Her voice didn't tremble. It was steady. Lucas blinked slowly. “Straight to business, right? You've changed.” “I didn't come here to feel nostalgic.” She folded her hands. “Answer the damn question.” He stepped closer. “I did it for you, Ava. I still love you.” He said it. Plainly with no hesitation. Her heart thudded in her ears. Those words cut her clean, not because she had wanted to hear them but she once longed to hear those words. But that girl was gone. She let out a breath. Tired and disappointed. “No, you don't. You loved the version of me that you could control; the one who would forgive you for everything you ruined.” She shook her head. “I'm not her anymore, Lucas.” He shook. His eyes flickered with irritation and amusement. “So it's my brother now?” His lips curved into a mischievous smile. “He uses people like toys and discards them at will.” “I have only business with you brother, nothing more or less.” She retorted. “You're sure about that.” “Yes, I am.” Ava struggled to admit her feelings for Ethan. “Then give me another chance to make it up to you, Ava.” Lucas begged almost on his knees. “To prove myself again.” “I'm not interested in giving you any chance to play with my heart again.” She lashed back. Lucas laughed softly. “Oh, Ava. You think refusing me would make Ethan open up to you? He doesn't let people in. I've known him all my life.” He paused. “He's only keeping you for professionalism and pleasure.” “That's enough.” Ava barked. He lifted his hands. “Relax, I'm not here to start a fight.” He stepped closer to her. “I'm not going to force into something you're not ready for. I'll give you time to accept and prepare your heart for me.” “I would never…” He reached his hand slowly into his pocket. Click. Her breath paused. He had taken a picture of her. “Lucas.” She shouted. “Don't worry. It's a good angle,” He whispered, grinning like a child who just got a new toy. “I am going to win you back, Ava Sinclair, and your precious little heart wouldn't even realize it.” He walked past her, leaving her frozen and scared. She didn't move until the door shut behind him. Lucas didn't bother wasting time. He headed straight to Ethan's office. He found him in his office, reviewing files with rolled up sleeves. “Brother man!” He beckoned on Ethan. “Countless times, you've barged into this office. This isn't a playground, Lucas.” Ethan said flatly. “I know…I know.” Lucas teased him. I met your girl today. “Lucas, stay away from that girl.” Ethan charged at Lucas. He can barely control his possessiveness towards Ava. Lucas dropped his phone on the huge mahogany desk. “Look.” He gestured to his phone. Ethan paused. The photo stared back from Lucas' phone screen. Ava's flushed cheeks. Lucas standing far too close. “What are you doing?” Ethan asked, quietly but dangerous. He smiled. “Showing you the woman, whom you won't be able to protect,” Lucas said, mimicking a feminine voice. “and portraying me, who will finally win her heart.” Sassy Lucas. Ethan didn't flinch. “Do not get her involved in your dirty games. Whatever you both had, it's history now.” “Oh! It's not history and I would so get her involved.” “Lucas!” Ethan snarled. “Oh! already falling for her, brother?” Lucas tilted back casually. “I had her once and I would have her again, right in your god damn face.” Ethan moved closer The entire room was brewing with tension so thick it could suffocate a person. “You involve her in your war, Lucas and I swear…” “You'll what?” Lucas whispered. “kill me? Become the monster our late father feared you would be?” Ethan shook. It felt like he had been thrown onto a bed full of thorns. Lucas felt satisfied and walked away. He definitely poked a pin in his butt. Ethan had never felt so weak with words for the first time in a long while. Later in the evening, at the Mansion. Ava returned and met Ethan waiting in the living room. “Why were you alone with Lucas at the hospital?" He inquired like it was his right. His voice sounded calm but his insides had been undone knowing that the girl he was growing feelings for was also wanted by his brother. Ava froze upon hearing his voice. “He was already there when I arrived.” Ava gave a plain answer. Ethan inhaled and exhaled. Like it wasn't enough to calm his intense feelings, he