Chapter 2

Author: Flying Cockroach
The hospital was private, and since Steve was a major shareholder, the doctors couldn't refuse his demands.

I clenched my fists so tightly that my nails dug deep into my palms, leaving bloody marks all over. I wanted so badly to punch him, but my body was too weak. I couldn't even lift my arm.

As my attending doctor, the one I trusted, was pulled away, another doctor from the same department rushed over to check on me, his voice filled with urgency.

“Preliminary scans show that your uterine wall has ruptured, which means we can’t save the baby. You also have fractures and multiple puncture wounds. We need to operate immediately…”

Sweating heavily, I reached out with trembling fingers, motioning for the surgical consent form.

“You can't sign for such a major surgery by yourself! Where are your family members?”

I forced my cracked voice, “It’s fine… I can sign... My family’s overseas.”

The nurse sneered and muttered under her breath to the doctor, “What's the rush? Everyone’s already talking about it. She’s the homewrecker who crashed the wedding. Even if she had family here, they probably wouldn't want to show their faces.”

My hand froze for a second, but I gritted my teeth and signed anyway. Even that tiny movement drained all my strength. I couldn’t even speak anymore.

I was rushed into emergency surgery, and after a day and night of fighting for my life, I was finally pulled back from death’s door and transferred to the ICU. When I woke up, I was covered head to toe in gauze and tubes sticking out of my body everywhere. I looked like a mummy.

A nurse was changing my IV while my mind slowly cleared, and that was when I fully realized my situation.

My leg was broken. My skin was torn and mangled. My baby was gone.

I remembered what the doctor said during our premarital checkup—that I had a naturally thin uterine wall, making it extremely difficult for me to conceive. The baby was a miracle, and I had planned to surprise Steve after the wedding to tell him the good news. Yet, before I even got the chance, our baby had been murdered by its own father.

The baby had been my only blood tie aside from my brother, Ashton Grey. Now, the baby was gone, and I might never get another chance to conceive again.

“My baby…” I croaked, every word cutting through me like a knife.

“You’re lucky to even be alive. Stop whining about the baby. You’re just making more work for us.” She muttered coldly as she finished changing the IV and then stomped off, but not before sneering under her breath, “These homewreckers think getting pregnant gives them the right to crash someone else’s wedding. It’s disgusting. Obviously, the man loves his real fiancée more. What the hell was she thinking?”

I could feel the contempt and disgust in her voice.

“I'm not… a homewrecker…”

My voice was so faint it barely stirred the stillness of the ICU. No one heard me.

I stayed in the ICU for a week, hovering between life and death. And while I lay there, Steve erased every trace of me from his social media.

Then, he posted a new wedding photo. Only this time, the bride standing next to him wasn’t me—it was Quinn. They were smiling brightly, each holding up a marriage certificate.

The tiny bit of strength I had regained shattered the moment a nurse brought my phone to me, especially when I saw the wedding photo. Then I received a message Steve sent me.

“Pack your things and get out once you’re discharged. Quinn wants you out of her sight.”

We chose the home together, and I had poured my heart into decorating it, yet I was the one being thrown out.

The emotional blow triggered a relapse. I crashed again and was rushed into another emergency surgery.

Rumors started flying through the entire hospital. They said I was the other woman between Steve and Quinn; they said I got pregnant to trap Steve; they said I drugged Quinn to cause her miscarriage.

“I mean, come on, Quinn's been with Steve since the beginning, through thick and thin. Now that Steve’s made it big, of course, some trash would try and latch on.”

“I heard Quinn’s health is messed up now, and she might never have kids again. That homewrecker should rot in hell!”

Even though doctors were supposed to remain neutral, they were human too. Their disgust and judgment were impossible to ignore.

Ever since they decided I was the villain, life in the hospital became hell. I got dirty looks, I was isolated, and I heard whispers behind my back.

That was until Steve’s sister, Jacqueline York, came to see me.

“Summer… How did this happen? He promised he’d love you forever! I just got back from a business trip. I didn’t even get a chance to congratulate you guys…” She broke down, swearing she’d make Steve pay.

Finally, I allowed myself to cry, sobbing hoarsely into the night. Only then did the hospital staff finally realize I was Steve’s fiancée and childhood sweetheart. It was Quinn, the so-called girlfriend, who had been the real third party all along.

With someone finally standing up for me, I could finally sleep peacefully. However, that very night, I woke up thirsty and reached for some water, only to overhear a conversation coming from the next room.

“You idiot, why couldn't you be patient? If you’d waited a few more days until she was dead, you could’ve inherited half her estate!”

“How can you say that?” Steve snapped back. “She caused Quinn to lose the baby. Did you expect me to sit back and watch?”

