ログインChapter Eight: Public Eyes, Private Chains
The car door opened before Ammie could fully steady her breath. “Step out,” Adrian said from inside, his voice calm as always. Ammie glanced at him briefly. “You could at least say please,” she muttered under her breath. His eyes shifted to her. One look. Enough. She stopped talking. Then stepped out. --- The venue was louder than she expected. Ammie paused at the entrance, staring at the grand building lit with golden lights, luxury cars lined neatly outside, and people dressed like they belonged to a completely different world. This wasn’t just an event. It was power on display. Adrian stepped beside her, adjusting his cufflinks slightly. “Stay close,” he said. “I’m not a child,” Ammie replied instantly. His expression didn’t change. “I didn’t say you were.” Then he walked ahead. As if that settled everything. Ammie exhaled and followed. --- Inside, everything felt heavier. Eyes. So many eyes. People turned as Adrian entered—some immediately straightening, others smiling too quickly. Whispers started almost instantly. “That’s him…” “He rarely attends events like this…” “Who is she with him?” Ammie felt it immediately. She was the question no one was ready to ask out loud. Adrian didn’t stop walking. Neither did she. --- “Adrian.” A sharp voice cut through the crowd. Ammie looked up. The same woman from the house. Perfect posture. Sharp dress. Controlled smile—but eyes that didn’t smile at all. She walked directly toward them. And stopped in front of Ammie. Not Adrian. Ammie. “I didn’t expect you to bring… company,” she said lightly. Ammie stayed calm. “Hello.” The woman ignored her greeting. “Adrian,” she continued, turning slightly to him now. “We need to discuss the merger proposal. Now.” Adrian’s gaze flicked to her. “Later.” One word. Dismissal. The woman’s smile tightened. “Of course,” she said softly, but her eyes stayed on Ammie. “I see you’ve changed your preferences.” Ammie frowned slightly. “Excuse me?” The woman finally looked at her properly. “You’ll understand soon enough,” she said, voice sweet but sharp. “People like you don’t stay in places like this by accident.” Ammie’s chest tightened. Before she could respond— Adrian spoke. “Enough.” The temperature dropped instantly. Even the woman went silent. His voice wasn’t loud. But it was final. “Stop wasting my time,” he said calmly. “If you have something to say, say it properly.” The woman’s face shifted slightly. Then she forced a smile. “Understood, sir.” She turned and walked away. But not before one last glance at Ammie. Cold. Measuring. --- Ammie turned slightly toward Adrian. “That’s your assistant?” she asked. “She works under my company,” he corrected. “She hates me.” “She doesn’t matter,” he replied immediately. Ammie scoffed softly. “That’s convenient.” He looked at her. “You’re not here to be liked.” That silence after his words felt heavier than the crowd. Ammie looked away first this time. --- They moved deeper into the event. Flashes of cameras appeared. Adrian’s arm was lightly offered toward her—not touching, but close enough for appearances. “Hold my arm,” he said. Ammie blinked. “Why?” “Because people are watching.” She hesitated. Then placed her hand on his arm. Instantly— Whispers grew louder. Camera clicks increased. Ammie felt it. Eyes everywhere. Judgment. Curiosity. Rumors forming without words. She leaned slightly closer to him, voice low. “I feel like I’m being displayed.” “You are,” he replied calmly. Her head snapped slightly toward him. “That’s not funny.” “I’m not joking.” --- They stopped briefly near a group of executives. One of them smiled warmly at Adrian. “Didn’t expect you to attend with someone tonight,” the man said. Adrian didn’t hesitate. “She’s with me.” No explanation. No detail. Just ownership. Ammie’s fingers tightened slightly on his arm. She didn’t like how that sounded. But she didn’t correct him. --- Later, as they stood near the balcony, away from the noise, Ammie finally spoke. “Why did you really bring me here?” Adrian looked ahead at the city lights. “Exposure,” he said simply. “To who?” “To everyone.” She frowned. “That doesn’t answer anything.” He turned slightly toward her. “It answers everything you need to know.” A pause. Then he added— “Get used to it. This is your life now.” Ammie stared at him. For the first time… The reality settled deeper. This wasn’t just a contract. This was a world she had stepped into— And couldn’t easily step out of. ---The sun had barely begun to creep through the curtains when Ammie slipped out from under Adrian’s arm. She moved like a ghost, grabbing her robe and ghosting out of the room before the warmth of the bed could tempt her back. She didn't stop until she was locked in the downstairs bathroom, her heart hammering a frantic rhythm against her ribs. She fumbled for her phone and hit the speed dial for Blue.Blue picked up on the second ring, her voice raspy. "Ammie? It’s six in the morning. Is the house on fire?""I did it," Ammie whispered, her eyes wide in the mirror. "Blue, I crossed the line. I destroyed the line. The line is a pile of ash."There was a long, stunned silence on the other end. Then, a loud thud—Blue likely sitting bolt upright in bed."What the fuck?" Blue’s voice was a frantic hiss. "Ammie! You did it? With the 'Contract King'? With Adrian?""Yes," Ammie breathed, leaning her forehead against the cool glass of the mirror. "It just... it happened. In the kitchen, then the
