Chapter 5

Author: Susan Wish
Perhaps sensing Michelle’s change in attitude, Sigmund began sticking close to her over the next few days, hardly letting her out of his sight.

To make up for what happened that night, he booked a candlelit dinner aboard a luxury cruise.

The dining hall was decorated in a refined, old style, and beyond the windows stretched the endless ocean.

Just as the waiter brought over flowers and wine, Emily appeared, looping her arm around Sigmund’s with a delighted smile.

“What a coincidence, Sigmund! You’re here too?”

Michelle’s expression froze for a moment.

There was no such thing as coincidence.

This had clearly been planned.

No wonder he had suddenly suggested dinner on a cruise. He’d only wanted a chance to run into Emily.

“Miss Lowe, would you mind if I joined you?”

Michelle didn’t even have the chance to refuse. Sigmund had already pulled out a chair for Emily, looking more than pleased to have her there.

When ordering, Emily laughed teasingly. “You ordered all my favorite dishes again. Aren’t you going to ask Miss Lowe what she likes?”

Sigmund pushed the menu toward Michelle with a gentle smile. “Take a look. See if there’s anything you want.”

She shook her head. “You decide.”

Dinner felt endless, every bite tasteless. Emily and Sigmund chatted easily, completely absorbed in each other, while Michelle sat there like an unwelcome guest.

Feeling suffocated, she got up and stepped outside, wandering into another part of the ship.

As she passed one of the private lounges, someone suddenly grabbed her and yanked her inside.

“You look familiar,” a man sneered. “Since you’re here, why don’t you join us for a drink?”

“Weren’t you the high-and-mighty Miss Lowe? Never took an invite before. Guess now that you’ve fallen, you don’t mind drinking with us after all.”

Michelle frowned. These men had been chasing her for a long time and still held a grudge for the humiliation she’d dealt them before.

“Sorry, I’m allergic to alcohol. I can’t drink.”

She tried to leave, but in the next moment they blocked the door.

A wave of fear rose in her chest and a chill ran down her back.

“Michelle, I’d advise you not to refuse a drink. No one’s protecting you now. What, don’t tell me you are relying on your sugar baby? Behave, and you’ll suffer less. Otherwise, don’t blame us for getting rough.”

When one of them lunged, Michelle’s breath caught and she kicked him hard between the legs.

She grabbed an ashtray to defend herself. “I warn you… Don’t touch me, or…”

“Or what? I don’t believe you can stop us.”

A fist struck Michelle across the face, making her head swim. She stumbled and couldn’t keep her balance.

They shoved her to the floor; her forehead slammed into the corner of a table and blood spurted out.

The sight of blood only excited them more. They whistled and forced alcohol into her mouth.

“I’ll devour you tonight. You used-up whore. Don’t act so damn innocent...”

Before he could finish his sentence, the private room door flew open.

Someone had kicked it in anger.

Sigmund saw the scene and his eyes went blood-red as he stormed in and punched one of the men hard in the face.

“How dare you touch my woman? You’re asking to die!”

He went wild, beating the man until he was covered in blood.

Then, with one last kick, Sigmund crushed the man’s face under his shoe, forcing him to kneel and apologize to Michelle.

Only when the others stepped in to pull him back did he finally relent, scooping the blood-soaked Michelle into his arms and rushing her out.

On the way to the hospital, he carefully wiped the blood from her forehead, his hands trembling. “I’m sorry. I never should’ve taken you there. This is all my fault.”

Michelle no longer knew how much of what he said was real or just another act.

She only knew that none of this had happened by coincidence.

Among those men, at least one had clearly recognized Sigmund.

Otherwise, they never would’ve backed off so easily.

Her eyes reddened as she asked softly, “You picked a fight with them for me. Aren’t you afraid they’ll come after you?”

Sigmund pressed his forehead to hers, his voice low and strained. “I’m not afraid. Nothing matters more than you.”

If she hadn’t already known he’d been lying to her all along, she might have been moved to tears by that line.

But sadly, every word out of his mouth felt hollow now.

The car was silent until his phone rang, shattering the moment.

The change in his expression was instant. His body went rigid, his face darkened.

“Michelle, can you go to the hospital by yourself?”

She froze, a bitter smile tugging at her lips.

He pulled the car to the side of the road and hurried out. His figure grew smaller in the rearview mirror until it vanished completely.

Only then did Michelle start to laugh—softly at first, then through tears she couldn’t stop.

She remembered the voice she’d heard through the phone just moments ago.

“Sigmund, Emily’s in trouble. Please hurry back.”

