The door comes off its hinges less than two minutes after the system’s warning.

I watch it fall from inside a pocket of the world that does not exist. The system has opened a gray window in the corner of my vision, a live feed of room nine, and the picture is sharp enough to count the scuffs on Garrick's boots.

He stands in the doorway with his claws out and his chest heaving. Six wolves crowd the hallway behind him. The room is empty. Its bed is bolted to the floor, and its window is painted shut. My chair lies on its side beside the handle, still in one piece.

"She was here." Garrick sniffs the air, jaw working. "The chain is still on. The chair was under the handle. Nobody walked out of this room."

"Then where is she?" The beta behind him sounds ready to throw up.

"Check the bathroom, the vents, the ceiling." Garrick kicks the mattress across the floor. "Alpha Cross will skin every one of us if that blood-bag stays loose. Tear it all apart."

They did. The plaster caves, the television hits a wall, and the clerk hovers in the corridor with his hands raised, adding up the damage in dollars. I sit at the edge of the spring and watch my hunters wreck a room that holds nothing of mine.

   Then something occured to me.

How did they find me?

Rain washed my scent away. My phone lies at the bottom of a river. Nobody followed me through that culvert.

I pull off my right boot. The heel is thick, thicker than a heel should be, and I have never questioned it because Brandon bought these boots himself. I dig my thumbnail into the seam. The rubber peels back like a lid.

A silver disc the size of a pea sits in the hollow, blinking green. The system marks it as an active beacon. I remove it, wrap it in the damp sock from my pocket, and keep it separate from the brass key and my mother’s hidden ID.

My mouth goes dry. I wore these boots for six years, and for every day of them he knew each step I took, every wall I leaned on, every night I cried in the laundry room. Back then I called it being looked after.

My rage comes back, and it is calm. I check the left boot next, and my fingers stop. Behind the lining, stitched into the heel by a fourteen year old with a sewing needle and a stolen thread, are two things Brandon never found. One is a small brass key stamped 417. The other is a laminated state ID with my real birthday.

My mother pressed that key into my hand a week before the fire. Keep it where no one would find it, she said.

I kept it where no one could find it.

Six hours pass in the grass, and I wake to gold light from a sky with no sun. At 3:12 AM outside time, the feed shows Garrick's men gone and one guard dozing in a van. The system offers exit points within five hundred meters of where I entered. I pick the alley behind the laundromat.

A garbage truck rumbles past at 3:40. I slip the tracker under its rear bumper and watch it roll north, blinking its little green light. The system confirms the beacon is moving away from me. It does not promise the pack will stop searching; it only means their easiest trail is gone.

"Let them chase the trash," I say, and head for the Portland district.

Pacific Trust Bank sits in the Portland financial district like a gray tooth, all marble and brass. I walk through the revolving doors at 9:01 AM in a borrowed hoodie, with wet hair and a face that has not slept properly for a very long time.

Behind the glass sits a female teller, young and polished, who does not smile. "How can I help you?"

"Safe deposit box 417." I slide the ID and the brass key under the glass. "Vespera Vane."

Her fingers stop on the keyboard.

She types something. Then the experssion on her face changes, and she reaches for a phone without breaking eye contact. "One moment, Miss Vane. I need to get my manager."

Hands flat on the counter, I keep still while my left wrist itches where the pack mark used to be.

A man in a navy suit hurries out of a back office, gray-haired and nervous, his name tag reading ALDER. He studies the ID, the key, then me.

"Miss Vane." He lowers his voice. "I need to tell you something before we go downstairs. This box has been the subject of three access attempts in the past month. All three came from the same organization, a group called the Crescent Ridge Pack. They presented a document called a Pack Marital Asset Claim. We rejected it, but the claim included a request to be notified if the box was accessed. Our security team refused to share your details, though the attempt itself may have alerted someone watching the branch."

"And?"

"Which is not a legal instrument in this country." Alder smiles thinly. "Human banking law is clear, and boring. Only the named holder or a court order opens that box. They had neither, and they were rude about it."

"You are lucky you came today, Miss Vane." He steps aside and gestures to a steel door. "Your signature overrides their pending claims, so you may enter the vault." he said then i proceeded into the vault.

The vault is cold and silent. Alder leaves me alone with a long steel drawer that takes both hands to lift. I set it on the table, take a breath, and open the lid.

Three things lie inside.

First, a deed. Thick cream paper, a county seal, a name I have never seen on any pack record. WHISPERING CLIFFS ESTATE. Five thousand and twelve acres, northern Cascades foothills, transferred to Vespera Vane, sole owner, effective upon her twenty-first birthday. Three years ago.

Second, a leather ledger bound with a rubber band. Inside are stock certificates, dozens of them, tech companies I recognize and some I do not, all purchased by Elena Vane decades before I could read.

Third, an envelope with my name on it, in my mother's handwriting.

My hands shake as I tear it open. The paper smells faintly of her kitchen, of cinnamon and soap, and a sob breaks out of me, loud in the silent vault.

Vess. If you are reading this, I am gone and they have not found you yet. Do not trust a Cross. My money was never the prize. What your father left in your blood was. Go to the cliffs. The valley will keep you. I love you more than the moon. Mama.

What your father left in your blood.

So it was no accident, then, and no bad luck either. My mother knew they were coming.