There was an old saying that said, “What goes around comes around.”After the news of me was taken down, several others started trending instead, such as “Mr. York Hits His Fiancée into Miscarriage for the Other Woman”, “Quinn is the Mistress”, and “Sleeping Her Way to the Top: The Scandal Rocking York Group.” The trending news couldn’t be buried so easily, especially with the support of the Carters and Ash behind it. The best part? All of it was true, and we blurred the faces of everyone involved. Hence, even if Steve tried to make a fuss, there was no way to twist the story. It didn’t take long for the tide of public opinion to turn. Netizens flocked to all of York Group’s official accounts, and in an instant, the company stock took a major dive.My phone rang several times after that, but I didn’t answer. Every call went straight to the blacklist, and soon, silence filled my phone. After the event, I left for medical treatment overseas with Ben to heal from my leg injury. He t

The top trending news was a video, filmed from some unknown journalist’s perspective. It covered the incident that had just happened at the dinner, but the sound had been removed. The contents read, “Mr. Ben Carter’s girlfriend cheated with Mr. Steve York. Mr. York and his wife showed up demanding an explanation, only to be slapped by Mr. Carter.”The comment section was flooded with insults and mockery.[That mistress is way too bold. She doesn’t even seem fazed despite being exposed.][Look at Mr. Carter. It’s my first time seeing a CEO enjoy being cheated on.][That mistress must be a prostitute, right? How much does she charge per night? Is 200 dollars enough?]My name wasn’t mentioned in the video, but sharp-eyed netizens had traced it back to me through Ben's public announcement and found my account. They launched a full-on attack on me and even went as far as digging up my background and home address. Then, several self-proclaimed “journalists” accounts started claiming t

Before I could even respond, Ben was already on his feet.“In what world do we just let anybody walk in here? Security! Get them out of here!” he barked.“Try me!” A cold voice cut through the noise, and Steve stepped out of the crowd with a dark expression.Instantly, Quinn clung to his arm like a child with her favorite toy, her whole body practically draped over him.Our commotion quickly drew attention. Guests started putting down their wine glasses, curious to watch the drama unfold.Quinn batted her lashes sweetly and said in her softest voice, “Is this… Summer’s friend? Wow, I’m so jealous. It must be nice having such a handsome guy always on your side!”Before her words could settle, Steve’s face darkened even more.“Summer,” he growled, “enough with the games. First, you block me everywhere, and now you’re sneaking around behind my back with some other guy?”A collective gasp swept through the room.Anyone who knew Ben knew he had a new wife whom he spoiled beyond rea

I forced myself to endure the aching in my back just to finalize the paperwork for our marriage. The clerk at the office noticed how strained my smile was and even subtly hinted, with her eyes, for me to blink if I was being forced. Meanwhile, the culprit behind my sore back showed absolutely no remorse. In fact, he looked like he was ready to break out into a dance. The moment we got our marriage certificate, Ben plastered our photo all over his social media with the caption, “After all these years, my dream has finally come true.”Underneath, the comments flooded in. “Congratulations!”“When’s the wedding? Save us some cake!”Ben took the opportunity to lean over and ask me, “Summer, when are we having the wedding?”I lowered my eyes and answered, “Once I’ve healed.”Honestly, even as I said it, guilt gnawed at me. It wasn’t just the physical injuries holding me back; it was the emotional ones. The last wedding had left me deeply traumatized. The thought of putting on a wed

“You sure sound surprised. You didn't know your ex-girlfriend, the one you tossed aside, was once pregnant, huh?”Ben enunciated the words ‘tossed aside and ‘didn't know,’ his tone filled with anger and disgust.Steve’s face turned as white as a sheet. His eyes darted around, panicked, and his legs shook so badly that it looked like he might collapse.“You… You were pregnant?” Steve stammered.“You killed it with the kick.”“I… killed it?”“You killed it,” I repeated flatly.Steve didn’t say another word. I watched as the air seemed to drain right out of him, leaving him looking like a cracked glass vase about to shatter.I let out a cold laugh inside. When he almost beat me to death, he didn’t feel a shred of regret. Now, hearing that the baby was gone, he wanted to play the guilt card?It was never about me. My survival didn’t matter to him. It was just that, somewhere deep in that selfish brain of his, carrying on his bloodline was a priority. He was a self-centered, hollo

Ash was my only family left. He held the other half of our parents’ inheritance but had immigrated overseas years ago. He couldn’t help with anything happening here, which was why I ended up being bullied without anyone to turn to.When I told him everything that happened, he sounded surprised over the phone. “Are you sure? Are you finally dumping that piece of trash and moving on to a better life?”If it had been the old me, I would’ve argued with him for calling Steve trash, and we probably would’ve ended up in a full-blown fight. Yet now, I agreed with him completely. Fighting with my family over Steve had never been worth it.The next few days, I stayed in the hospital to recover. The staff, guilty over what had happened, took extra care of me. As for Steve, after a warning from Ash, he didn’t dare show his face again. Surprisingly, these were the most peaceful days I had experienced in the past eight years. After I was discharged, I went to meet my blind date.“You’re… Ben Ca
