The atmosphere buzzed with the chatter of hopeful candidates, but my attention was drawn to Isabella and Mike, who were mocking each other as they exchanged playful banter. I could hear Mike’s teasing voice behind me. “Come on, give your boyfriend a kiss,” he said, dripping with sarcasm.

“Get lost,” Isabella snapped back, her tone sharp. Their dynamic was fascinating and I couldn't help but wonder what their relationship was really like. As I pondered this, my thoughts drifted to Alex.I realized I didn’t even have his number. He hadn’t asked for mine and I certainly hadn’t offered it. I was waiting for him to make the first move; I wouldn’t initiate.

Suddenly, a deep voice broke through my thoughts. “Hey, ma’am.” I looked up to see one of Isabella’s bodyguards standing in front of me, his presence imposing yet professional.

“How can I help you?” I asked, trying to sound more confident than I felt.

He handed me a piece of paper and I looked at hi

Miss Maya,” he said softly, his eyes grave, “could we speak in private?”My gaze darted past him.And there she was.Mum—so still, so pale. A mask covered her nose and mouth. Machines beeped beside her like a countdown to some unseen end. Her chest rose and fell, but it wasn’t enough. Not when she didn’t stir. Not when she didn’t know I was there. My knees buckled. I barely nodded before following the doctor into his office, my heart pounding like a war drum in my chest.“She’s stable now,” he began gently as I sank numbly into the chair across from him.I exhaled a breath I hadn’t realized I was holding. “Thank God… but what happened? Why is she like this?”He hesitated. And that hesitation alone nearly shattered me.“Your mother was injected with an unusually high dose of scopolamine,” he said carefully. “It’s a powerful drug. In such large amounts, it can mimic Alzheimer’s symptoms. It blocks receptors in the brain—affecting memory, perception, and cognition.”I stared at him. His

A wave of dread washed over me. I sprinted closer, seeing Mom standing outside the door, tears streaming down her face. “What’s happening?” I cried, gripping the arm of a doctor sprinting by.“There’s no time to explain,” he said tersely before disappearing into the room.I rushed to Mom, kneeling beside her. “Mom, talk to me! What happened?” I shook her gently, but her expression was frozen, tears falling without a word.“Mom, please! What’s going on?” My voice trembled with fear, the tightness in my chest growing unbearable.“Maya—” Christi said, returning with takeout in her hands, her face paling at the sight of Mom’s distress.“Christi, I don’t know what’s happening! I just came back and saw Mom outside. The doctors are with Dad, and nobody will tell me what’s going on!” I sobbed, my heart racing. She dropped the food, moving closer to me. “It’s okay, Maya,” she whispered, wrapping her arms around me.“Mom, what happened? I thought Dad was fine just moments ago!” I pleaded, but

I decided to check the news, and a headline caught my attention: “Face of Queenk.” Clicking on it made my heart race, and I was shocked by the image that appeared. Wait, isn’t this the same girl who led me to the pool? My thoughts raced—so Alex was right; she was involved and had been sent by Isabella. But how did they know I couldn’t swim? Aside from my family and Maimai, I hadn’t told anyone. How could they possibly have found out?A flurry of questions filled my mind, but I set them aside, resolved to uncover the truth. I would be reaching out to Isabella soon. I made the decision to call Maimai.“Maya, you had me worried!” she exclaimed as soon as I answered the call. I had to pull the phone away from my ear, bracing myself for the intensity of her concern.“Sorry, I’m caught up in all this,” I responded, feeling a wave of regret. She sighed, relief evident in her voice. “I’m just glad you’re okay. How is Dad?” “He’s stable. I just spoke with the doctor; the surgery is scheduled

  • Beyond The Surface    Chapter 36 The Turmoil Inside

**Alex's POV**Damn, I cursed under my breath as I watched the car drive away. That was too close, I pulled the hoodie from my head, trying to catch a glimpse of her face as the vehicle disappeared into the distance. My heart pounded in my chest as I stepped out of the car. I had planned to stay hidden, to watch from afar but the urge to see her overwhelmed me. Disguising myself was a pitiful attempt to avoid recognition and before I knew it, I was walking in her direction but lost in my thoughts, I barely noticed her until we collided.Time froze for a moment. My breath hitched as our eyes met—hers were wide with surprise and I was instantly transported back to every memory we shared. Seeing her again was supposed to bring clarity but instead, it muddled everything further. I wanted to reach out, to embrace her and whisper everything I hadn’t said, but the words caught in my throat. She looked fragile, as if the world was pressing down on her. My heart ached at the sight. What could