The house felt quieter than usual that morning, but it wasn’t peace—it was distance.Ammie moved around the kitchen slowly, making tea she barely intended to drink. Her mind was elsewhere, replaying Bianca’s words, Adrian’s silence, and the way everything had started to blur lately.Contract. Control. Confusion. And something else she didn’t want to name yet.---Adrian came downstairs later than usual. No suit jacket. No usual sharpness in his posture.Just a man who looked like he hadn’t fully slept. His eyes landed on her immediately. She noticed. But didn’t look up.---“Morning,” he said finally.Ammie nodded slightly. “Morning.”Short.Careful.Different from before.---He walked into the kitchen but didn’t sit immediately. He just watched her for a second.“You’re leaving early?” he asked.Ammie paused slightly. “Work.”He frowned a little. “You didn’t wait for me.”That made her look up.“…Wait for you?” she repeated.Adrian hesitated. Then corrected himself. “We usually leav
The office didn’t calm down as the day went on.If anything, the whispers only got worse.Ammie could feel it everywhere she walked—glances that lasted too long, conversations that stopped too quickly, phones that suddenly tilted away the moment she approached. She kept her head down, but her thoughts refused to stay quiet. This is what happens when I get close to him.Inside Adrian’s office, the atmosphere was different.Colder.More controlled. His PA stood in front of his desk, tense.“We’ve managed to suppress some of it,” he said carefully. “But the image already spread before we could contain it.”Adrian leaned back slightly in his chair.“Who started it?”“We’re still tracking—”“I want names,” Adrian cut in immediately. The PA nodded quickly. “Yes, sir.”Silence followed.Adrian stared at the tablet again. Not the picture. The comments. The assumptions. The word wife used like it meant nothing. His jaw tightened slightly.“…They don’t know anything,” he muttered. But somehow—
Ammie didn’t go back to her desk immediately. She stood in the hallway for a while, phone still in her hand, Blue’s voice echoing in her head even after the call ended. “Girl, that man likes you.” She exhaled sharply. “No,” she whispered to herself. “No, that’s not it.” But her chest didn’t agree. Inside the office, Adrian hadn’t moved much since she left. The file on his desk was still open, but his focus wasn’t on it anymore. It was on her. The way she looked at him after the kiss. The shock. The hesitation. And the fact that she didn’t immediately hate it. His jaw tightened slightly. “…That was a mistake,” he muttered. But even saying it didn’t feel convincing. A knock came at his door. “Come in.” His PA stepped inside carefully. “Sir… there’s something you should see.” He handed over a tablet. Adrian took it, glanced once— And his expression darkened. Ammie’s name. His name. A picture. From the office hallway earlier. Not the kiss
Morning came with a strange kind of calm. The kind that didn’t last.Ammie stood in front of the mirror, adjusting her outfit carefully. Her fingers paused for a second as her thoughts drifted back to last night. The conversation. The silence. The way things didn’t feel broken anymore… but not fixed either.“…What exactly are we doing?” she murmured. She shook it off quickly.Work.She needed to focus on work.---The moment she stepped into the company building, she felt it.Eyes.Whispers.Muted conversations that stopped the second she passed.Ammie slowed slightly, pretending not to notice—but she heard enough.“That’s her…”“The CEO’s wife…”“Contract or not, she’s really here…”Her grip tightened slightly on her bag.So it was starting again.---At the reception, one of the assistants gave her an awkward smile. “Good morning, ma.”Ammie nodded politely. “Morning.”But even that felt… different.Like they weren’t sure how to treat her anymore.---She walked toward her desk, try
The word stayed between them.“Stay.”Ammie didn’t move immediately. Her fingers tightened slightly around the edge of her bag as she tried to understand what that one word meant now. Not before. Not during the contract. But now.Adrian didn’t rush her. He just stood there, watching, waiting—something he rarely did.“…In your room?” she finally asked, her voice low.He nodded once. “Yes.”Silence followed. Not uncomfortable.Just… careful.Ammie looked at him for a long second, searching his face for something—control, pride, indifference. But what she saw instead only confused her more.Calm.Maybe even… sincerity. She exhaled softly.“…Okay.”Not fully certain. But not resisting either.---The room felt different the moment she stepped in.Not because it had changed—But because she had.Ammie walked in slowly, her eyes taking in the space like it was new. She had been here before, but never like this. Never with the understanding that she wasn’t just passing through.Adrian closed
