“Lev and Ivan are dead,” Dimitri's words caused my eyes to widen.
“Lev and Ivan?” Skylar’s bodyguards. “What the fuck happened to them?” I asked.
“Exactly what I'm trying to find out. The penthouse was blown to pieces. Fuck, it was fucking bad. Elena almost died of a heart attack thinking Skylar was in there,”
Another wave of shock rammed through me at this new information. “How the fuck was the penthouse attacked?” It wasn't possible. Skylar's location had been thoroughly under wraps, and aside from Lev and Ivan, there were other security teams placed around, so how the fuck did the penthouse got blown up.
“Like I said, I'm trying to find out who the fuck thought it wise to attack me?”
“Do you think they were after you or Skylar?”
“I'm not sure yet,” He sighed. “I'm not sure if I want to know why Skylar is even at La Haven so late at night, but I'm glad she was before the attack,”
I wasn't surprised how he found out. I'd been the one who had inserted a mini tracking device into the bracelets Skylar, Zoey, and Elena wore. As long as Skylar and Zoey didn't take theirs off, we could always find them. Dimitri had gone the extra mile with Elena a year ago after the Slovakia incident and had a tracker inserted into her wrist covered with a flowery tattoo. Maybe once all this settled, Skylar and Zoey would get theirs.
“I'll take care of her,”
“Savio,” Dimitri's deep voice shook in warning. “Whatever you think you're doing, just remember that Skylar is Elena's sister. Don't forget that,”
My brows lifted, almost offended at what he was implying. “And what the fuck do you think I'm doing with her?”
“I don't want to know. Just get the girl out of La Haven. Don't take her over to my place, Elena isn't there. Zoey had a relapse when she overheard the news of the penthouse, thinking Skylar was in there, so they were in the hospital. Take her to your place while I figure out the fuck happened,”
Fuck. How the hell was I supposed to do that dressed as J?
“Let me know whatever you find out,” Ending the call, I quickly sent Skylar my home address. Maybe I could figure out a way to get her to my place without getting my cover blown.
I left Ronan at the security room and headed back to the room I'd left Skylar, only to find it empty.
Ronan found her on camera. She was in the lobby, where some personal belongings were usually handed over to security before the members were granted entry.
“Skylar,”
She turned to me as I approached her in the lobby. “Sorry, I left without saying a word. I hadn't realized it was so late,”
It was six after twelve past midnight. Normally, Skylar appointment was expected to be over three hours ago.
“Thanks again for tonight, I really appreciate it. Until next time. I'll get going now; I have a driver waiting for me outside,” She retrieved her belongings, and as we reached outside, there was neither a car nor Lev and Ivan waiting outside.
She took out her phone and scrolled through it before reading through a text. Her right brow raised. “It seems they won't be coming today,” She whispered more to herself.
“I'll drive you home,” This wasn't the first time I had driven her to the penthouse as J. I'd done it s few times, including her first time at La Haven.
“Thank you, but could you take me to this location instead,”
I nodded, taking a look at the text I'd sent her as Savio.
We climbed into my BMW, started the engine, and drove through Manhattan with my mask on while Skylar had been trying Elena's cell, but she wasn't picking up.
We climbed out of the car, and I parked the car near my penthouse. Skylar was still preoccupied with getting through to Elena, and I was still trying to figure out my next course of action when Polo and Rio— two of my men— stepped out of my place.
Instantly, the hairs on my skin stood in awareness and a familiar feeling of dread settled down my spine.
“Scendi!” Down!
I yelled and skittered towards Skylar, shoving her to the ground with my body on top of hers as gunfire rang out. The booming sound pummeled towards us, and the next thing
I felt was instant pain and blood trailing from my face.
