Birthday Wish

Kayla thought he was driving them back to the mansion but as the rain stopped, she realized that they have come farther away from civilization. She had never known about the existence of such a path and began worrying silently.

A few minutes later she could see no lights except for the beam of their car’s light. A shiver ghosted up her spine at the chilly road ahead, covered by pine trees on either side.

Occasionally she would steal a glace at him, wondering what his thoughts were. But as usual, she was met with a mask of indifference.

Just then the car took an uphill path, taking them to a higher altitude.

“Where are we going?” she hid the fear in her voice.

“You’ll see” he replied vaguely and remained silent for the rest of the ride, much to her distress.

And when they finally came to a stop, her heart galloped in her chest. She placed a hand over it, attempting to calm it down. She was too young to die of heart attack. And that too on her birthday? Absolutely tragic.
