Chapter 3

مؤلف: Clara Whitman
My voice was thick with tears when I asked Grandpa why he had never come looking for me over the past few years.

Grandpa sighed before answering, "Your Madre swore never to rely on the Bellini family ever again after she left Siraluna. However, she sent a letter to me before she passed away. She told me that you loved your Padre and hoped that I wouldn't interfere with your life."

"I accepted her request," he continued with a tremble in his voice. "But I never would have imagined that my acceptance would cause you to experience so much hardship."

Tears spilled down my cheeks again as I pressed a hand to my mouth.

The sky had darkened by the time I hung up.

I returned to the estate on Seaford Island.

The lights were blazing. The Caruso family's black cars were parked in front of the entrance. Dozens of Made Men were stationed on either side of the doors.

I had just strode into the hall when I spotted Isabella wearing my tailored, black gown.

Lorenzo stood next to her. Their fingers were laced together tightly.

Lorenzo's Madre, Paola Lione, sat in the main seat, looking pleased as she gave Isabella a once-over.

"The Caruso family is willing to alter the engagement since Isabella is the successor of the Romano family, and the two of them are in love. They can host their engagement party on the same day as the ring-inheritance ceremony that's taking place in the next three days."

Paola raised her hand, prompting her men to haul over a dozen black cases into the hall.

The cases were packed with jewelry, tailored gowns, rubies, and the partnership contract with Carmine Logistics.

The items were originally meant for me, but they were being displayed in a neat row for Isabella at that moment.

Tears streamed down Isabella's face as she pressed a hand over her mouth. "Grazie, Mamma," she said.

The smile on Paola's face widened when she heard the way Isabella addressed her. "Come here. Put on the engagement ring."

Lorenzo took Isabella's hand. He was seconds away from slipping the ring on her finger when one of the Romano family members noticed me standing by the door.

"You're back, Principessa."

A faint smile stretched across Veronica's lips.

Isabella's eyes were glimmering with glee when she looked at me, but she fixed an uneasy expression on her face.

Meanwhile, Papa was sitting on the couch. He didn't even bother to explain the situation to me.

Lorenzo glanced at me for a few seconds before approaching me. "Return the Caruso family's badge to me."

I looked down at the black-gold badge that was pinned on the front of my gown.

Lorenzo had personally pinned the badge on me when we got engaged. He had said that I would be the future Donna of the Caruso family as long as I had it. However, at that moment, he didn't even bother greeting me before demanding that I return the badge to him so that he could give it to another woman.

I looked up and stared at him.

"I have something to ask you before I return the badge to you. Why did you kneel in the chapel for the entire night if you didn't love me? Why did you force our parents to agree to our engagement?"

Lorenzo's expression darkened. "I can't believe that you're shameless enough to ask me those questions. Don't you know why I changed my mind?"

"I don't," I said while staring at him. "Tell me what I did."

Lorenzo was about to speak when Isabella suddenly dashed to his side and grabbed his arm.

"Stop it," she said. "Sophia has already lost the title of successor. She must be feeling so upset. I don't blame her, no matter what she did to me in the past."

She then sank to her knees in front of me.

Everyone inhaled sharply.

"Mi dispiace, Sophia," Isabella continued. "I shouldn't have failed to get into Harmond. I shouldn't have made Papa feel sorry for me. I can let go of the title of successor and Lorenzo if you're truly unwilling to give up on them. I just hope that you won't hurt me or Mamma in the future."

She leaned down, looking as if she was actually going to kiss my shoes.

Lorenzo immediately hauled her to her feet.

"You don't need to kneel for a despicable woman like her, Isabella!" he exclaimed. "I'll never let anyone hurt you again as long as I live!"

I was briefly stunned upon hearing his words.

Lorenzo had said the same words to me in the past.

It turned out that a man could reuse his vow whenever he pleased.

I couldn't help but feel a sense of irony as I watched Lorenzo and Isabella embrace each other.

"Are you done?" I sneered. "Tell me what I did if you are."

Isabella shook her head wildly.

However, Lorenzo's sympathy for her only grew the more she tried to stop him.

"I'm not going to hide the truth for your sake this time," he hissed, glaring at me. "You already have everything. Why did you hire the thugs from the Casano family to ruin Isabella on her 18th birthday?"