Since the day Nathan confessed his feelings so unexpectedly, Michelle’s attitude toward their marriage had shifted completely.Nathan had saved her twice—five years ago and again five years later—both times in almost identical circumstances. Each time, it was his help that allowed her to survive unscathed. So, she felt she had no right to complain. She had been the one in the wrong first. Whatever he did to her now, she could only accept it as what she owed him.Nathan brought Michelle back to the Shaw estate, personally introducing her to his family and publicly declaring her as his wife. She could see the discontent in their eyes, though none of them dared to voice it.Later, he officially announced their marriage to the public, taking her to events and gatherings with open pride. People called them a perfect match, an affectionate couple. Michelle played her role as a devoted wife so convincingly that, at times, she couldn’t tell whether it was still an act or if some part of

Michelle’s body began to tremble uncontrollably. It had been five years, and she’d buried that memory deep, refusing to face it. If possible, she wished Nathan would never find out. She’d rather he go on hating her forever.“You think secretly returning the 5 million makes it as if it never happened?”Nathan had known the truth all along, just not soon enough. He thought back to half a year ago, when his mother had been on her deathbed. She’d called him to her side, her mind already clouded with illness, yet she still remembered clearly the day she’d driven Michelle away.“All these years, you’ve been alone. Whenever marriage is brought up, you always say there’s no rush. “But I know that you’ve never stopped thinking about her. Nathan, I’ve never understood what’s so special about that woman that you can’t let her go.”Nathan had fallen silent in front of his mother. It was that day that he finally learned the truth behind their breakup.“The Lowes were in trouble back then, and h

“And what about you? We were together for three years… You lied to me for three years. Do you think you have the right to call me heartless?”Michelle’s voice was so calm, so void of emotion, that it made Sigmund’s hope slowly crumble. She used to trust him no matter what he did, always saying that even if he made mistakes, she would forgive him.But now, all of that felt impossibly distant. He had torn apart with his own hands the affection she once reserved for him alone.Michelle told Nathan to get in the car first, then turned to Sigmund, her face expressionless.“Sigmund, I thought I made myself clear last night. What makes you think I can’t let you go? Where does that confidence come from?“When you lied about taking part-time jobs just to spend time with Emily, when you pretended to be poor and ignored my family’s struggles, when your so-called friends mocked me in front of you, and when you secretly proposed to her, you managed to lie without a shred of guilt. “Don’t pretend y

Michelle was exhausted, too drained to waste another word. The moment she stepped through the door, Nathan caught her wrist and shoved her against the wall.“I didn’t expect you to turn so wild after we broke up. Keeping men and playing replacement games—who was he supposed to be a stand-in for?”Her chest tightened, his piercing gaze making her uneasy. She blurted out, “Anyone but you.”“Did I say it was me? What are you so guilty about?”Nathan’s fingers slid along her waist, tightening with a force that left no room for protest.“Your taste in men has really gone downhill. You spent three years in his bed, and all you got was abandonment when things went wrong?“You got played by a man for three years, Michelle, when did you become this stupid?”Feeling humiliated and furious, she shoved at him, but he grabbed her and slung her over his shoulder, carrying her upstairs before tossing her onto the bed.His presence surrounded her instantly.Tonight, Nathan’s kiss was rough, almost pun

Every time she saw someone bully him, she wanted to fight for him without hesitation. It was true that at first, Michelle might have chosen him out of her own motives. But those three years together had been sincere. At the very least, she had never once wronged him.Even when he gave her cheap gifts, she cherished them carefully, thinking he didn’t have much money and that spending it on her was proof of his love. But after Emily came back, everything changed. The Sigmund she once knew vanished completely. The cold wind brushed across Michelle’s cheeks as her mind slowly cleared.Looking at Sigmund’s face, twisted in pain, she let out a mocking smile.“Sigmund, you knew I came looking for y

“Michelle…”When Sigmund saw her, his eyes turned red. He rushed forward and grabbed her arm, his palm so hot it almost burned her skin.“I finally found you. They said you married into the Shaw family, but when I went looking for you, they wouldn’t let me in. Luckily, I ran into you here.”The joy of finding her again made Sigmund refuse to let go. Along the way, he’d sworn to himself that once he saw her, he would apologize, beg for forgiveness, and never let her leave him again. But when he noticed the diamond ring on her finger, his eyes darkened with rage.Reason drowned beneath a wave of panic.“Other than the ring I gave you, you’re not allowed to wear anyone else’s.”He tried to yank it off her finger, but Michelle, dizzy and groggy from the alcohol, felt her head splitting. She threw off his hand instinctively and tried to run, only to turn around and crash straight into Nathan.Nathan caught her with one arm, his cold gaze landing on Sigmund.“If my wife won’t wear the rin
