"Why?"

I forced the words out, pressing down the storm rising inside me.

I couldn't believe that the husband I had loved for more than ten years had suddenly announced he had cheated.

Leonard Pitt met my eyes without flinching.

"Six months ago, someone drugged me. I accidentally slept with a young girl.

"I gave her money afterward and sent her away, but the girl turned out fertile—she actually got pregnant."

The corners of his mouth lifted before he realized it.

"When our son heard it was a girl, he begged me to keep her.

"You have no idea how happy he was that day."

His laughter sounded pleased. My chest went cold.

I turned to look at our son. He showed no guilt at all.

"I want a little sister. It doesn't matter who gives birth to her."

Tears fell before I could stop them.

I truly couldn't believe it. How had the husband and son who had once loved me like their lives depended on it become like this?

Leonard sighed and handed me his silk handkerchief.

"Is it really that serious? Isn't this normal in our circle? I thought you'd be used to it by now.

"Don't worry. Once the child is born, I'll send the girl abroad. She won't threaten your position."

I pushed his hand away and lowered my head, trying to swallow my sobs.

Yesterday, I had still been the most envied wife in our circle.

My husband had loved me for over ten years without a single scandal.

My son was mature beyond his age, a once-in-a-century business prodigy.

How had they both betrayed me without warning today?

This couldn't be real.

I rubbed my eyes hard, trying to prove it had all been an illusion.

Leonard took my chin and wiped my tears.

"Enough. Stop making a scene. Aside from a few friends in our circle, no one knows about my affair.

"You'll always be Mrs. Pitt. I promise, okay?"

It was as if someone had slapped me awake.

My hand moved to my lower abdomen. Suddenly, the child there felt absurd.

Leonard frowned and tried to pull me into his arms, but I shoved him away.

"Get out. Stay away from me. You're filthy."

He raised both hands and stepped back.

"Fine. I won't touch you. How about I let our son talk to you?"

My tears fell onto the back of my hand.

I stood up abruptly and overturned the table.

"I want a divorce.

"I'd rather die than raise your mistress's child."

The air went dead still.

Leonard's gaze turned cold.

Disappointment filled our son's face as well.

"Mom, divorce him if you want. I won't go with you.

"And the moment you walk out that door, Aunt Ruby will be my new mom tomorrow."

The strength I had just gathered drained away.

I stood there, wondering if I had misheard him.

"Who did you just say?"

Ruby Sutton.

She was one of my unmarried college students who had gotten pregnant.

The moment the pregnancy was confirmed, she couldn't wait to drop out.

I had advised her to put her studies first.

Ruby had only looked at me with disdain.

"Please, Professor. My husband has money. He could afford ten kids, let alone one."

At the time, I had only felt sorry for her.

I never imagined the child she carried was my husband's.

My nose stung so badly I could barely speak.

"Why? Why did it have to be my student?"

Leonard trembled violently."I'm sorry..."I said nothing more and returned to the flower shop without hesitation. One day later, a signed divorce agreement was slipped under my door.Leonard voluntarily left with nothing and gave all his assets to me.Three years later, a wedding was held by the sea.It was mine and Luke Hale's.When my life had been at its darkest, he had given me a place to stay. When my life slowly grew bright again, he had never been stingy with praise. He had pulled me through the worst of times and made the good times brighter. He had done all of it.I was not afraid to step into marriage again. So after two years of dating, I wore a white wedding gown, held Luke's arm, and walked down the aisle.Leonard stood not far away and watched everything. His eyes were red, as if he had cried for a very long time."Dad, we can still stop it."Our son stood beside him, his face anxious.Leonard shook his head."No."I wronged her. She has the right to p

