Charlene slowly turned the knob to her mother’s bedroom door. Please, Lord, let her be asleep.

Tiptoeing forward, every floorboard beneath her feet seemed to betray her. Crick. Crick. Crick.

“Oh my goodness,” she whispered, her eyes wide with anxiety.

Snap!

A sudden silence swallowed the room. No creaks. No whispers. There is no sound at all. Charlene froze, her back straightening in alarm. What just happened?

The air felt thick, as if something unseen hovered in the room with her. Her breath caught in her throat. She stepped back, then, with a sudden shiver, realized she wasn’t alone.

ReNew’s voice echoed in her mind—a calm voice - yet filled with urgency. "Quickly—remove the charm from around your mother’s neck. Be careful not to wake her. We need her to recover her memories."

Charlene nodded instinctively, her movements becoming more deliberate. She crossed the room with gentle, cautious steps. Yet every inch she took seemed to push her back, as though an invisible force was repelling her, pulling her away from her mother. She tried again—closer this time—but it felt like an unseen hand was forcing her to retreat.

"ReNew!" she thought aloud, frustration tinging her voice. "What is happening? I can’t move."

ReNew paused for a long moment, the weight of the situation settling in. Then, a cool response, "I know. I feel it, too. Let me think..."

Charlene watched as ReNew closed their eyes in deep concentration. A soft glow filled the room, and suddenly, an x-ray-like vision appeared before them. A swirling, pulsating wave radiated from her mother’s neck, encasing the charm in a protective bubble.

"The charm is protecting itself," ReNew explained in a steady tone. "We need to break through it, but we must get closer."

Charlene’s heart raced. "How? How do we do that?" she thought desperately.

"Fight power with power, Charlene. We have no other choice."

The words struck her like a thunderclap. Power against power… She took a deep breath. "But how do I use the spear? I’ve never done this before."

ReNew’s voice became reassuring. "You’ve already done it once. Think of what you need—what you want. Say it, and it will be."

Charlene blinked in confusion. "That’s it? It’s that simple?"

"Yes. But be cautious. Don’t wake your mother."

She swallowed hard, the weight of the moment pressing on her. With trembling fingers, she touched the spear lightly. In a breathless whisper, she said, "Scissors."

To her surprise, a pair of gleaming steel scissors appeared, floating effortlessly in the air before her.

"I see where you’re going with this." ReNew’s voice was approving. "Let me help you."

Charlene adjusted her stance, her hands now gripping the floating scissors. She closed her eyes, taking a deep breath as she visualized the motion she needed. Her hands began to move in a rhythm—slow and controlled—just as the ocean waves she used to watch crashing on distant shores. She could feel the scissors pressing against the invisible force, slowly making progress as she rocked her hands back and forth.

"Try an alligator’s bite—slow and steady," ReNew instructed.

Charlene visualized an alligator’s powerful jaws snapping shut, and with a sharp movement, the scissors bit into the charm’s protective barrier, cutting through it inch by inch.

Snap!

The charm’s chain finally broke in two. The heavy pendant dropped softly beside her mother’s neck, and the room seemed to breathe again, as if the air itself had been released from a tension-filled grip.

"You did it!" ReNew exclaimed, relief flooding their voice.

Charlene’s chest rose and fell with heavy breaths. She turned, about to leave the room, when—

A shimmer, faint at first, began to take form in the corner of her eye. It was a figure.

The form clapped.

But there was no sound.

It clapped again.

Silence.

It wasn’t until the figure grinned that Charlene realized what was happening. The sound was being suppressed. With a snap of the figure’s fingers, the sound returned.

Clap. Clap. Clap.

Charlene’s heart skipped a beat. She whirled around to face the intruder, her pulse pounding. “Who are you?” she demanded. “What are you doing in here?”

The figure smirked, its face cloaked in shadow. "I’m just here to give your mother her thirty pieces of silver."

With a swift motion, the figure conjured a small bag of coins and tossed it high into the air, sending it spiraling down toward her mother.

Tamara’s eyes fluttered open, the sound of the bag landing on her chest rousing her from a deep sleep.

“Ow,” she groaned, blinking in confusion. Slowly, she sat up, disoriented, eyes landing on the strange form at the foot of her bed.

Her gaze locked onto Charlene with a flicker of recognition. “Charlene—what are you doing here? What is this?”

Charlene’s stomach turned. Her mother’s voice, usually so comforting, was now full of fear.

“Mom?” she said softly.

But Tamara didn’t respond. Instead, she jumped out of bed and rushed toward the foot of the bed, positioning herself between Charlene and the figure. The silver coins scattered across the floor, rolling in every direction.

“Tamara, why are you so upset?” the figure asked with feigned sympathy. “I’m here to reward you for a job well done. A life for a life, remember?”

The words struck Charlene like an icy wind.

The figure’s gaze shifted to her. “Your mother traded you… for her beloved Seth.”

