Dinner with Annika cleared a few things up, but not much. I know we’re all trying to cover our own asses, but why do witches have to be so fucking evasive? Everything is coded in one way or another, which puts my pointed teeth right on edge.

I mean, Emily is on the cusp of going through a life changing event—you’d think someone would at least be willing to tell her what to expect. Sure, ‘shrouded in secrecy’ is a thing, but fuck.

Emily came away with a headache and pretty much went straight to bed. I can’t blame her. After eating riddles all evening, my temples are throbbing as well. The difference is mine are beating from the desire to kick the shit out of people until they come clean about what the fuck is going on.

But that wouldn’t solve anything. And it damn sure wouldn’t make things easier for Emily, so I just have to swallow the impulse.

Instead, I shut myself up in my chamber and go over th

  • Bloodborne Secrets   Epilogue

Emily The lush grass tickles between my toes, and I scrunch my foot to pluck a few strands, then wiggle to let them fall again. Morning dew is pleasingly chilly on my skin, ripe with sorcery. Just as it always is in New Orleans. Most people think the thick air is thanks to the humidity, but I can tell them it’s magic that makes it hang so heavy. Gliding a hand up my arm to smooth the moisture over me, I savor how cool it is. By midday, I’ll be pining for this brisk morning. At last, the growing light on the horizon breaks over, and the golden ball of the sun rises to kiss my face. It bathes over the pastures at the far end of our property, casting long shadows from the forest land that borders ours. Their lush leaves gleam with warding magic to keep us safe. Not that there’s much to threaten us anymore, but after what we’ve been through, Thomas and Azriel insist on it. I have no such worries.  Even after three months, my powers haven’t

  • Bloodborne Secrets   Chapter 131: At Long Last

Leander I’ve known pain in my life, but it’s been ages since it’s cut this deeply. Losing Tatiana left me utterly bereft, and the fact that those bastards took my children as well utterly destroyed me. Only those incalculable losses surpass the misery of the scene unfolding. Emily’s eyes flood with fear, uncertainty, and grief as they search mine. “I… I don’t think I can do this…” She sounds so small. Like a little girl lost in the woods. But I know she’s so much more than that. Giving her hand another squeeze, I look to where Azriel lies beside me. The pool of blood seeping out of him has slowed, meaning that he’s spent almost everything he has. Breath gurgles in his throat, each weaker than the one before. “Quickly now, my darling,” I whisper to Emily. “We don’t have much time.” The girl bites her lip, and I can see in an instant she’s going to do it. She’s going to hate every second of it, but she’s going to do it. That look of defe

  • Bloodborne Secrets   Chapter 130: Letting Go

Emily Azriel’s chin is slick with blood when I make it to his side. Painful breaths rattle in and out of him, and his skin has gone so pale that his tattoos stand out in starker relief than ever before.“That was a hell of a show, Em,” he wheezes, forcing a grin. “I’ve wanted to watch that fucker get his for a long time. Finally seeing it isn’t such a bad way to go.” A door slams in my chest so hard it rattles my teeth.“Don’t say that. We can fix this.” I say it as resolutely as possible, but looking at him, I can see it’s going to be a steep climb to keep that promise. The skin around the blade is burnt and crackling as more and more tar-like blood oozes out around it. Azriel is surrounded by an obsidian seal of his own—an inky mirror of viscous, cursed blood. Sticky to the touch and reeking like death itself, I wind up covered in it sitting next to him. His ebbing life force covers my hands and clothes, and there’s nothing I can do to stop it.

  • Bloodborne Secrets   Chapter 129: At What Cost

Emily Daring to wrench my eyes away from Hiram for the first time, I whirl around to fix on Azriel. Just in time to see him stagger forward, unleashing a devastating roar. One of Hiram’s magic-wielders catches Azriel’s fist across his jaw, sending him flying. Only to be caught by Thomas and Leander. Every bit as stunned by Azriel’s wound as I am, they recover quickly enough to assure the villain a quick death. Az drops to one knee, a nasty, sputtering steam rising from his ribs. Dark blood slicks down his side, seeping away from the wicked-looking dagger wedged between his ribs. The handle snakes with carved symbols, and the bit of blade sticking out of his sizzling skin pulses black and silver. The silver is mortal to nearly all supernaturals, but whatever venomous power impregnates the blade saps his power with a merciless hunger. I’m at his side in an instant. Azriel rocks onto his back, weakening with each hissing breath. Sweat beads up on his br

  • Bloodborne Secrets   Chapter 128: The Reckoning

Emily My feet barely dust the floor. I could lift into the sky at any moment and dissolve into pure light, reducing everything but myself to darkness. The universe itself goes still as if it knows the weight of my capacities. Everything within my compass is a part of me. Each heartbeat. Every thread of magic contained in this place. All of it feeds into and through me, swelling my might. It’s exhilarating and peaceful at the same time. Sensations at once blissfully fresh and as familiar as if I’ve lived all this before. My consciousness races through the skulls of Hiram’s slaves, drinking their thoughts dry. In each I find nothing but pain and craven subservience. Twisted souls bent to obedience by forces beyond their comprehension. It’s repulsive. Not for their damned sakes, but that one man can be so ruthless as to perpetrate such things. Wreaking wholesale misery for… what? The power to destroy? Bile rises in my throat to think of h

  • Bloodborne Secrets   Chapter 127: Last Stand

Azriel Fuck, I hate this city. No wonder the Valen clan chose it as their headquarters for their nefarious bullshit. It’s goddamn impossible to navigate.  Especially with a head full of steam like the one I’ve got right now.  “Leander,” I snort, pacing like a maniac around the death-reeking vault. “Talk to me. You’ve got buddies who navigate the mines. Any chance there’s an entrance close by?” Poor fucker is at a complete loss. I’d feel bad for him if the need to get moving wasn’t so immediate. “You know what? Fuck it.” I’m up the stairs in a flash, leaving the two of them to try and keep up. Tunnels or no tunnels, there’s this throbbing ache like a grappling hook stuck in my ribs. The thing yanks like a fucker, and there’s no question who’s at the other end of the line. Emily lives in my body so fully, it almost brings me to my knees. Not just the tug of our bond, but everything. Whatever makes her, her. Beyond the magic link