“Christi, you’re back,” I said softly, stepping closer. She turned her head toward me and managed a small smile. “Yeah. I couldn’t stay away for long.” At least she looked better than when I first saw her. I let out a breath I hadn’t even realized I was holding. Mom was sitting near the window, slowly eating from a small bowl. That was a relief. She hadn’t eaten much since we got to the hospital, and I’d been worried. “Mom, you should eat more,” I said, pulling up a chair beside her. She gave me a tired smile. “I’m fine, Maya.” Christi got up and walked over to the table where a food flask sat. She opened it, served some porridge onto plate, and handed it to me. “Here, eat,” she said. I hesitated for a moment before taking it. “Thanks, Christi.” We sat in silence as we ate, the only sounds being the occasional scrape of the spoon against the plate. Every now and then, my eyes drifted

***Alex POV***I stared at my phone, my grip tightening as I replayed the sound of her voice in my head. She had tried to hide it, but I heard it,the tremble, the unshed tears clinging to her words. Maya was barely holding it together.A heavy sigh escaped me and I ran a hand over my face, leaning back against the cool metal of the gym’s weight rack. I shouldn’t have called her. Not now. Not when I knew hearing her like that would wreck me.But the second Carter told me about her dad about how critical his condition was,i couldn’t hold back anymore.I had to hear her voice.Even if all I got to say was a simple “Are you okay?” Even if she didn’t break down and let me comfort her like I wanted to.I just needed to be there, even if it was from a distance.I exhaled sharply, tossing my phone onto the nearest bench.“You good?” Adrian’s voice cut through my thoughts.I didn’t answer right away. Instead, I bent down, grabbed the weights at my feet, and pushed through a few reps. Maybe if

I exhaled slowly, nodding. "It’s a relief that a perfect match was finally found,” he added. I swallowed hard, my emotions threatening to overwhelm me. “That’s true,” I murmured. we’ve been searching for a compatible heart for so long. Dad was diagnosed with heart failure three years ago, but we only found out last year. He hid it from us, and when Mom discovered the truth, she was devastated. I was angry too, angry that he kept something so serious from us but later, I understood. He didn’t want us to worry. Since then, Mom had been relentless in making sure he took his medication, never letting him do anything physically demanding. Dad loved raising horses, but she wouldn’t even let him near the stables anymore. She was trying to keep him safe, following the doctor’s orders to the letter. I inhaled deeply, forcing myself to stay strong. For them. “Thank you, Doctor,” I said, stretching out my hand for a handshake. “You’re welcome,” he replied, shaking my hand firmly

A young doctor entered, followed by two nurses. His presence commanded the room, his white coat pristine, a clipboard in his hand. “Good afternoon, everyone," He greeted as he approached my father’s bed. I stepped aside as he checked Dad’s vitals, scribbling something onto his clipboard before whispering to one of the nurses. She nodded and quickly left the room. Then, he turned to us. “We’ve found a match for the heart transplant,” he announced. For a moment, my mind went blank. “The organ will be transported Freya".he continued, looking between me and my mother. A choked sob escaped my lips. Relief flooded through me so suddenly that my knees nearly buckled. Mom covered her mouth, her body shaking as fresh tears spilled down her face. “Oh, thank God…” “We just need you to sign the necessary documents and the heart will be on its way immediately,” the doctor said. I nodded quickly. “I’ll do it.” ***Alex’s POV*** “Dad, not yet. Just give me some time.” I tri

Maya’s POVThe drive to the hospital felt like eternity, although in reality, it took less than twenty minutes. The road was smooth, the car’s tires gliding over the pavement, yet my heart felt like it was dragging across jagged stones. I knew this hospital ‘WHITLOCKS’ it is one of the best in Freya. My father had donated to this hospital countless times, yet now he lay inside, not as a benefactor, but as a patient fighting for his life.As soon as the car pulled up at the entrance, I turned to Christi. Her face was pale, her eyes hollow, the dark circles under them a cruel reminder of the sleepless night she had spent crying. I knew she needed rest, even though she stubbornly refused to leave.“Christi, you need to go home and get some sleep,” I said softly, squeezing her cold hand. She shook her head immediately. “No. Don’t send me home, Maya. I want to stay".I took a deep breath, choosing my words carefully. “I need you to do something important for me. Mom and I will need food w
