Chapter 2

مؤلف: Chasing Spring
Leonard rubbed his temples.

"I didn't mean for it to happen. I walked into the wrong room that night. Only after I woke up did I realize she was your student."

"But I don't regret it."

His gaze lingered on my face.

"After all, an eighteen-year-old girl really is fresh and young."

My mind roared.

I lifted my head and stared in disbelief at the man I had loved for more than a decade.

I couldn't hold back anymore. I grabbed everything in reach and hurled it at Leonard.

He didn't dodge, not even when I had exhausted every bit of strength I had.

"Are you done venting now?"

He looked helpless and reached for me.

I picked up the last teacup and threw it at him.

"Get out!"

The cup shattered, and a shard sliced my hand open.

Leonard's face tightened. He grabbed my hand and forced me to let him treat the cut.

His voice remained slow and steady.

"Since you already know, I'll have Ruby move in to stay during the pregnancy.

"It's her first pregnancy. She has no experience. You've had a child before, so you can take care of her."

My head snapped up.

"What did you say?"

Leonard turned the wedding ring on his finger and pinched my cheek as if I were being unreasonable.

"Be good. Ruby will move in later. You'll have to work a little harder these next few months and look after her, good wife.

"I've already arranged leave for you at the university. It won't affect your job."

I finally couldn't take it anymore and screamed.

"How can you be this disgusting?

"You want your wife to wait on your mistress? Leonard Pitt, are you insane?"

Leonard chuckled and pressed a finger to my lips.

"Shh. Keep your voice down. Don't make it sound so ugly.

"You don't want your mother, Emily, to find out, do you? She's in the hospital. She can't take any shock.

"Honey, if you refuse to behave, I can't guarantee someone won't accidentally say something to her."

His smile didn't change, but a cold sweat broke out across my back.

He was using my mother to threaten me.

Back when he had been a penniless nobody, my mother was the only person who agreed to let me marry him.

She had even given Leonard the seed money for his first business.

Tears blurred my vision again, but this time Leonard had run out of patience.

He glanced at the watch on his wrist, frowning irritably.

"Ruby will be here soon. I'll give you five minutes to think."

My fists clenched and unclenched.

In the end, they fell open weakly.

I nodded, numb.

As if rewarding me, he kissed my forehead, then went out to pick up Ruby.

Our son thought I was in the way. He shoved me aside.

He had always behaved like a miniature adult, but now he lost that composure. Even his steps toward the door were bright with excitement.

I collapsed helplessly to the floor.

Behind me, still hidden away, was the prenatal report I had never had the chance to show him.

The front door opened again.

My eyes met Ruby Sutton's.

Her stomach was already slightly rounded, and when she looked at me, the smugness in her eyes was impossible to hide.

"Professor, I'll be in your care from now on."

I said nothing.

Our son walked over.

"Mom, give Aunt Ruby the primary bedroom. You're old anyway. You can sleep anywhere."

"Fine."

I agreed without hesitation.

My husband and son no longer belonged to me. What was the point of clinging to a bedroom?

Leonard paused, as if he hadn't expected me to agree so easily.

After all, back when I had helped him build his business from nothing, I hadn't been willing to suffer even a single cent of loss.

Ignoring his stare, I turned to leave.

Leonard blocked my path, his eyes dark.

"There's no rush. Since you're being so generous, clean the room before you go."

Ruby came forward too and affectionately looped her arm through mine.

"Then I'll have to trouble you, Professor. I want my baby to stay close to you and rub off a little of your good luck.

"Make sure you clean every corner properly, okay, Professor?"

Her tone sounded warm, but she clearly treated me like a servant.

Leonard and our son were completely unmoved.

My fists clenched on their own.

I turned and walked away.