Lorenzo swatted Isabella away, his face twisted in disgust. "I would never have touched you if you weren't drugged. Only a despicable person would use such lowly tricks to tie down a man."The last spark of Isabella's hope was snuffed out.Lorenzo slowly approached me. He reached out and tried to hold my hand, but I stepped back before he could touch me. "Mi dispiace, Sophia," he said. "I had no idea that Isabella had been lying to me the entire time. I never would have treated you that way if I knew."I looked at him calmly. In the past, I would be plagued with worry for a long time if Lorenzo so much as frowned. However, as he stood before me at that moment, he felt like a complete stranger."Your actions won't be erased just because you were lied to, Lorenzo," I said.Lorenzo shook his head wildly. "I'll make it up to you. Let's restore our engagement. I'll use the rest of my life to prove that—""No need," I said, interrupting him. "I don't want you anymore."…That ni

"I didn't know that Veronica actually tampered with the brakes," Papa said in a shaky voice. "I just thought that she was jealous of Chiara. I had just secured my position as the Don. I couldn't afford to let outsiders find out that there was a scandal between me and my lovers."Grandpa shot a cold look at him. "You decided not to investigate your wife's death all for the sake of your position?"Papa suddenly let out a roar before he lunged at Veronica and clamped his fingers around her neck."You ruined my family!" he screamed. "I'm going to kill you!"Veronica frantically thrashed around.Isabella shrieked before she grabbed a gun from one of the family members. Her entire body was trembling as she gripped it tightly and shouted, "Get your hands off Mamma! I'll kill you if you get any closer!"Papa stared at her with a stunned expression. The daughter he had spoiled rotten for so many years had aimed a gun at him. He suddenly burst into laughter, but he sounded absolutely miser

The screen in the hall lit up again.A recording of what happened at the club played on the screen. In the video, Isabella was wearing a cap and mask as she personally handed a stack of cash to the Associates of the Casano family."Escape from the back door once Lorenzo arrives," she said. "Don't forget to leave Sophia's private code behind. We must make him believe that she's the one who wants to ruin me."Her voice echoed clearly from the recording, burrowing into everyone's ears.Isabella was trembling as she instinctively took a step back. However, the members of the Bellini family blocked her path.Lorenzo stared unblinkingly at the screen. "No… This can't be real…" he muttered. The young man opened another document that showed Isabella's transaction records, proving that she wired money to the thugs. There was also a statement from one of the Associates. The Associate confessed that they were just following her orders to put on a show.Isabella drugged herself beforehand

The front doors swung open once again. The Romano family's Consigliere and lawyers strode into the hall, keeping their eyes on the floor."What are you doing here?" Papa snapped, glaring at them.No one answered him. A few of them nodded respectfully at Grandpa before turning to me and greeting me."Principessa."Their united voices echoed around the hall. One of the lawyers opened a black folder and said, "Ms. Chiara Bellini left a set of written documents behind before she passed away with the intent of managing her own assets after her death. Ms. Sophia would automatically become her number one beneficiary upon her 18th birthday—"Papa furiously interrupted him, exclaiming, "That's impossible! I took charge of Carmine Logistics with my own hands!""You only have the authority to manage it," the lawyer explained calmly. The Romano family's Consigliere stepped forward and said, "We were willing to follow your orders because Ms. Chiara and the Bellini family vouched for you, D

The Bellini family's doctor swiftly approached me and tended to my wounds. The bastards who forced me to my knees earlier didn't dare to look at me.Meanwhile, Isabella rushed to Papa's side in a panic and pulled him up."That's impossible!" she screamed. "Chiara was supposed to be nothing more than a wretch who was abandoned by her family. If she truly was the heiress of the Bellini family, why didn't anyone look for Sophia for so many years? Why didn't anyone step in when we were harassing her—"She hastily slapped her hand over her mouth before she finished her sentence.I couldn't help but laugh as I looked at her pale face."Why did you stop talking?" I asked. "You're wondering why the Bellini family didn't take revenge against you and your Madre after you harassed Mamma and me for so many years, am I right?"Isabella shook her head wildly. "I didn't mean that."Papa crawled back up to his feet before he began scolding me. "Watch your tone, Sophia. Isabella is your sister.

A deathly silence descended upon the hall.A silver-haired old man dressed in a tailored black suit slowly entered the hall, gripping a black cane.He hadn't said a single word, but his intimidating air made everyone hold their breath. An elderly Consigliere of the Caruso family was the first to recognize Grandpa. His voice was shaking when he exclaimed, "Don Bellini! He's the Don of Siraluna's Bellini family, Vittorio Bellini!"Gasps echoed across the hall. The Made Man who had been exacting "justice" on me hurriedly lowered his head.Papa quickly adjusted his tie and fixed an amicable smile on his face before he approached Grandpa."I've heard much about you, Don Bellini," he said. "I'm Marco Romano. I didn't know that you were coming to New Vormino. I would have personally picked you up at the airport if I had known."Paola also pushed Lorenzo to the front, saying, "This is my son, Lorenzo, the successor of the Caruso family. The Caruso family is happy to assist you in any w
