I wasn’t sure how I made it out of the doctor’s office and down the hall toward Domi’s room. My body seemed to move on autopilot, carrying me forward while my mind struggled to process everything I had just learned.
When I finally reached the doorway, Domi’s voice called out to me.
“Mommy!”
His familiar bright tone pulled me back to the present.
“Auntie Hannah promised she’d take me to Wonderland once I’m better!” he continued happily, practically bouncing with excitement.
“Only if it’s okay with your mommy,” Hannah added with a grin.
Domi looked at me expectantly.
“Sounds great, baby,” I murmured, offering the biggest smile I could manage.
Hannah’s brows furrowed as she studied me. She knew me too well not to notice my distress.
After a moment, she turned to Domi.
“We’ll be right back, Domi,” she said, handing him the mammoth plushie. “Why don’t you play with your friend for a bit?”
Domi took the toy back into his arms and nodded.
Before I could protest, Hannah pulled me out of the room. We stopped in the hallway, close enough to keep Domi in sight but far enough away that he couldn’t hear us.
“What happened?” she asked seriously. “What did the doctor want to talk to you about?”
A lump formed in my throat.
I bit the inside of my cheek before finally telling her what Dr. Ward had said.
“T-they said I…” I stammered, struggling to find the right words. “If it really is leukemia… and if it’s high-risk, Domi may need a transplant. The best matches would probably be either me or… his father.”
Hannah pulled me into her arms.
“Oh, Riles…” she murmured, devastation coloring her tone. “Oh, goodness…”
I closed my eyes and leaned into the comfort of my best friend’s embrace. I did my best to blink back the tears threatening to fall.
I couldn’t cry. Not now. I didn’t want Dominic to see my red eyes and frightened expression.
We stood there for a moment, waiting until we had both regained control. Then Hannah pulled back slightly.
“Are you going to contact that bastard?” she asked, her lips twisting into a frown.
That bastard.
Otherwise known as Domi’s father.
I glanced back at my son.
“If he’s important to Domi’s treatment… then I have to.” I said. “I’ll do anything if it means making him better.”
Hannah nodded, solemnly.
“I think I need to go see him in person,” I continued, already regretting the idea despite knowing it was probably the best option. “This isn’t something I can explain over the phone, especially since he doesn’t even know about Dominic. And… I can’t exactly call him anyway.”
Another tense nod.
“Do you know where he lives?” Hannah asked.
“There’s an address on the business card he gave me.” I hesitated. “I think I need to find him there. Sometime after the biopsy. But—”
Hannah placed a hand on my shoulder.
I looked at her.
“No. You can’t wait on this.” she said firmly with a serious frown. “Time is of the essence, Riles. Go tomorrow, after the biopsy. I can take care of Domi and stay with him.”
I tried to argue. “I can find a caregiver – ”
“No way.” She cut me off, her expression stern. “You’re not doing this alone. Let me help. Please.”
My protest died on my tongue. Her expression was too serious to argue with. Like it or not, she was right.
This couldn’t wait.

The next morning, Dominic was taken in for a bone marrow biopsy.
Overnight, his condition had begun to worsen. His temperature continued to fluctuate, and despite my attempts to explain what the doctors would be doing, he didn’t truly understand what was happening.
His little frame looked so frail.
As the doctors prepared him for the procedure, terror filled his blue eyes.
“Mommy?” he asked in a tiny voice. “Am I going to die?”
My heart plummeted.
“No, baby,” I reassured him, keeping my voice as steady and soothing as possible. “Everything is going to be okay. You’re going to get better, and when you do, we’ll go to Wonderland together. You, me, and Auntie Hannah. Okay?”
Domi sniffled, and I held my pinky out.
After a moment of hesitation, he hooked his tiny finger around mine.
“Okay,” he whispered.

I left the hospital shortly after Hannah arrived and Domi had fallen asleep.
Watching him go through the procedure had only strengthened my resolve. I would go to the ends of the earth if that was what it took to save him.
I practically ran into my apartment and began searching for the business card that I had kept tucked away for years.
I found it in the bottom drawer of my closet, buried beneath a pile of old clothes.
At one point, I had considered throwing it away. I had thought it was stupid to hold on to something so meaningless. But now, I was grateful I hadn’t.
I stared at the card. There was his name. The name I had tried and failed to forget.
Killian Bryce.
My stomach tightened as memories of him rose unbidden in my mind.
Five years ago, I had been devastated by my breakup with Gareth, my “perfect” ex-boyfriend—a married man who had lied to me from the moment we started dating.
One night, tired of being alone in my apartment, I decided to go to a pub.
That was where I’d met Killian.
Ethereally handsome, charismatic, he was alluring in every possible way. Our chemistry had been undeniable, and our conversation soon led to the most passionate night of my life.
The next morning, I woke up alone.
The only thing I found on the nightstand was a business card with his name on it
Later, when I discovered I was pregnant, I used the number on the card to call him.
A woman answered.
I didn’t tell her what had happened between Killian and me. I was terrified that I had somehow landed myself in the exact same situation as I had with Gareth.
But the woman seemed to understand immediately.
“Oh, dear.” Her voice dripped with venom. “Do you know how many whores have called claiming they have urgent business with him?”
Her words were humiliating, but I tried to explain myself.
“Listen,” she cut me off. “I don’t care who you are – whore, slut, or whatever – and I’m not interested in what you have to say. Let me make this clear. He won’t see you, so don’t call again!”
Then she hung up.
A moment later, I discovered that my number had been blocked.