Charlene’s chest tightened, the sting of betrayal sharp and bitter.

“Yes… that’s it,” the figure cooed, watching her closely. “You understand now. Your mother betrayed you. She chose him over you.”

Tamara’s face twisted with anguish as she clenched her fists. Without warning, she lunged forward, grabbing the broken necklace chain and wrapping it tightly around the figure’s throat.

With a desperate scream, she squeezed, choking the life from the creature.

"Go!" she cried out in agony. "Go to the realm! Help your father! You’re the only one who can!"

"Mom, no! Please come with me!" Charlene begged.

"I can’t," Tamara’s voice cracked. “Only the dead—or those about to face the final judgment—can enter. I’ll hold it off as long as I can. I love you, baby. Now go!"

Tears flooded Charlene’s eyes, but she didn’t hesitate. She looked toward ReNew. “You heard her. Let’s go.”

Taking a deep breath, Charlene leaped into the swirling portal that had opened before her.

The last thing she saw was her mother’s face, etched with love and sorrow, as the portal closed behind her.

The darkness enveloped Charlene. It swallowed her whole, the void stretching endlessly before her. She felt weightless, as if suspended in time.

Fear gnawed at her. “What’s going to happen to me? What’s going to happen to ReNew?”

Her mother’s voice echoed in her mind, desperate and determined: “Find your father. Help him. Only you can save him now!”

Charlene gritted her teeth, forcing herself to push past the fear.

“I’m coming, Dad,” she whispered fiercely. “I’m coming to save you.”

  • Beyond Fate   early rising

Chapter: Early RisingThe morning air was still thick with dew when Seth and Charlene wrapped up their early workout. ReNew and Heth arrived shortly after, just in time for an unplanned mission—one that involved family and, hopefully, breakfast.“It’s really early,” Charlene grumbled, rubbing her arms. “The first orb is barely even in the sky.”As if on cue, a rooster crowed loudly in the distance.ReNew winced. “Are we seriously doing this? Should we be here? I mean… last time we just showed up, remember?” She leaned in closer. “Are we trying to get shot?”Seth chuckled, unbothered. “They’re not that bad, girls. This is a working farm—they’ve probably been up for hours.”“Doing what, exactly?” ReNew asked, eyeing the quiet barn suspiciously. The girls and Heth started strolling toward the house.“Where are you going?” Seth asked, confused.“To get breakfast, of course,” Charlene answered flatly, brows furrowed.“I said they’re working. On the farm,” Seth said, pointing toward the lar

  • Beyond Fate   she's not in the mood!

She wasn’t in the mood to talk. Not today. ReNew had stayed locked away in her room, silent and simmering. But Charlene? She showed up, just like she promised—ready to meet her dad.Seth was already waiting for her, seated at the edge of the glowing lagoon inside the cave. His shirt was off, revealing the tight muscle cords across his back, and he hummed softly while stretching, legs spread on the mat beneath him. He didn’t turn when she approached.“Join me,” he said simply, patting the mat beside him.Charlene sat down, unsure of what they were doing, but willing to follow. She tilted her head as she watched.“Do what I’m doing,” Seth said calmly. “Breathe slowly and steadily. Inhale deep… now exhale. Good. This helps oxygenate your muscles and prevents them from cramping.”She mirrored his movements, mimicking his slow stretches.“Stretching,” he continued, “isn't just about flexibility. It’s about control. Grace. Power. Exhale as you deepen into the stretch. Hold it for at least t

Seth looked at her with a storm of concern flashing across his face."CHARLENE, WHAT DID YOU DO?" he demanded. She froze, caught off guard by his tone. “I taught him a lesson. That’s all!” she said, a little too defensively.Seth’s eyes scanned her—sharp, observant. Then he noticed it. Her soul—ReNew—wasn’t with her. That might explain it. ReNew had been in the cave ever since they’d left his parents’ house.“Tell me you didn’t kill him!” Seth choked out, his voice cracking. He gripped the broken necklace in his hand like it was a lifeline. “Tell me you didn’t do something irreversible just to get this stone. Answer me, Princess. Please!”“Dad, seriously? The plan was to get them to give us the hidden place stones, remember?” Charlene replied. “So we could understand what he’s up to and what their return really means. And I did just that.”Seth looked like he’d aged ten years in a second. “I understand the assignment,” he said, “but Charlene—answer me, please.”She waved him off, tryi

  • Beyond Fate   After dinner

Beth waved to everyone as they exited the house through the glowing portal. Odo lingered, reaching out slowly—almost reverently—to touch the shimmering edge before it could close, trying to trace its exit path. But just as Charlene stepped out on the other side, she felt it—an energy signature, subtle but familiar. Fate magic. Someone had tried to follow them.Without hesitation, she turned and slammed her hand into the closing portal, scrambling the pathways mid-closure. Her instincts screamed one name. She reached into the spiritual tangle and yanked. Before Seth could react, Charlene vanished. The portal snapped shut.“Princess!” he called out, panic thick in his voice.Meanwhile, deep inside Charlene’s mind’s eye, Odo found himself strapped to a chair in a void of darkness.“What… what is this?” he muttered, blinking against the sudden beam of light that pierced the shadows and hit him in the face.Charlene stepped out of the dark, cloaked in authority. Her voice was disguised—dee

