stone fireplace and its view of the whole territory and I had stared at the ceiling while Rex dismantled me from the inside out.*You saw them,* Rex said.He had been saying it since I got back. How long do I have?" I said."We don't know," she said. "Could be weeks. Could be less."I nodded slowly.Selene was very alert inside me.Like a wolf who has just heard a twig snap in a quiet forest and is orienting herself toward it.*Then we don't waste time,* she saidI couldn't sleep.I lay in my bed with my father's letter folded on my chest and the moon shinning bright through my window and my mind running through everything Mira's words, my mother's words, the order, the bloodline, Kael in the moonlight saying things in that are strange Then I sat up Selene had gone rigid.*Someone is outside,* she said.I was at the window before she finished.I pressed myself against the wall and looked through the gap in the curtain carefully. The pack grounds were dark and still.Except there was a figure.Tall and broad standing completely still in the shadow of the trees with his arms crossed and his face turned toward my window with a stillness that was not accidental I knew that still

The walk back from Mira's lodge felt longer than it should have.Like the ground itself had shifted while I was inside and I was now walking across a different world than the one I had left. The same trees. The same stone paths. The same pack grounds I had lived on my entire life. But I was different.I knew that now.I had always been different. I just hadn't known what it meant. The moon above me was silver and full and so bright it cast shadows even through the trees. I kept looking up at her. Kept catching myself staring like she was going to say something. Like after everything Mira had just told me the moon owed me at least a few words of explanation. She stayed silent. She always did.She speaks through actions, Selene said inside me. Not words. She always has.I pulled my shawl tighter and kept walking.I was almost at my mother's cottage when I stopped dead. The light was on inside. It was past midnight. My mother went to bed at nine without fail every single night of her lif

Then after a while Elder Mira finally spoke .I need to tell you a story," she said. "And I need you to listen to all of it before you ask questions. Can you do that?""Yes," I said. She looked at me for a moment longer. Then she folded her hands in her lap and looked into the fire and began."Two hundred years ago," she said, "there were no pack Alphas."I opened my mouth. She held up one finger.I closed it."There were wolves," she continued. "Many of them. Living in territories, yes. Forming communities, yes. But the rigid hierarchy you know Alpha, Beta, omega, the ranking system, the dominance structure none of that existed. Wolves lived differently then." She paused. "And alongside the wolves lived another kind entirely. Not wolves. Not human. Something older than both."The fire popped softly."The Moon Witches," she said. The words landed in the quiet of the lodge like stones dropped into still water.I felt Selene go very still inside me."They were the first children of the m

The courtyard was already full by the time Sera and I got there.Every wolf in the Ironveil Pack, warriors, omegas, elders, mothers with babies balanced on their hips, all of them packed into the main courtyard with their breath coming out in small white clouds. The great pack hall at one end, the elder lodge at the other, and in the middle, the raised stone platform where the Alpha addressed his people.I had stood in this crowd a hundred times.Always at the back. Always invisible.Today felt different.People moved when they saw me coming Not out of respect More like they didn't want to be too close, like whatever had happened to me last night was something they could catch if they stood near enough. I watched the small shifts, the shuffled feet, the turned shoulders, eyes that found somewhere else to be the moment they almost met mine, and I felt Selene stir low in my chest.Let them move. Her voice was quieter than usual. We never needed their closeness anyway.I kept walking.Se
