The tap of her heels on the floor made Ava flinch. Her hands clenched at her sides, nails digging deep into her palm. Ethan didn't flinch. He was getting used to her impromptu barging. “What is she doing, standing there with you?” Miranda demanded, her fingers gripping her designer purse. Ava inhaled, bracing herself for the tantrums she was about to throw. Ethan’s voice was calm. “Told you she lives here.” Miranda laughed, a sadistic and intimidating laughter. “In your house? Ethan, this isn't a shelter for just anybody.” Ava held her breath. Try so hard not to whack Miranda on the head. “You have to make peace with it though.” She scoffed. “Peace with it? She works for you, I'm your girlfriend and I don't even live with you.” She said almost in a pleading voice. Ethan didn't speak. “She shouldn't be anywhere near your private life, babe.” “I could leave.” Ava spoke before she realized it. “Oh please,” Miranda fired back. “Spare me the good girl act. Girls like you always find a way to climb.” “Who doesn't want to be at the top though?” Ava shrugged, gaining more confidence than ever. Ethan clenched his jaw. “Ava,” his tone was soft towards her. "We'll talk tomorrow, give me an answer then.” She nodded. “Yes sir.” Miranda blinked, eyes flicking from Ethan to Ava and back to Ethan. “Answer to what?” She demanded. Ethan didn't look at her. “Nothing you need to be concerned about.” Miranda turned her focus fully to Ethan, trying to read his expressionless face. And when she couldn't. “Ethan…what's going on with you?” She asked in a hushed tone. He didn't give her a reply. Ava stepped away to allow them to have a private conversation. She headed towards the staircase. But Miranda wasn't done yet. “Babe,” she's stressed. “I came to spend the night with you.” Her voice dropped, low and seductive. “It's been a while, do you not miss me?” Ava steps halted. Those words cut into her more than she wanted to admit. He rubbed his face, a reflex ability of his whenever he feels exhausted. I need her. He thought. It wasn't Miranda that he needed, it was Ava. “Ethan, are you listening to me?” She touched him. “Miranda…I have work to do.” He said struggling with his inner thoughts. He deeply wanted her. She gasped, disbelief clouding her eyes. “You’re rejecting me?” Her voice cracked. There was an infinite amount of silence. Ava swallowed hard from where she stood. Her heart felt empty and somewhat betrayed. “This is because of her, isn't it.” She touched him. Ethan didn't move her hand away but he didn't also feel anything from the touch. “I said, I have work.” He said flatly. Miranda froze, staring up at him like she didn't recognize him anymore. Ava walked the rest of the stairs with a heavy heart. Later that night, the house was quiet and dark. A soft knock on Ava's door. She opened the door to find Miranda standing there. She had spent the night at the penthouse. “Can we talk?” Miranda asked. Her heart raced, the thoughts of Miranda finding about the one-night stand with Ethan still scared. She considered saying no but she nodded and stepped into the hallway. Miranda looked her up and down in assessment. “Most women in your position talk. You are overly quiet, Ava.” Ava didn't respond. “It won't last, you know.” She blinked. “What won't?” “This…this attention.” Miranda's voice was engraving. “Men like Ethan do not give away love.” She exhaled. “It's quite expensive.” “And he can comfortably afford anything he wants.” Ava responded. She was shocked that Ava would say something like that. “Showing your true self, huh?” Miranda leaned in close enough for her perfume to fill the air. It was sharp and intoxicating, like a warning she couldn't ignore. “You're temporary, Ava. Be careful not to forget your place.” Her words sliced through the hallway. She walked away without waiting for a response. Ava stood there for some moments then closed the door softly. She just inhaled and let the heaviness simmer. The next morning, Ethan was about to leave for work. She stopped him. “I'll move to your penthouse.” His shoulders relaxed slightly. “Good.” He smirked, he really felt good on the inside. He was probably going to have a great day. I just want to be beside you even if I can't have you. She thought. At the company, words travelled faster than any other thing. The sound of shuffling papers and clicking keyboards filled the office, yet all Ava could hear were the distinct murmurs of her colleagues. “I heard one of the Hale Brothers is an imposter.” “Maybe it's Lucas. He looks like trouble.” “No, no…someone said it's Mr Ethan.” Ava froze. Her chest tightened. The murmurs of her colleagues were like sharp whispers in her ears, and it went on, as both she and Ethan listened from behind. His jaw clenched, he slowly inhaled trying to mask his growing anger. She stepped close enough for him to feel her presence. He didn't look at her but he exhaled. She was there with him. Just then… The elevator dinged. Lucas stepped out, hands in his pocket with a lazy smile across his face. He looked at Ethan's face, assessing the environment. It brewed trouble. “Well,” he drawled, “it seems I walked in at the perfect time.” Ethan's fist clenched. Lucas's eyes flicked towards Ava, then he looked at Ethan and his smile widened. The kind that promised a war.THE COST OF DEPENDING Ava stood still even after the woman disappeared. Her breathing was uneven and her fingers were shaking from uncertainty. The voice and the warning still repeated in her head.Ava swallowed hard. “He must never know I’m here… and you may be their next target.”Those words kept repeating in her head. Her hands went weak. She leaned against the wall, pressing her palm over her racing heart as she forced herself back into the penthouse, shutting the door with trembling fingers.“What just happened?” she whispered. She searched for her phone and scrolled through it. Notifications flooded her screen thousands of them.Dozens of comments. Her video defending Ethan was everywhere.THE EMPLOYEE SPEAKS… CAN WE BELIEVE HER?HOW TRUE IS THIS? HOW DOES SHE KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT ETHAN HALE?She scrolled again, heart pounding loudly and her hands shaking uncontrollably.LIAR.IMPOSSIBLE.HOW MUCH DID HE PAY HER?Her chest tightened. She dropped the phone on the table like i
