Chapter 3

Autor: Chasing Spring
"There are dozens of maids in this villa. They're more professional than I am."

The next second, Leonard's words pinned me in place.

"Quite a temper. You can leave, but think about your mother. If you won't do it, I'll have her do it."

My clenched fists loosened powerlessly.

I gritted my teeth and entered the primary bedroom, ready to collect my things.

But when our son came in after me, he simply threw everything I owned out the door.

Bottles and jars shattered across the floor.

When he looked at me, his face was full of righteous entitlement.

"Mom, cleaning up like that is too slow. Besides, all this stuff is old. It should've been thrown away already."

Leonard reached out, trying to pat my back and smooth things over.

"All right, Grace. I'll buy every ocean-view villa in the city and put them in your name. You like the sea, don't you? Stay there for a while."

His grand, polished words made me sick.

I avoided his hand, finished cleaning the room, and left at once.

Half an hour later, a scream came from the primary bedroom.

Several bodyguards dragged me upstairs.

A bright needle lay half-hidden on the bed.

Ruby was buried in Leonard's arms, crying pitifully.

"Leonard, I'm so scared. It almost touched my belly. Will the baby be okay?"

Leonard patiently comforted her. When he turned to me, his eyes were full of disgust.

"Grace Murtaugh, when did you become this vicious?

"And you're supposed to be a teacher. Don't you have any tolerance at all? I told you Ruby wouldn't threaten your position. Why do you have to target her?

"You hid a needle that long in the bed. Were you trying to kill her?"

I was baffled.

"What?"

Before I could react, our son, who had been silent in the corner, rushed at me.

The next second, pain tore through my wrist.

That shining needle had been stabbed into my right wrist.

My right hand nearly went numb at once.

Still unsatisfied, my son swung his fists at me.

"Bad Mom! Bad Mom! You wanted to stab Aunt Ruby with this needle, so I'm stabbing you for her!"

His blows weren't strong, but my tears still fell.

I had always thought my son was too mature, too silent, too much like Leonard.

I had always hoped he could act like a real child, that he could cry, laugh, lose his temper.

But I never imagined the first time I saw him lose his temper would be for an outsider, and against me.

I looked up at Leonard. My eyes had never held such disappointment.

"Do you really think I did this?"

Leonard did not answer for a long time.

Then Ruby suddenly cried out.

"Mr. Pitt, my stomach hurts. Is something wrong with the baby?

"If I lose this child, what's the point of living?"

Leonard held her and comforted her. When he looked at me again, the last hesitation was gone.

"Today's incident is your fault. Our son doesn't know better, so endure it."

Seeing the wound on my wrist, he rubbed his temples.

"Besides, it's not a serious injury. Take care of it yourself.

"Don't worry about your mother. I won't take my anger out on her. I have a medical team watching her twenty-four hours a day. Nothing will happen."

With that, Leonard carried Ruby away.

A sudden cramp twisted through my abdomen.

I instinctively called after him.

The man turned around, his face full of impatience.

"What scheme are you trying now?

"Ruby is already like this, and you're still competing for attention. You've been pregnant before. How can you be this selfish?"

His scolding blocked every word in my throat.

The pain in my lower abdomen grew sharp and heavy, and I couldn't stop Leonard from leaving.

I could only reach out to my son, hoping he would help me up.

But he pushed me away in disgust and turned to chase after Leonard.

My stomach slammed hard against the edge of the coffee table.

I could feel blood slowly running down between my legs.

Driven by instinctive terror, I used the last of my strength to call after him.

"Owen Pitt, stop right there. Your little sister is in my belly. Save her."

My son's footsteps finally stopped.

Hope flickered back to life in my chest.

I softened my voice and asked him to call 911.

But a mocking curve appeared at the corner of his mouth.

"Mom, you're a liar. Dad said you can't have children anymore. How could you have a little sister in your belly?

"My little sister is in Aunt Ruby's belly. Stop pretending, Mom. It's gross."

The pain in my abdomen felt like a knife twisting inside me.

I tried to explain, but my son had already left without looking back.

In the end, a kind maid sent me to the hospital.

When I woke up, all I saw was the doctor's regretful face.

"I'm sorry. You were brought in too late. We couldn't save the child.

"Please don't be too sad. You can have another child in the future."

My hand rested on my flat abdomen.

