Chapter 4

مؤلف: Cat Eat Fish
I staggered back a few steps, and my cheek burned with pain.

Tears streamed down Mom's face as she wailed, "Vivian did go too far this time, but you can't just stand by and watch our family go down! All the guests are waiting for the bride right now!"

My face turned ashen. In the end, I forced out a few words through gritted teeth. "I'm not getting married!"

No matter how they tried to persuade me, or even when they put their hands on me, I refused to give in. I grabbed a fruit knife and pressed it against my own neck. My eyes were red as I snarled, "If anyone tries to force me into this, I'll just kill myself!"

The moment I said that, everyone in the room froze. I didn't know if they were afraid that I would truly end my life, or if they just didn't want the trouble of having a dead body on their hands.

Either way, I didn't care anymore. I'd already graduated. Once I found a job, I would finally have my freedom.

We were at a stalemate. In the end, it was Adrian who suggested talking to me alone. Everyone else cleared out, leaving just the two of us in the dressing room.

Half an hour later, the dressing room door opened. I had changed into the wedding gown and placed my hand on Adrian's arm. My face was devoid of emotion. Then, I pasted the ugliest smile ever on my face and went through the entire wedding ceremony.

My thoughts snapped back to the present. I stood in front of the floor-to-ceiling windows, looking down at the stories below. The position I held was one I'd clawed and scraped my way up to over the past ten years.

A chill ran through me, and suddenly a pair of arms wrapped around me from behind. I jumped, but the familiar sandalwood scent that wafted into my nose made me relax.

"Penny for your thoughts? You didn't even notice when I came in," Adrian said. His lips were at my ear, and his voice was magnetic.

I smiled faintly. "I was thinking about tomorrow's investment conference."

He held my shoulders and turned me around to face him. "I have faith in you. Everyone has seen what you're capable of."

The corners of my lips lifted as I asked, "What brings you here? Isn't it busy at headquarters?"

"There wasn't much to do today, so I came to pick you up from work. I also wanted to tell you that Rowan wants to see that new movie tomorrow."

I nodded absent-mindedly.

Adrian dipped his head and brushed a kiss against my lips. I gave him a sweet smile in return.

When we got home that night, I didn't see any sign of Vivian anywhere. She was being a little too quiet. I figured Mom and Dad were probably keeping her at home to protect their company's interests.

For the past few days, I had been constantly exhausted, both physically and mentally. And so, the moment my head hit the pillow that night, I was out cold.

Sometime in the middle of the night, I felt a strong arm wrap around me and pull me into a warm embrace. I let out a few sleepy murmurs of protest, but my eyelids were so heavy that I couldn't open them.

The next day, the investment conference was in full swing. Power players mingled, clinking glasses and trading business cards. I worked the room, smiling, toasting, and making small talk. When I finally managed to steal a brief moment of rest, I slipped into the lounge backstage.

Rowan was sitting obediently on the couch, waiting for me. The moment he saw me, his eyes lit up.

"Mommy, after this is over, will we still go to the movies?" he asked.

I gave him an indulgent smile and gently tapped his nose. "Of course. Have your dad and I ever broken a promise to you?"

My answer sent him into a fit of happy giggles.

Seeing Rowan steadied me a little. Ever since the conference began, I'd had this constant, gnawing sense that something was about to go wrong.

I took a deep breath and left the lounge. Back in the ballroom, my gaze landed on a familiar figure, and my body went rigid.

Not far from me, Vivian was holding onto Adrian and saying something to him. His back was to me, so I couldn't see his expression.

A second later, she spotted me. She pointed at me and screamed, "I'm your actual wife! She's the shameless one who stole you and our son from me!"

In an instant, all eyes in the room turned on me.