I nodded, my voice turning cold."But forgiveness doesn't mean we can go back to the way things were."I don't want custody of you. I can take financial responsibility for you, but I won't be your mother anymore."My son froze."Why, Mom? You clearly loved me so much before."I know I was wrong. I'll change..."He grabbed my hand anxiously.I didn't pull away. I simply showed him the scar on my wrist. It was the mark from where he had stabbed me with the needle."Do you see this? The needle could be pulled out, but this scar will never disappear."I can forgive you, but I can't love you again."You're old enough now. You should be responsible for your own life."My son stood there, trembling all over.I didn't look at him again. I turned and left.I left him alone at the table, sobbing as if his heart had been torn apart. After walking a short distance, I stopped impatiently and turned toward the person hiding around the corner."Come out. I saw you."The shadow in the

By the time I learned about all of that, half a year had already passed.During those six months, after handling my mother's funeral, I opened a flower shop in a small seaside town. After leaving teaching, what I liked most was tending flowers and plants.I worked from sunrise to sunset. The painful memories rarely visited me anymore. If Leonard Pitt hadn't kept delaying the divorce, my days would have been quite pleasant. That day, I opened the shop as usual and saw someone I did not want to see.Leonard had actually found me.He stood against the light at the entrance, so haggard he was almost unrecognizable. The suit that had always fit him perfectly now hung loose on his frame. The moment he saw me, his eyes reddened."Grace Murtaugh..."He strode toward me and reached out to grab me.I frowned and immediately hid behind my landlord, Luke Hale. I mouthed silently to him, "Help me."Luke understood at once and wrapped an arm around my waist.Leonard's hand froze in mi

The once-warm home was now empty.Everything that had belonged to Grace was gone, replaced by Ruby Sutton's pink little things. Before, Leonard had thought the young girl's taste was cute. Now it suddenly made him sick.He sat blankly on the sofa as countless images flashed before his eyes. The first time they met.Grace Murtaugh had stood beneath the blossoming trees on the quad, her white dress drifting in the wind. She smiled at him, her eyes curving into crescents."Hi. I'm Grace Murtaugh."From that first glance, he had fallen in love. Then the scene shifted to their wedding day.Grace wore a white wedding gown, holding his arm, happiness filling her eyes."I do."In that moment, Leonard had felt like the happiest man in the world. Then came the day their son was born.Grace lay on the hospital bed, pale but glowing with joy."Honey, we have a son."His phone suddenly rang, breaking the memory.Leonard swiped the screen several times before he managed to answer.

Inside the box was a glass jar filled with bloody fluid, the faint outline of a fetus barely visible within.Leonard could no longer hold it steady. Red liquid splashed everywhere."What the hell is that? That's disgusting!"Ruby covered her mouth and backed away in revulsion. Our son frowned too."Why would Mom send something like this?"Leonard stood frozen, staring hard at the mess on the floor. What was this?A child? He and I had actually had another child?Because my body had been damaged when I gave birth to our son, doctors had said it would be very hard for me to get pregnant again. We had tried for years without success, and eventually we had both let it go."Impossible..."Leonard murmured, grabbing his phone to call me.No answer. He called again.Still no answer. He called more than ten times in a row, but all he heard was the cold mechanical voice."The number you have dialed is powered off."Leonard rushed out of the banquet hall like a madman and drov

The doctor sighed and left the room.I slept for a few more hours. When I woke, I reached for my phone, ready to contact a lawyer and draft a divorce agreement. Before I could, the emergency department called."Ma'am, the patient's condition has suddenly worsened. Please come see her for the last time."The calm I had barely regained was ripped open.I tore out the IV needle and staggered toward the emergency center.I found my mother lying alone on a bed in the corridor, with only an intern nurse beside her."Where is everyone?"I grabbed the nurse's hand."Where are the doctors? Why is no one here?"Fear kept exploding in my chest. How could there be no doctor in such a large hospital?Hadn't Leonard said he had assigned a medical team to my mother? The young nurse stammered."I heard Mr. Pitt's wife had an incident, so Mr. Pitt called all the doctors upstairs to examine her."My mind went blank.I instinctively called Leonard.I had no idea how many calls it took be