Leonard trembled violently."I'm sorry..."I said nothing more and returned to the flower shop without hesitation. One day later, a signed divorce agreement was slipped under my door.Leonard voluntarily left with nothing and gave all his assets to me.Three years later, a wedding was held by the sea.It was mine and Luke Hale's.When my life had been at its darkest, he had given me a place to stay. When my life slowly grew bright again, he had never been stingy with praise. He had pulled me through the worst of times and made the good times brighter. He had done all of it.I was not afraid to step into marriage again. So after two years of dating, I wore a white wedding gown, held Luke's arm, and walked down the aisle.Leonard stood not far away and watched everything. His eyes were red, as if he had cried for a very long time."Dad, we can still stop it."Our son stood beside him, his face anxious.Leonard shook his head."No."I wronged her. She has the right to p

I nodded, my voice turning cold."But forgiveness doesn't mean we can go back to the way things were."I don't want custody of you. I can take financial responsibility for you, but I won't be your mother anymore."My son froze."Why, Mom? You clearly loved me so much before."I know I was wrong. I'll change..."He grabbed my hand anxiously.I didn't pull away. I simply showed him the scar on my wrist. It was the mark from where he had stabbed me with the needle."Do you see this? The needle could be pulled out, but this scar will never disappear."I can forgive you, but I can't love you again."You're old enough now. You should be responsible for your own life."My son stood there, trembling all over.I didn't look at him again. I turned and left.I left him alone at the table, sobbing as if his heart had been torn apart. After walking a short distance, I stopped impatiently and turned toward the person hiding around the corner."Come out. I saw you."The shadow in the

By the time I learned about all of that, half a year had already passed.During those six months, after handling my mother's funeral, I opened a flower shop in a small seaside town. After leaving teaching, what I liked most was tending flowers and plants.I worked from sunrise to sunset. The painful memories rarely visited me anymore. If Leonard Pitt hadn't kept delaying the divorce, my days would have been quite pleasant. That day, I opened the shop as usual and saw someone I did not want to see.Leonard had actually found me.He stood against the light at the entrance, so haggard he was almost unrecognizable. The suit that had always fit him perfectly now hung loose on his frame. The moment he saw me, his eyes reddened."Grace Murtaugh..."He strode toward me and reached out to grab me.I frowned and immediately hid behind my landlord, Luke Hale. I mouthed silently to him, "Help me."Luke understood at once and wrapped an arm around my waist.Leonard's hand froze in mi

The once-warm home was now empty.Everything that had belonged to Grace was gone, replaced by Ruby Sutton's pink little things. Before, Leonard had thought the young girl's taste was cute. Now it suddenly made him sick.He sat blankly on the sofa as countless images flashed before his eyes. The first time they met.Grace Murtaugh had stood beneath the blossoming trees on the quad, her white dress drifting in the wind. She smiled at him, her eyes curving into crescents."Hi. I'm Grace Murtaugh."From that first glance, he had fallen in love. Then the scene shifted to their wedding day.Grace wore a white wedding gown, holding his arm, happiness filling her eyes."I do."In that moment, Leonard had felt like the happiest man in the world. Then came the day their son was born.Grace lay on the hospital bed, pale but glowing with joy."Honey, we have a son."His phone suddenly rang, breaking the memory.Leonard swiped the screen several times before he managed to answer.

Inside the box was a glass jar filled with bloody fluid, the faint outline of a fetus barely visible within.Leonard could no longer hold it steady. Red liquid splashed everywhere."What the hell is that? That's disgusting!"Ruby covered her mouth and backed away in revulsion. Our son frowned too."Why would Mom send something like this?"Leonard stood frozen, staring hard at the mess on the floor. What was this?A child? He and I had actually had another child?Because my body had been damaged when I gave birth to our son, doctors had said it would be very hard for me to get pregnant again. We had tried for years without success, and eventually we had both let it go."Impossible..."Leonard murmured, grabbing his phone to call me.No answer. He called again.Still no answer. He called more than ten times in a row, but all he heard was the cold mechanical voice."The number you have dialed is powered off."Leonard rushed out of the banquet hall like a madman and drov

The doctor sighed and left the room.I slept for a few more hours. When I woke, I reached for my phone, ready to contact a lawyer and draft a divorce agreement. Before I could, the emergency department called."Ma'am, the patient's condition has suddenly worsened. Please come see her for the last time."The calm I had barely regained was ripped open.I tore out the IV needle and staggered toward the emergency center.I found my mother lying alone on a bed in the corridor, with only an intern nurse beside her."Where is everyone?"I grabbed the nurse's hand."Where are the doctors? Why is no one here?"Fear kept exploding in my chest. How could there be no doctor in such a large hospital?Hadn't Leonard said he had assigned a medical team to my mother? The young nurse stammered."I heard Mr. Pitt's wife had an incident, so Mr. Pitt called all the doctors upstairs to examine her."My mind went blank.I instinctively called Leonard.I had no idea how many calls it took be