Mom and Dad's faces were full of despair as their bodies slid off the chairs and onto the floor. Clinging to her last shred of hope, Mom asked anxiously, "What about the baby?"The doctor hesitated for a moment before saying, "The mother's lifestyle during pregnancy was… less than ideal, so the baby isn't in very good condition."He was afraid Mom and Dad wouldn't be able to handle the truth, so he chose his words carefully. Just then, a nurse came out with the baby in her arms.It was a premature infant that weighed less than three pounds and had wrinkled skin. It looked like a tiny kitten. Meanwhile, in the delivery room, Vivian was screaming in agony. Her voice was hoarse from the pain. She was on the brink. The doctors and nurses pushed a mobile bed out of the delivery room. Marie's face was ice-cold, and the pressure she gave off was suffocating. The moment Vivian saw her, it was like spotting a savior. She completely forgot about Rowan and hurried over to Marie, saying urgently, "Mrs. Sutton Senior, I'm Vivian Cavendish. Do you remember me? I was engaged to Adrian. I'm his real wife!"I couldn't help frowning when I saw her like this. Something about her just felt off. She seemed to be a little too… extreme.Marie's voice cut through my thoughts. "Vivian Cavendish? The name does ring a bell. You're my daughter-in-law's older sister, right?"Her tone wasn't too harsh, but Vivian froze the second she heard that. "No… Adrian and I were dating back then, and we—"Before she could finish, Marie abruptly cut her off. "That's enough. Adrian and Noelle have always been a loving couple. The Sutton family doesn't need another daughter-in-law."Her stance couldn't be clearer.Vivian collapsed weakly to the floor. Most of the Sutton family's businesses were

The footage showed Rowan sitting on the couch, quietly waiting for me. Suddenly, the lounge door opened. He saw something, then got up and walked out."It's Vivian!" I practically roared. My nails dug deep into my palms. "It must've been her. She waited until everyone was out front and then had someone take Rowan away!"Adrian's face went terrifyingly dark, but he still tried to calm me down. "Don't worry. Vivian wouldn't dare do anything to him."With that, he dialed a number and said icily, "Liam, get over to the Cavendish residence. I want to know where Vivian is right now!"The entire investment conference spiraled into chaos over this sudden turn of events, but Adrian quickly took charge. Part of the team stayed behind to keep things under control, and to the public, they only said that a child had suddenly fallen ill and had been rushed to the hospital.Meanwhile, we brought a group of people with us and drove straight to the Cavendish residence. In the car, my hands were c

Adrian's presence dropped to freezing in an instant. His dangerous gaze locked onto the tears shimmering in Vivian's eyes. He didn't say a word. After a moment, a few security guards rushed over in a panic. The head of security was drenched in sweat, and he said nervously, "I'm very sorry, Mr. Sutton. This was an oversight on our part. This woman said she knew Mrs. Sutton, so we let her in."Vivian's eyes were full of alarm. "What are you trying to do? I'm Rowan Sutton's biological mother! I'm related to the Suttons by blood!"I snapped coldly, "This is an investment conference. Do you even have an invitation?"My sudden question made her freeze on the spot. I let out a cold laugh at that. "You don't even have an invitation, and you're here kicking up a fuss. Security, take her out of here!"My tone was righteous and unyielding. There were just too many reporters here today. No matter what, I had to protect the Sutton family's reputation. There was simply too much at stake.I wat

It felt like someone had pressed pause on the noise in the ballroom. All the chatter and the clinking of glasses cut off in an instant. Countless eyes snapped to me, like a spotlight was being trained on me.I caught familiar business partners staring at me, as shock and doubt flashed across their faces. My own employees also whispered among themselves.Even worse, the press covering the investment conference had already turned their cameras on me. Every tiny twitch of my expression was about to be magnified and dissected.I felt the blood rush to my head, only to turn ice-cold a heartbeat later. A chill crept over me all the way to my fingertips and toes.Vivian stood beside Adrian, looking pitiful and wronged, as if she'd been utterly betrayed. She clutched his arm in a death grip. Her voice was shaky with tears, but it was still loud enough for everyone to hear."Adrian, tell them! Tell everyone that we're in love with each other! I just panicked back then because I wasn't read
