Denise Ashford, twenty years old, born to Mr and Mrs Gresham Ashford. The Ashfords were among the most influential families in Xela. If it was during the medieval times, then it would have been a family of dukes or viceroys or something like that. That's how much power they held especially in the political arena of Xela.
Denise was the second child, the first born being the twins George and Georgina Ashford. They were older than her by two years. From the moment Denise learnt how to crawl when she was a toddler, she could tell that she wasn't loved by her family. Her upbringing was left to the servants and she can't ever remember her mother holding her. Her father never talked to her and he would always treat her like an invisible thing. He never acknowledged her. Her two siblings were something else. They never gave her the time of the day. What they did best was beat and bully her whenever they got the chance. The three went to the sames schools but they made Denise know that she was never to disclose that they were related otherwise there would be hell topay. It worked well for her because she didn't want to be involved with them and so, she made sure to keep her distance from her two siblings who behaved like they owned the world. They were so pampered that it made Denise sad to think that they were from the same parents but their parents treatment of them was like heaven and earth.Denise remembers one day when she was ten. Her mother came to the kitchen where she was helping in cooking and threw a package at her."Tomorrow we have visitors coming. You better behave and don't say a word even when you are spoken to." She threw the words and walked out. Denise opened the package and in it was a new dress. The first she had ever received from her mother. The first new thing she had ever been given in fact. She looked at it and smiled. Did this mean that her mother was finally warming up to her? She wondered. From when she could remember, she never received any new clothes. The best she had were passed down to her from her older sister when they ran out of fashion. She didn't mind though. It wasn't like she went anywhere. Her place in the house was with the servants cooking and cleaning up the house. The following day, she was asked to be ready by six and she was. The visitors who arrived was their paternal grandfather and a few people she didn't know. She now realised why she was asked to be here. It was because of her grandfather. Among the visitors, there was a young boy around sixteen who was staring at her from the moment they entered the door. Denise didn't think anything about it because what would a ten year old think anyway? At the dinner table, Denise was all awkward because she wasn't allowed to eat with the family. She always ate in the kitchen with the maids and she didn't know the intricacies of such a sophisticated dinner. For example, she didn't know what dish to start with from the ones on the table. She sensed a glare and when she looked towards where that hot glare was coming from, she saw her mother looking at her with a warning in her eyes. Denise understood that look and as a result, she didn't eat much because she was afraid of the beating she will receive if she ever embarrasses this high class family before important visitors. After dinner, the adults excused themselves and went to her father's study to discuss whatever it was adults discussed indoors. She was left at the table with her siblings and that boy whose name turned out to be Caleb. Since she didn't have anything in common with these people, she left and went to the kitchen. By good luck, the maids had left food for her and after eating, she decided to retire to her roomn. Unlike George and Georgina whose rooms were in the second floor of the mansion, hers was small and was at the back of the house. It looked like the room was built as an afterthought and wasn't meant to be inhabited by anyone but she loved it here because it was away from her siblings and nearer the maids quarters. She knew that if anything was to happen to her, the maids would help her faster than her family would. She walked towards her room and what she didn't realise was that Caleb had been following her every step and when he saw her walk towards a place that had fewer and fewer people, he smiled lewdly and followed her. When she was about to enter her small room, she felt someone touch her shoulder and she turned. Good thing was she wasn't an easy going person. since her siblings would bully her left right and centre, and her mother would beat her at the slightest provocation, she had grown a thick skin. She had taught herself how to deal with bullies and even if she couldn't beat them physically, she had a sharp tongue that usually left her sister in tears. Even though she would be beaten after that, she would always smile remembering how that ugly face cried."What do you want?" She asked Caleb and he was taken aback for a moment because he saw a determination in her face that looked like it came from a grown woman."Nothing. I just wanted to see where you sleep. Can I come in?" He asked with a smile that made her suspicious."Why would I let you in my room and I don't even know you. No. You can't come in." She said and decided to return to the kitchen. When she took a step wanting to leave, he grabbed her by the hand and opened her door and then locked it from the inside after dragging her in."I wanted to be nice but it seems like you want it the hard way. You are so beautiful. Do you know that? And your brother dared me that if I sleep with you he will help me convince grandfather to buy me the latest Bugatti for my seventeenth birthday. So, this isn't personal," he said with a grin as he held her hand and dragged her towards her small bed."My parents will punish you if they know what you are about to do," she tried scaring him using her parents name but instead of showing fear, he laughed."Ha! You are funny! You think that I don't know that they don't care about you? They would even be happy if someone killed you," he said this time towering over her on the bed.She decided to try begging, "please don't hurt me. I'm only ten years old.""Don't worry. You are a big girl and it won't hurt. I will be very very gentle. I promise," he said with a smile as he started touching