Chapter 84: Kale's POV

I cleaned her first, before either of us slept, with some water I got from the basin in the room and a cloth I worked slowly over her skin while she drifted somewhere between waking and not.

"That's cold," she mumbled once, barely awake, when the cloth caught her ribs.

"It won't be in a moment."

"Mm." Her eyes stayed closed. "You're being very thorough about this."

"You deserve thorough."

She didn't answer that one, already halfway back to sleep, and I found I didn't want

Chapter 86: Aneira's POV"Hold still."Hex did not hold still. Hex had, in fact, made it his personal mission for the last quarter hour to be anywhere except where the damp cloth in my hand was currently aimed, and he chose that exact moment to launch himself sideways off the windowsill and skid under the bed like the little rascal he was. "You smell terrible, really terrible, Hex. Come and get cleaned!"A loud, indignant meow answered me from the shadows."I will not take no for an answer, Hex. Come out of there immediately!"I got down on my knees, cloth still dripping, and reached under the frame like a woman who had, at some point in the last several months, apparently signed on to be this cat's personal attendant without ever formally agreeing to the position. He evaded my hand twice, hissed once for effect, and finally allowed himself to be dragged out by the scruff, glaring at me the entire time like I'd personally offended his ancestors."You are the single most ungrateful cr

Chapter 85: Lyra’s povThe bonfires went up before dusk, stacked higher than I'd seen them in years, and by the time the sky had bled fully into dark, half of Ashfang had gathered in the ceremonial grounds to watch a man take a title that had never rightfully belonged to him.I kept my eyes down and my hands full, the way I'd learned to survive most evenings in this pack, weaving through the crowd with a tray of spiced wine that emptied faster than I could refill it. Nobody looked twice at a servant. That had always been my one reliable advantage, and tonight I intended to use every ounce of it.Cassian held court near the central fire, dressed in ceremonial black that made him look considerably more like an Alpha than he had any right to, accepting congratulations with the easy, practiced warmth of a man who'd clearly rehearsed this exact posture in front of a mirror more than once. I refilled his cup without being asked, the way I always did, and let my gaze slide past him the way a

Her eyes stayed closed. "You're being very thorough about this.""You deserve thorough."She didn't answer that one, already halfway back to sleep, and I found I didn't want to wake her further to hear whatever she might have said in return. There was something in being allowed to simply take care of her, quietly, without either of us needing to say anything about it, that made my wolf purr in content and the man even happier. I pulled her against me once I'd banked the fire low enough to last the night, skin to skin beneath the furs, her back fitted against my chest the way it had every night since the hot spring weeks ago, except tonight there was no fabric betw

Chapter 83: Aneira’s POV "I want you, Kale." I held his gaze, letting him see there was no hesitation left in it. He lifted me from the water without further warning, and I wrapped myself around him on instinct, water sliding down both our bodies as he carried me back toward the cabin. He laid me down among the furs before the hearth, firelight catching every drop of water still clinging to my skin, and the look on his face when he finally settled over me was one I hadn't seen from him before, not possessive exactly, though that lived in it too, but something closer to a man finally allowed to stop pretending he wasn't starving. He kissed me slow at first, like he intended to memorize the exact shape of my mouth before anything else was allowed to happen, and I met him there without hesitation, my hands finding his hair, his shoulders, every scar I'd stitched closed myself months ago now warm and familiar beneath my palms. When his mouth found my throat, I arched into him without d

Chapter 82: Aneira’s POVA servant found me in my room just past midday, hunched over one of the witches' old manuals with three others stacked open around me, trying to piece together anything that might tell me how to help a pup I wasn't even allowed near anymore. I'd been at it since dawn, ever since Altair's ruling had left me with nothing else to do with my hands and far too much time to sit with what I'd seen. The servant apologized for the interruption, saying only that Lady Aurelia wished to see me at my earliest convenience. I closed the nearest book and spent the whole walk to the sitting room turning over every possible reason she might want me, none of which settled the pit growing in my stomach. She was seated near the window when I arrived, a piece of needlework forgotten in her lap, and she looked up with an expression I couldn't immediately place. "Aneira, sit with me for a moment."I did, perched at the edge of the chair across from her, waiting."Kale spoke with hi

Chapter 81: Kale's POVSelene found me in the training yard before I'd finished cooling down from the morning's drills, sweat still cold against my skin in the wind."The Alpha will see you within the hour," she said, without preamble. "About your proposal."I realized that going through Selene was going to save me more time than hoping he would ever agree to meeting me. "Good.""Don't sound so certain." She studied me with the particular flatness she reserved for everyone. "He's already decided he doesn't like it. You'll have to be better prepared than confident."I took the warning for what it was worth, which was considerable, and spent the walk back to the pack house turning the argument over one more time, testing every weak point before he found it first. My grandfather received me in the same library he'd used the first morning I arrived, maps still spread across the table, though a different set now, the eastern border with BloodMoon's territory marked in fresh ink. He didn't
