"Where are we going?"

"You'll see."

"Kaelen."

"You'll see, Aylin."

I gave up asking after the third corridor.

He walked ahead of me with that particular energy, like he had hot coals in his pants, hands in his pockets, pace slightly too fast to be casual. I followed him through the main gallery, down a wide staircase I hadn't taken before, and into a part of the palace that smelled like warm bread and firewood.

He stopped in front of a set of heavy double doors and pushed them both open.

"Where are we going?""You'll see.""Kaelen.""You'll see, Aylin."I gave up asking after the third corridor. He walked ahead of me with that particular energy, like he had hot coals in his pants, hands in his pockets, pace slightly too fast to be casual. I followed him through the main gallery, down a wide staircase I hadn't taken before, and into a part of the palace that smelled like warm bread and firewood. He stopped in front of a set of heavy double doors and pushed them both open.It was the royal kitchen, it was enormous. Long stone counters running the full length of the room, copper pots hanging from iron racks above, three fires burning at different heights along the far wall. At least a dozen maids and servants moved between stations, heads down and focused on what they were doing.Every single one of them looked up when Kaelen walked in."Good morning." He smiled at the room. "I need everyone to stop what they're doing and leave the kitchen immediately."Silence.A maid s

When I woke the room was pale with early morning light.I turned my head.Lucien was on the floor beside my bed. His hair had been pushed back from his face and I could see the stubble along his jaw. He looked younger asleep. I looked at the ceiling. The dream sat in the back of my mind. Mira's throat. All those bleeding faces. The nightmares had not stopped once since I arrived here. Not once."You're awake."I looked down.Lucien's eyes were open, watching me."Yes," I said."Are you okay?""Yes." I lied.He looked at me a moment longer like he wasn't entirely sure he believed that. Then he pushed himself up from the floor and sat on the edge of the bed, running a hand through his hair."I need to go," he said. "But if you need anything.... anything at all.... I'll be there immediately.""Okay."He stood. Crossed to the door."Lucien."He stopped and turned."Thank you."Something moved across his face. "You're welcome, My Lunaria."Lunaria??He left.I lay there for a moment longe

  • Bound To The Lycan King    CHAPTER 32: The Guilt that comes with Survival

AYLIN'S POV They are all here.Every single one of them.I find myself standing in the center of a circle I did not walk into, and they are surrounding me, every girl who came to this palace when I did. The ones I passed in corridors, the ones I sat beside at meals, the ones whose names I never learned and the ones I did.The girl who prayed silently with her hands folded under her chin every morning in the vessel quarters. The girl who always stood beside Genevieve, quiet and obedient, following her like a shadow. Genevieve herself, standing straight even now, even here. And Mira. They are all bleeding. From their eyes, dark lines running slow and steady down their cheeks. From their mouths, spilling over their lips and dripping from their chins. From their fingernails, each drop falling to the ground without a sound. And they are smiling.Laughing and weeping at the same time, that horrible sound layered over itself, and every single face is turned toward me."It's your fault," the

LUCIEN’S POV"The council elders have called a meeting, Your Majesty."I looked at the guard."They called a meeting?" I said slowly."Yes, Your Majesty. They are assembled in the council hall and request your.....""They request." I looked at him calmly. "The elders called a meeting and are requesting my presence?."The guard shifted, his eyes darting to the floor. "Yes."I straightened my shirt. "Tell them I'm coming."The heavy oak doors of the council hall groaned as I pushed them open without announcement.Ten elders. Seated in the curved formation they always used when they wanted to feel collectively powerful. Old faces, old titles, old ideas about how a kingdom should be run and who should be running it.I took my seat at the head of the table. I said nothing. I just looked at them and waited.Elder Voss spoke first. He always did."Your Majesty. We have noticed, in recent days, how close you have become with the human." His voice dripped with disdain. "We believe this... atta

LUCIEN’S POVI looked at the seal for a long moment without moving."Seraphine," Kaelen said quietly.I set the letter down. "I need space. Everyone out."Terak stood without a word. He looked at me once on his way to the door, the kind of look that carried everything he wouldn't say out loud and then he was gone.Kaelen lingered."Are you okay?""I'm about to find out."He stayed one more second. "I'm here. Whatever you need." He put his hand briefly on the doorframe. "Everything will be fine, brother."Then he was gone too.The study went quiet.I sat with the letter in front of me and didn't open it immediately.Seraphine.My twin. Four years of silence between us and she was writing to me now like it was nothing. We had been eighteen when our parents died. Inseparable before that always together, always fighting, always fine five minutes after. She was the louder half. I had needed her more than anything after they died. But she had left.Three weeks after the burial, a letter

LUCIEN’S POV"You called for a meeting?"Terak stepped in first, already reading the room before he crossed the threshold. Kaelen came in right behind him.Nerissa was still standing by the desk. She turned when they entered. "Beta. Gamma."Terak inclined his head once. "Nerissa."Kaelen smiled. "Nerissa. Always a pleasure."She returned it with practiced civility, then looked back at me."That will be all," I said. "The report was thorough. Well done.""Thank you, Your Highness."She left. The door had barely closed before Kaelen turned around. "What was she doing here?""Delivering reports." I moved behind my desk and sat. "I asked her to.""What kind of reports?""Warrior distribution, Female battalion assignments across the packs."Kaelen blinked. "You could have asked me.""She is one of the highest ranking in this kingdom. She's capable.""I know she's capable." He dropped into the chair across from my desk. "I'm just saying. You two were awfully close just now."Terak sat witho