her everywhere. She felt disgusted and she knew that even if she screamed, no one would hear her as even the servants were in the main house cleaning up after the dinner. She had to act fast or she would lose her virginity at ten to a rapist. The little fighter in her couldn't and wouldn't allow that to happen. He would have to kill her first before he could defile her. They had a peaceful and a happy dinner. Denise was full of stories on how the shooting on the set was going and all and Ansel laughed so much and he had to admit that he had fun. It was a nice break from the monotony of office work. This was the life he had always dreamed of having. They went home after that and the night was good. With cuddles and love making and the following day Denise had to go back to the set to continue shooting. She was smiling like an idiot thinking of how much she had come to love Ansel. She would think of their love making sessions and that would bring a blush to her cheeks as she remembered all the positions they explored and how free she had become with the man.It was at this time that she was having thoughts about her husband and looking on on what was happening on set that she heard a voice behind her."Is that blush about my brother?" She spun and behind her stood Alex with a grin on her face."I'm sure that that blush was about you thinking of how he
Denise was still shaken from the dream. She saw the man clearly but she didn't see the woman. She always wondered why she could not clearly see the people in her dreams and she didn't know how to feel now that she saw that man. He was so clear in the dream that if she was a painter, she could have painted him. It was the woman she wondered who it was and why she would appear as her. She also wondered why for all the years she lived in that mansion she never heard the name Zara. So, who was she?At first, it didn't worry her because she always thought that it was her. She never saw the man clearly and they never talked. She thus always thought that it was a dream like any other the way a person dreams and forgets. But now that the subjects of her dreams had a face and a name, she wondered why to do with the information. She tried shaking off the dream but the feeling still lingered.Even as Ansel called Kai to prepare the vehicle so that they could go for dinner, Denise had still not
She trembled trying to remember why she would be in a forest but it just wouldn't come.“Who's there?" She shouted but there was no reply."Who's there?" She asked again this time inhaling deeply, adrenaline taking over as she heard sounds of dry leaves breaking as a set of footsteps walked towards her.She started to run towards where she was going though she didn't know where that was. When she turned, she came in contact with a hard broad chest and the man laughed as he held her shoulders to steady her."Always feisty, my Zara. Why would you run yet you knew we were to meet here? Sorry if l am a bit late. But you seemed to be enjoying yourself and I had to stare for a while," the man said but she didn't talk as she took a step back to look at him.He was tall, handsome and had a well built body. He seemed darker in complexion and he seemed tanned. He had thin lips that cresented when he laughed. He was wearing a black suit and black leather shoes. He looked to be an office man and
The couch she sat on was made of expensive soft material. It wasn't leather because it felt soft and fluffy but not cold and smooth. The last time she was here, she could have sworn that she saw a leather seat. Or did she? She couldn't even remember well because she fainted right after and... Ansel sat beside her with a smile on his face."What a pleasant surprise. I thought I would get to see you over the weekend but look at this. You are here," he said hugging her to him and she chuckled at that. She could feel the happiness in his voice and the hug."I thought the same too and that was why when I heard that we have been given half a day off today, the first thought that came to my mind was to come here and see you. But I had underestimated how hard it is to see the president," she said and he seemed to remember something. He stood up and walked towards the big office table where he usually worked. He pressed the intercom and in came a deep male voice."Boss?” "Come to my office,"
The male receptionist was professional though. Even if he wanted to laugh, he swallowed it and asked her, “do you have an appointment, ma'am?" He asked, ignoring the girls' chuckles."No. l just… I wanted to surprise him," she didn't know what to say and so, she just decided to go with the truth. She should have known that this was going to be a bad idea from the start. She just should have called him before getting here and he would have sent someone to pick her."Sorry ma'am. If you want to see the president, you have to make an appointment. Let me see…” the man said as flipped a book in front of him and after a while he said, "...and the next opening he has in his diary is on thirtieth August at two in the afternoon. How does that sound?" He said with a smile that told her that he wanted her gone. She laughed at that. The next appointment would be in August and they were in April. That meant that she had to wait for five months to see him. If only... But she didn't articulate her t
"Where were you and what were you doing when someone plotted against her? She is the sole reason why you are there! You are supposed to watch over her," the man on the other end of the phone asked in a quiet voice but Sasa knew that the quieter the boss was, the angrier he was."I'm sorry sir. It was a hindsight on my part. I know Madam Boss could have been hurt but I take alI responsibility. I promise it won't happen again. I will be more vigilant," Sasa said in a regretful tone. He, like Denise, didn't expect anyone to hurt her. But from that moment on, he vowed to be more vigilant and check everything twice."It better not happen again. Be more vigilant and make sure you deal. With those who wanted to harm her. I want a comprehensive report tomorrow. Do what you can, I will take all the responsibility," the man said and hung up.Sasa sighed and he wrapped his grabella with his index and thumb fingers and sighed heavily. He was really careless because he, like Denise, had thought t
