Severin Crowe sat across from Lyra in the back room of the river town inn, turning a cup of cold tea between his long fingers.

The guards had retreated at his word, drawn back into the shadows of the hall and then out through the orchard, leaving the house silent and empty. Mira Lane had fallen asleep against Ren's shoulder in the cart, exhausted and trembling. Mara sat in the corner with her silver blade across her knees, watching the envoy as if she expected him to bite.

  • Bound to the Night lord    The council of three people

The road south took eleven days. They travelled in a long, slow caravan of wagons and carts, with the foundling families at the center and the wolves of Ashfall riding at the edges. Snow gave way to mud, and mud gave way to green. By the time they reached the river towns, the orchards had burst into bloom, and the air was thick with the scent of blossoms and wet earth.Lyra rode at the front of the caravan beside Elara, who had insisted on sitting upright and refusing every offer of a blanket. Her mother's hair had begun to grow back silver at the temples, but her eyes were bright, and she laughed easily now, as though the years in the holds had been a bad dream she was slowly waking from."You're staring again," Elara said, not looking up from the reins."I'm learning your face," Lyra said. "I've had twenty years to catch up on."Elara's hand found hers across the gap between the wagons, warm and steady. "Then we'll have plenty of time."Kaelen rode on Lyra's other side. He had not s

The northern holds did not fall all at once. They simply stopped holding.By midmorning, the gates stood open to the mountain wind, and the iron portcullis hung rusted and silent above the entrance. The guards had fled through the back passes before dawn, leaving their helms and blades scattered across the courtyard. The towers still stood, but their torches had gone out, and the great bell that had rung through the gorge had finally fallen quiet.Lyra stood on the bridge with the wind tugging at her hair and watched the light spread slowly across the snow. She had not slept. None of them had. The children had gone down the mountain road at first light with Dorian leading the way, their bare wrists held high, their voices singing softly as they walked. The families would meet them in the valley, and the first of the wagons from the river towns were already on the south road, carrying blankets and bread.Elara walked beside her, leaning lightly on Kaelen's arm. The color had returned t

The voice in the stone was not cruel. That was the first thing Lyra understood as it filled her chest, slow and vast and patient. It did not shout or threaten. It simply asked, the way an old tree might ask the wind why it had been struck, and it waited for an answer.Who holds the mark?Lyra closed her eyes. She could feel every marked child in the chamber, their small hearts beating in the same rhythm as the walls. She could feel her mother's blood moving sluggishly through her own veins, faint and thin and still stubbornly alive. She could feel Kaelen's hand, warm and steady, on the back of her neck."I do," she whispered. Then you must choose the price.Elara's grip tightened. "Lyra, do not listen to it," she said urgently. "The ward takes what it is given. It has taken everything from me. It will take everything from you.""Then what do you suggest?" Lyra asked gently. "That we leave the children in the cages, and the court in its vault, and the holds to drain the next mother and

The old fortress shook as the first blow landed.Corin met the nearest guard with a clash of steel that rang off the black stone walls. He moved with a fierce, reckless precision that Lyra had never seen in him before, all the careless charm burned away. His shoulder slammed into the guard's chest, driving him back against the iron railing of the stair, and the man's helm rolled across the floor with a hollow clatter. The second guard came at Corin from the side, his blade cutting low toward Corin's knees. Corin twisted, took the blow on the flat of his sword, and let the momentum carry him into a sharp counterstrike that opened the guard's arm to the bone. The man cried out and stumbled back, and Corin did not give him a chance to recover. He pressed forward, step by step, until the guard's back was against the wall and the stair was clear behind him.He was breathing hard when he looked up at Lyra, his face bruised and streaked with sweat."Go!" Corin shouted over his shoulder. "Get

Seraphine descended the last stair without hurrying, her green velvet skirts whispering against the stone. Two guards followed her, their steel helms gleaming in the lamplight. Behind them, the corridor stretched into darkness, and Lyra could hear the faint, distant clink of chains somewhere far below.Kaelen stepped in front of her at once. His sword was half drawn, and his face had gone very still."You will not touch her," he said.Seraphine's gaze passed over him without interest. "Kaelen. You have grown into a man who thinks his anger is a shield. It is a charming habit, but it does not stop the holds from wanting what they want.""What do they want?" Lyra asked.Seraphine turned to her, and for the first time her voice lost its polished calm. "They want the blood of the first marked woman, Lyra. The gate was built to answer it. The bridge was built to answer it. Every ward in these mountains was built on Elara's blood, and every marked child who has come through them since has p

The cell at the bottom of the holds was smaller than the first, and colder, and it smelled of iron and old blood.Dorian lifted his lantern. Its light fell across a narrow bed of gray stone, a bucket in the corner, and a thin figure curled beneath a blanket so worn it had turned almost transparent. A silver chain ran from a band on the woman's wrist to a ring set into the far wall. The crescent on her wrist glowed faintly, like a coal left in the ashes.Lyra stopped at the threshold. Her heart beat so hard she could feel it in her teeth. The woman on the bed stirred. Her hair was gray and thin, spilling over the pillow, and her face was so pale and lined that for a moment Lyra thought she was looking at a stranger. Then the woman turned her head, and her eyes opened. They were gray. Exactly the same gray as Lyra's own."Lyra," the woman whispered. Her voice was cracked and faint, but it held a warmth that made Lyra's knees weaken. "You came."Lyra took one step into the cell, then ano