A knock rattles the vault door. Alder's voice comes through the steel, high and thin. "Miss Vane. I am so sorry. You need to come out. Now."

I stuff the deed, the ledger, and the letter into my hoodie and step into the hallway.

Through the glass wall of the lobby, six men in black tactical vests walk through the revolving doors in formation. Garrick leads them, his eyes sweeping the room. Behind the pack, leaning on a silver cane, comes an old man in a gray suit.

The one who whispered a single word at the banquet.

Lifting his head, the old man looks straight through the glass at me.

      Then he smiled.

  • Blood Moon Apocalypse: Rise of the Last Lycan Sovereign    Liquidating the Invisible Millions

Garrick slams both fists onto the teller counter, and every human in the lobby flinches. "The omega is in this building!" His voice bounces off the marble. "I can smell her piss-scared sweat from here. Hand her over, or I'll take this place apart brick by brick."Behind the thick glass of Alder's office, I stand very still. The manager's hand trembles over a red button under his desk. Out in the lobby, two armed guards edge forward with their palms spread, staring at six wolves who could rip their arms off before they cleared leather. "Mr. Alder," I say, without turning my head. "I need a lawyer. A human one. Someone who hates shifters."He blinks at me. "Desmond Hale. He sued a pack out of three properties last spring." Alder stabs a number into his phone with one finger. "Eleven minutes, he says." "That is a long time to wait.""This glass stops armor piercing rounds." Alder swallows. "I never thought about claws." Eleven minutes feel like eleven years. G

  • Blood Moon Apocalypse: Rise of the Last Lycan Sovereign    Exploring the Moon Goddess Realm

The silver crescent keeps spinning in the corner of my vision. It waits for me.[Moon Goddess Realm: Fully Opened. Enter?] My body aches in places I did not know could ache. Every muscle feels frayed. But curiosity beats pain, and I press my back against the motel wall, close my eyes, and think one word.Enter. The room falls away. Beneath me the floor goes missing, and warmth floods up my spine. A low tone hums through my skull, then fades to silence. When I open my eyes, I am kneeling in the grass. Real grass, thick and cool against my palms, with dew soaking through my torn trousers. The air smells of wet earth and something sweet underneath. A pale gold light spills from a sky with no sun, bright enough to read by, soft enough to sleep under.I stand up slowly and turn in a full circle. The Realm stretches for what must be a mile. To my left lies a field of rich black soil, rows of loam so dark it looks wet. A hill ringed with silver-white stones

  • Blood Moon Apocalypse: Rise of the Last Lycan Sovereign    Escape into the Rain

Garrick's claws slice the air where my throat used to be.The boost hits my legs like lightning. Marble blurs under my boots, and the whole ballroom tilts into a streak of silk and screaming mouths. I duck under his second swipe, slide across a spill of champagne, and go through the gap between two enforcers who both reach for me and catch only wind.Behind me, the Alpha's voice splits the room."Get her! Alive! I want that bitch alive and bleeding!"Fourteen meters. Ten. A wolf in half-shift lunges from the left, his jaw stretched wide, and I swing a silver candelabrum off a side table into his muzzle. Metal meets teeth. He howls and drops. The silver burns his tongue black."Kill her!" Chloe's scream climbs over the chaos. "Rip her fucking throat out! She is nothing!"I hit the French doors with both shoulders.Glass explodes outward, and the storm swallows me.Rain falls like thrown gravel. Thunder rolls so close that the ground shakes with it, and the chill slaps every inch of my

  • Blood Moon Apocalypse: Rise of the Last Lycan Sovereign     Breaking the Alpha's Aura

The silence is so complete that I can hear the crystals in the chandelier tick against each other. Two hundred shifters stand frozen with champagne halfway to their mouths. The quartet's cellist still holds her bow in the air. Public mate rejection is more than an insult. It is a declaration of war against a bloodline, and every wolf in this room knows exactly what happens to the one who dares it.The last time anyone tried, the omega was dragged out and skinned alive in the courtyard. My left wrist screams. The pack mark flares crimson, then splits into hairline cracks of light, as if something underneath is trying to break the skin. Pain shoots to my elbow. I do not let it reach my face.Brandon stares at me. His mouth works, but nothing comes out. Then he laughs. It starts as a wet bark and grows until his shoulders shake. "Say that again." He wipes his eye with one knuckle. "Go ahead, little blood-bag. Say it again so the Coalition can hear you sign your own death war

  • Blood Moon Apocalypse: Rise of the Last Lycan Sovereign    The Alliance Banquet Taboo

The grand staircase has twenty-six steps. In my last life, I counted every one on my knees. Tonight I take them standing. My knees remember every step, and they ache anyway. Two hundred guests fill the ballroom below, wolves in tuxedos and wolves in diamonds, their laughter rising toward the chandeliers. A string quartet saws away in the corner. Every Alpha in the northern territories is here to drink Brandon Cross's champagne and congratulate him on swallowing Redwater Valley.Nobody looks up. Not yet. Silver trays glide between the guests, loaded with oysters and rare steak that cost more than my entire childhood, and the air tastes of perfume and roasted meat. I wear the same clothes I scrubbed their floors in this morning: a gray servant's tunic, black trousers, boots with cracked soles. The white dress they laid on my bed hangs in a closet upstairs, and the cup they wanted filled with my blood sits empty in the training hall. Garrick will find it in about four