Issa walked over to Charlene, his hands in his pockets, casual but hopeful."Is this seat taken?"ReNew, already lounging beside Charlene, patted the cushion next to her. "Nope. Have a seat!" She slid over, clearly trying to give them space. But Charlene wasn’t letting her escape that easily."ReNew, where are you going?" she hissed, grabbing her by the arm."I’m moving so your crush can sit down," ReNew said through a grin, whispering through her teeth. Her eyes practically screamed play it cool. Charlene narrowed hers in response but let her go.Issa chuckled softly and sat down, flashing his usual sunny smile. Charlene turned red.He seemed so relaxed, so cheerful. Could he have really forgiven her already?"A little birdie told me someone’s got a birthday coming up in a couple of weeks," Issa said.Charlene blinked. "That’s right..." She’d completely forgotten with everything going on. Her seventeenth birthday. Back on Earth, they never made a big deal out of it—no parties, no fri

“Will you all be staying for dinner?” Beth asked warmly, her eyes resting on Seth first, then drifting to each Fate who had entered her home. She smiled, radiating a rare joy, waiting patiently for their response.Charlene, donning a matching apron with her grandmother, stood beside her with a hopeful grin, bouncing slightly on her toes. She glanced from Seth to her grandma, silently pleading for the answer she wanted to hear. They all knew what she wanted—especially Seth.Charlene couldn’t contain herself any longer. She began tugging at her father’s sleeve with all the charm of a child trying to win a trip to the candy store. To Charlene, this moment was magical. To Seth, it was complicated. Beth was kind, gentle—but also passive. Her refusal to stand up to Odo had led to a childhood Seth would never forget… or forgive. Still, he wouldn’t bring up the past in front of everyone. He’d remain courteous, calm. Polite. Because that’s what was expected. But inside? Inside, he burned with

Seth and Odo continued to argue, oblivious to the silent audience gathering nearby. Destiny sat on a bale of hay just outside the red barn, her posture relaxed but her eyes sharp. She'd been there the whole time, watching. High above, two black crows swooped down, landing beside her. They shimmered as they touched the ground, transforming into Heth and ReNew in their humanoid forms."How long can they go at this?" ReNew asked, crossing her arms with a smirk."I guess until one of them runs out of steam," Heth said, not even flinching as a loud grunt echoed from inside."Or until they kill each other," Destiny added dryly. She shook her head. No one moved to stop the brawl—perhaps everyone agreed the two men needed to let this tension burn itself out.Suddenly, Seth lunged at his father. His fist flew toward Odo’s face, but the older man sidestepped just enough to avoid the brunt of the blow. He retaliated quickly with a punch to Seth’s ribs, knocking the wind out of him. Seth gasped b

  • Beyond Fate   you are truly a disappointment

Heth and ReNew perched silently atop the red barn, cloaked in the form of two ominous black crows. The realm’s twilight skies gave their feathers a sleek, unnatural sheen. Both of their minds were tethered—interlocked with Seth and Charlene's thoughts. Every word spoken, every flicker of emotion, they absorbed in perfect synchronization.“It looks clear from up here,” ReNew murmured telepathically.Heth gave a sharp nod. “Too clear. Like a trap waiting to spring.”Farmland stretched as far as their enchanted eyes could see. Crops swayed softly in the wind. Chickens strutted freely, cows grazed lazily, a rooster crowed proudly from atop a wooden fence. Pigs wallowed in the mud while a pair of horses trotted playfully near a fenced boundary. Off in the distance, a still pond reflected the darkening sky, flanked by ducks and geese floating serenely.“This place looks like a postcard from Earth,” ReNew said, her voice laced with suspicion. “No Realm architecture. No energy walls. No float

  • Beyond Fate   everyone's on edge

Everyone who mattered was in the war.Destiny made a point to be dressed to impress—not out of vanity, but to remind everyone watching that she was still sovereign, still standing, still golden. She was the First Spear, born of sacrifice and fire, and tonight, she shone like a sun that refused to set. Her gown, woven from pure gold, hugged her figure like liquid light. The fabric danced with the flames of countless battles she’d survived. Her crown was not perched but intertwined with the thick waves of her dark black hair, blending regal poise with divine authority. Her sun-kissed skin glowed, as though the heavens themselves still clung to her presence. To her left stood Seth, wearing royal blue robes streaked with polished lines of gold, his expression resolute. To her right was Charlene, equally resplendent, matching his attire but adding her own fire to the air—an unspoken promise of youth, power, and mystery yet to unfold.Behind them, others stood at attention, all dressed with