SKYLAR DUVALSavio barely talked to me for the next few days. Instead, he kept me at arm's length. We barely exchanged a word or two throughout the day. Most of the time he locked himself up in his room, working behind his computer and helping Dimitri and the others with whatever they needed.Sometimes it almost felt like he couldn't wait to be out of here, far away from me.I had really fucked up. I shouldn't have kissed him. I should have regretted every second of that moment, but unfortunately, I didn't. Because it felt like some fun within me had been awakened. I felt different. Good different. More optimistic that my missing friends would be found and hopeful of whatever future awaited me after all this was over. And it was all because of Savio.I found myself wanting to be better for him. To look my best for him.It was ridiculo
SKYLAR DUVAL“We're going with the basic move first,” I watched, arms crossed as Savio positioned his stance on the rug, spreading his legs a few inches apart. He brushed his hands together, his biceps flexing under his T-shirt. “If someone is coming at you. Aim for the groin if you can. That tends to drop a guy like a sack of shit. But if you can't, you can try a hammer punch,” He clenched his fist and made a predictable hammer movement. “Or you can make use of your elbows. Or the heel of your palm,”I watched in silence as he demonstrated every basic move I could make when faced with danger.“Are we good?” He met my gaze and I nodded. “Good, then practice on me,”My rampant heartbeat faltered. “I don't want—”“You don't want to hurt me? Don't worry about me swee
“What the fuck is going on Dimitri?” I kept staring at the women. Thinking about the hell that would soon break loose once Skylar found out about the news.“They went after the women a week ago, they've been missing since then,”“Fuck,” I scrubbed a hand through my hair and tried not to panic. “Why didn't you tell me, I could have been able to track them down,”“And let the girl in on the fact that her friends are missing. She'll fucking lose it, Savio. Trust me, you won't be able to control that situation when it happens,”“And now this situation would be fuckton harder once Skylar finds out—”“Savio,” My heart almost stopped as I heard Skylar's panicked voice from the living room. “Savio!” The urgency and fear at it's fucking maximum.I instantly disconnected the call, taking out my gun from the back of my jeans and I rushed out to the sound of the increasing television volume.I was hit instantly in the chest at the sight of Skylar's round teary eyes fixed on the television screen
SAVIO RUSSOGroaning, I raked my hand through my hair, hating every second of this as I stared at the screen of my computer. I had no fucking idea how Tonia Guerra and Paweł managed to still stay hidden even until now. The few places we had spotted her had been checked out by Lorenzo and his men, and there was no fucking trace of those fuckers.I pulled my cell from the back pocket of my jeans and scrolled to the app for the inside security cameras searching for Skylar, and instantly, I found her in the kitchen, preparing lunch.I couldn't deny it, I was fucking proud of her. Day by day, hour by hour she has started to open up. Gradually. The list has been helpful and her determination to get back on her feet was applaudable.I pulled from my chair, and left the room, crossing the hallways to the kitchen.“Perfect timing, lunch is almost ready” She smiled, noticing me. She was lighter today. Brighter. Her eyes had a healthy glow.I grabbed a bottle of water from the fridge, raking my
SKYLAR DUVALIt'd been two weeks already since Savio and I left New York for one of the safe houses in Philadelphia. But that didn't really matter to me when every day felt the same. It always started with my usual nightmares where I see the people I love die at the hands of Tymon. It always felt so real.I sighed, dragging myself to the adjoined bathroom to take a shower, then dress and make my way through the house.I reached the kitchen just in time to find Savio preparing coffee. His hair mussed from sleep, his green eyes lazily blinking.“Morning,” He turned and flicked on the coffee machine.“Morning,” I took a seat on one of the stools, looking at the breakfast he had made already. “You made breakfast,” I noted, hiding my disappointment. Ever since we got here, I made cooking and cleaning a habit to distract myself from my thoughts and the attention of Savio's stare. It was nothing sexual. It only meant his subtle disapproval.Since we got here he had suggested a few times that
SAVIO RUSSO I still couldn't take my eyes off her. Even if I could, I wouldn't want to. She was so fucking beautiful and having her this close did crazy things to me. I suddenly felt like a prick for understanding Tymon's obsession with her.“You can come closer,” I said, and without responding, she inched closer to get a better view of my wound, her shoes touching the front of my boots. She was so close. A tempting breath away.“I appreciate your concern and your help in keeping me safe. I know Elena is a very good friend of yours, but trust me, the bad guys in my story always end up winning and nothing else matters,”“First of all, Elena isn't the only reason I want to protect you,” Elena was one of the reasons, but definitely not top on the list. “I'm helping you because I want to. And lucky for you, I wasn't one of the good guys and there hasn't been a fight I haven't won,”Her lips curved in a barely there smile, transforming her into the brilliant beauty of a woman. But the stu