Ava barely slept. Her mind kept replaying the previous day's event. The shock in her eyes when she saw the news online. Then she thought, what if Susan had orchestrated the humiliation? What if she had struck Ethan's unexpectedly, when he least expected it?All these thoughts raced through her mind, but she suddenly fell asleep. The morning sun slid through the curtains. Ava rubbed her eyes and pushed herself off the bed. Ethan was already awake, standing by the window in a wrinkled shirt. Facially he looked tired; from everything that had happened. “Morning,” Ava said softly. He didn't really respond, he just muttered a response. Her chest tightened. “Ethan…”“I’m fine.” He lied, voice too quiet, he didn't let her finish her sentence. She wanted to argue, to tell him she could help him fight, but he looked very distant.Like he wasn't ready or willing to say anything. He finally turned toward her, exhaustion clinging to his features. He lifted a hand toward her face, then lowe
Ethan left Lucas's condo and drove back to his penthouse. He stepped into his penthouse looking like someone who was at the verge of losing a battle. His tie was roughly undone and his hair scattered.Ava rushed to him immediately as he came fully into the room.“Ethan.” She whispered. He didn't speak. He just walked towards the couch and collapsed on it.He exhaled, a long breath that explained how tired he had been. His hands were still shaking, from the rage he barely contained at Lucas's condo.“I just need to get some rest.” He said. “Ethan…” She called him. “You'll be fine, okay?”She felt he needed to hear those words at that moment.“Thank you.” He murmured and walked to his room.THE NEXT MORNING Across the city, Susan Hale sat exquisitely in a five star restaurant, she wore a black blazer, hair styled to perfection. She was looking too elegant for a woman of her age.She dialed a number on her phone.A male voice answered from the other end. “Mrs. Hale.”“It's time,” she
Ethan didn't wait for her to finish her sentence. The moment she mentioned his stepmother, he took his car keys and stormed out of his office. He immediately drove to the Hale Mansion at a dangerous speed.THE HALE MANSIONSusan sat prestigiously in the dim lounge with a glass of wine. She wasn't surprised at all when Ethan came in furiously.“So,” she said, swirling her drink. “You finally came home to Mama.”“Do not play with her,” Ethan growled, referring to Ava.Susan's eyebrow lifted, amused. “Your secretary, Ava Sinclair? Gentle girl, isn't she? But she's just at the wrong place and at the wrong time.”She stood and approached him, her heels clicking on the floor.“She's a pawn in a dangerous game of ambition and power, Ethan. She'll get hurt, she'll cry, she'll take the fall…” she paused and tapped his shoulders lightly. “And you'll break alongside her.”Ethan's expression hardened. “If you want a fight, take it with me. Leave her out of it.”“Tsk… that's too late,” she said.
Ava’s gaze lingered on the kitchen door, as Ethan left Lucas’s condo. Her expression was unreadable, Ethan had come looking for her but she still let him leave without her. It felt like a knife driving through her heart. And of all people, she had chosen to stay with Lucas.AT ETHAN’S PENTHOUSEHe slammed the door hard once he entered, he tossed his jacket across the couch and pulled his phone immediately. He dialed her number again. She answered.“Hello…” her voice was barely calm. There was a good amount of silence that stretched between the both of them.“Ava,’ Ethan finally spoke. “Can you please come back to work at least?”She didn’t say anything. The image of her sitting somewhere, knees knocked, shrinking into themselves, lingered in his mind.“Ava?” He called her again.“...Fine.” She agreed. “I’ll resume tomorrow.”He shut his eyes, relieve washing over him like a tide.“Thank you,” he murmured. “Just… come back.”AT THE COMPANYThe next morning at the Halenito company, Ava
The city lights blurred into long streaks. Ava walked through the pedestrian lane and the thoughts of what Miranda had said still stuck to her head. She didn't pay attention to where she was going. All she knew was that she needed to go far from everything and everybody.Far away from Miranda's apartment. Far away from Ethan, she just needed to think.Ava wrapped her arms around her body like she was cold. Her breathing was unsteady, her vision blurred and the noises around her grew distant.Ava swayed, the world slipping out of her eyes, the street lights turned into streaks of golden color. Her knees buckled, finding it difficult to hold her balance, until strong, firm arms caught her.Not Ethan.“Ava.” Lucas called her.His voice sounded distant and muffled, like she was under water.Lucas's voice had a sense of panic in it. It echoed in Ava's ears. As she drifted in and out of consciousness, she didn't know that Lucas was carrying her AT LUCAS'S CONDOShe woke up on soft sheets