Somehow, there wasn't much grief left.

There would be no future child.

And there would be nothing left between Leonard and me either.

I nodded, my voice turning cold."But forgiveness doesn't mean we can go back to the way things were."I don't want custody of you. I can take financial responsibility for you, but I won't be your mother anymore."My son froze."Why, Mom? You clearly loved me so much before."I know I was wrong. I'll change..."He grabbed my hand anxiously.I didn't pull away. I simply showed him the scar on my wrist. It was the mark from where he had stabbed me with the needle."Do you see this? The needle could be pulled out, but this scar will never disappear."I can forgive you, but I can't love you again."You're old enough now. You should be responsible for your own life."My son stood there, trembling all over.I didn't look at him again. I turned and left.I left him alone at the table, sobbing as if his heart had been torn apart. After walking a short distance, I stopped impatiently and turned toward the person hiding around the corner."Come out. I saw you."The shadow in the

By the time I learned about all of that, half a year had already passed.During those six months, after handling my mother's funeral, I opened a flower shop in a small seaside town. After leaving teaching, what I liked most was tending flowers and plants.I worked from sunrise to sunset. The painful memories rarely visited me anymore. If Leonard Pitt hadn't kept delaying the divorce, my days would have been quite pleasant. That day, I opened the shop as usual and saw someone I did not want to see.Leonard had actually found me.He stood against the light at the entrance, so haggard he was almost unrecognizable. The suit that had always fit him perfectly now hung loose on his frame. The moment he saw me, his eyes reddened."Grace Murtaugh..."He strode toward me and reached out to grab me.I frowned and immediately hid behind my landlord, Luke Hale. I mouthed silently to him, "Help me."Luke understood at once and wrapped an arm around my waist.Leonard's hand froze in mi

The once-warm home was now empty.Everything that had belonged to Grace was gone, replaced by Ruby Sutton's pink little things. Before, Leonard had thought the young girl's taste was cute. Now it suddenly made him sick.He sat blankly on the sofa as countless images flashed before his eyes. The first time they met.Grace Murtaugh had stood beneath the blossoming trees on the quad, her white dress drifting in the wind. She smiled at him, her eyes curving into crescents."Hi. I'm Grace Murtaugh."From that first glance, he had fallen in love. Then the scene shifted to their wedding day.Grace wore a white wedding gown, holding his arm, happiness filling her eyes."I do."In that moment, Leonard had felt like the happiest man in the world. Then came the day their son was born.Grace lay on the hospital bed, pale but glowing with joy."Honey, we have a son."His phone suddenly rang, breaking the memory.Leonard swiped the screen several times before he managed to answer.

Inside the box was a glass jar filled with bloody fluid, the faint outline of a fetus barely visible within.Leonard could no longer hold it steady. Red liquid splashed everywhere."What the hell is that? That's disgusting!"Ruby covered her mouth and backed away in revulsion. Our son frowned too."Why would Mom send something like this?"Leonard stood frozen, staring hard at the mess on the floor. What was this?A child? He and I had actually had another child?Because my body had been damaged when I gave birth to our son, doctors had said it would be very hard for me to get pregnant again. We had tried for years without success, and eventually we had both let it go."Impossible..."Leonard murmured, grabbing his phone to call me.No answer. He called again.Still no answer. He called more than ten times in a row, but all he heard was the cold mechanical voice."The number you have dialed is powered off."Leonard rushed out of the banquet hall like a madman and drov

The doctor sighed and left the room.I slept for a few more hours. When I woke, I reached for my phone, ready to contact a lawyer and draft a divorce agreement. Before I could, the emergency department called."Ma'am, the patient's condition has suddenly worsened. Please come see her for the last time."The calm I had barely regained was ripped open.I tore out the IV needle and staggered toward the emergency center.I found my mother lying alone on a bed in the corridor, with only an intern nurse beside her."Where is everyone?"I grabbed the nurse's hand."Where are the doctors? Why is no one here?"Fear kept exploding in my chest. How could there be no doctor in such a large hospital?Hadn't Leonard said he had assigned a medical team to my mother? The young nurse stammered."I heard Mr. Pitt's wife had an incident, so Mr. Pitt called all the doctors upstairs to examine her."My mind went blank.I instinctively called Leonard.I had no idea how many calls it took be