I closed my eyes and took a deep breath.
Even five years later, the humiliation still stung, but I forced it down.
Humiliation was nothing compared to my son.
No matter what it took, I would find Killian Bryce. And I would save Domi’s life.
RILEY“Are we going to Wonderland, Mommy?” Domi asked me as the car continued down the road.“Not exactly, honey,” I let him down gently. “But… we are going to an amusement park downtown! Doesn’t that sound fun?”He pouted a little, tugging at my sleeve. “You promised that we’d go to Wonderland with Auntie Hannah when I wasn’t sick anymore.”“Well, you’re not completely better yet, Domi,” I explained as I adjusted his seatbelt. “You’re getting better, but not enough to travel for a long time, and Wonderland is too far away. But we’re going to have so much fun today, okay? And once you’re all better, we’ll go to Wonderland and ride as many rides as you want.”Domi took a deep breath, and his little shoulders slumped for a moment before he nodded. “Okay, Mommy.”“Cheer up, bud,” I teased him softly. “There’s all kinds of fun things we can do at the smaller park, and I’ll buy you a biiiiiig thing of cotton candy. How does that sound?”Domi grinned. “Yes, please.”I ruffled his hair and t
RILEYAs Killian’s lips drew closer to mine, my mind returned to the dream. The rational side of me knew that I needed to push him off, break free from his hold, but the illogical part of me yearned for more of his touch. My breathing was unsteady, my body eager as the sweetness of his breath ghosted over me.Just as our lips were about to press against one another’s, the sliding door flew open.“Don’t be mean to Mommy!” Domi declared, and the speed at which we pulled apart was probably supersonic. Our son’s face was contorted into a determined frown, and had I not been flooded with the adrenaline of what almost happened, I would have laughed at the sight of such indignance on a four-year old’s features.“He’s not being mean to me,” I said as I fought to regain my composure.“I heard him!” Domi insisted, his vibrant blue eyes darting to Killian and narrowing. “He was yelling and being loud.”“We were just having a disagreement, Domi,” I tried to explain. “Sometimes grownups raise thei
RILEYHannah stayed in the valley for another day.I thought she would return to the city soon after I woke up, but she remained at my side, vigilant as if she were my guardian angel. In a way, she was, but I had to remind her repeatedly that I wasn’t paralyzed, just exhausted from the whole ordeal.“Shut it,” she said as she drew the blinds closed early that afternoon. “Stop resisting. You need to get some sleep, missy. The doctor said you were overly exhausted and malnourished, so I know you haven’t been taking care of yourself. Close your eyes and get some rest.”I grumbled in protest but rested back and closed my eyes. There was some truth to her words, but it was hard for me to slow down when I knew Domi needed me. Yet, at the same time, I couldn’t be my best self if I wasn’t healthy. So, I got some sleep, and when I awoke, Hannah was packing her things into a bag.“Hey,” she spoke soothingly. “I have to get back to the city. RILEY“T-tell me everything,” I said as I sat up further.“Whoa whoa, easy,” Hannah said with mild alarm, coaxing me back onto the pillows. “Don’t move around a bunch, you’re going to mess with the tubes.”I huffed at her fussing, but remembered the very same way I’d have to do this when Domi got too excited.“Fine,” I muttered as Hannah adjusted my blankets around me. As she tucked me in, I sighed. “Just like the orphanage, huh? Don’t you ever get sick of taking care of me?”My best friend exhaled a laugh. “I’m not your caretaker. I just don’t want you to hurt yourself. Besides… you took care of me back then as much as I did for you.”“Whatever,” I murmured, and then I took a deep breath. “Okay, spill. What happened?”Hannah took a seat in the plush chair beside the bed.She explained the details of that night, the way that Lisa had informed Killian of my absence, and how he, Dale, Lisa, and Jason had tracked her down to look for me. As she described with great detail the lengths th
RILEYMy consciousness came and went after I realized that my drink had been drugged.I remembered trying to call for help, to tell someone what had happened, but the pub was too loud, the music too distracting for anyone to hear me. Even if they had, I was too dizzy to speak too loudly. But I hadn’t gone without a fight.I struggled to get out of there, my legs wobbly but persistent as I left the pub.“You’re not going to get very far,” Gareth had warned me.I must have made things difficult, because in the next breath, he cursed.“That’s enough out of you,” he said next, and then he guided me forward.I blinked rapidly, my vision getting blurry.I remembered Gareth shoving me into his car, fastening my seatbelt as he leaned in closer.“Don’t worry, beautiful,” his voice purred in my ear. “I’m going to take good care of you. Just like I always have.”After that, everything became a blur of distorted sound and color. It was like trying to take in the world through a kaleidoscope, frac
KILLIAN “Are you sure this is the right building?” Dale asked Hannah seriously as we gazed up at the luxury apartment building before us.The human woman nodded. “I don’t know what unit he’s in, but I know he has an apartment here. He was telling someone at work about it.”I took a grounding breath as her words settled in.This was a bustling part of the city with plenty of humans around. If we wanted to avoid unwanted attention, we had to wrap this up quickly.I hated this situation more than I could properly express.Riley had already caused me too much trouble, but that’s not what pissed me off the most. No, I was truly angry at the fact that I couldn’t stop myself from interfering. She’d woven herself into the very fabric of my life, and this night had already been stressful enough without her adding to it.Yet… I couldn’t just let it go.This Gareth person sounded like bad news, and whatever she was doing here was risky at best, stupid at worst.Certain she’d be a liability in a