rubbed his forehead with his palm. He felt this instant urge to grab her, kiss her like crazy and tell her how he really felt about her. He became calm. “He showed me a picture.” Her stomach dropped. “Mr Ethan, it didn't mean anything. I didn't even know he took it.” She explained. His voice softened. “I know. I have to make sure you're safe.” “I am safe, Mr Ethan.” She said firmly. “No, you're not.” He paused. “Lucas is dangerous. He's my brother, I know him.” “You have absolutely nothing to worry about.” She added. “I have to move you to my penthouse to guarantee the safety of my employee.” Was it just about the safety of his employee? “Huh?” Ava blinked several times to grasp what he meant. He stepped closer, but not to intimidate her. It was to make her understand. “Ava,” He called her like her name was sacred. “I do not want anything to happen to you.” He paused. Her breath caught. This wasn't her boss standing in front of her at the moment. This was a man trying to be protective of her. “Why do you care?” She whispered. He wasn't ready to admit to his most obvious feeling. “Because…” Then… The door slammed open. She was standing there, looking at them. Miranda fucking Dobrev. They both turned their attention towards her and drifted from themselves. “All hail the queen of drama.” Ava muttered.THE COST OF DEPENDING Ava stood still even after the woman disappeared. Her breathing was uneven and her fingers were shaking from uncertainty. The voice and the warning still repeated in her head.Ava swallowed hard. “He must never know I’m here… and you may be their next target.”Those words kept repeating in her head. Her hands went weak. She leaned against the wall, pressing her palm over her racing heart as she forced herself back into the penthouse, shutting the door with trembling fingers.“What just happened?” she whispered. She searched for her phone and scrolled through it. Notifications flooded her screen thousands of them.Dozens of comments. Her video defending Ethan was everywhere.THE EMPLOYEE SPEAKS… CAN WE BELIEVE HER?HOW TRUE IS THIS? HOW DOES SHE KNOW SO MUCH ABOUT ETHAN HALE?She scrolled again, heart pounding loudly and her hands shaking uncontrollably.LIAR.IMPOSSIBLE.HOW MUCH DID HE PAY HER?Her chest tightened. She dropped the phone on the table like i
Ava barely slept. Her mind kept replaying the previous day's event. The shock in her eyes when she saw the news online. Then she thought, what if Susan had orchestrated the humiliation? What if she had struck Ethan's unexpectedly, when he least expected it?All these thoughts raced through her mind, but she suddenly fell asleep. The morning sun slid through the curtains. Ava rubbed her eyes and pushed herself off the bed. Ethan was already awake, standing by the window in a wrinkled shirt. Facially he looked tired; from everything that had happened. “Morning,” Ava said softly. He didn't really respond, he just muttered a response. Her chest tightened. “Ethan…”“I’m fine.” He lied, voice too quiet, he didn't let her finish her sentence. She wanted to argue, to tell him she could help him fight, but he looked very distant.Like he wasn't ready or willing to say anything. He finally turned toward her, exhaustion clinging to his features. He lifted a hand toward her face, then lowe
Ethan left Lucas's condo and drove back to his penthouse. He stepped into his penthouse looking like someone who was at the verge of losing a battle. His tie was roughly undone and his hair scattered.Ava rushed to him immediately as he came fully into the room.“Ethan.” She whispered. He didn't speak. He just walked towards the couch and collapsed on it.He exhaled, a long breath that explained how tired he had been. His hands were still shaking, from the rage he barely contained at Lucas's condo.“I just need to get some rest.” He said. “Ethan…” She called him. “You'll be fine, okay?”She felt he needed to hear those words at that moment.“Thank you.” He murmured and walked to his room.THE NEXT MORNING Across the city, Susan Hale sat exquisitely in a five star restaurant, she wore a black blazer, hair styled to perfection. She was looking too elegant for a woman of her age.She dialed a number on her phone.A male voice answered from the other end. “Mrs. Hale.”“It's time,” she
Ethan didn't wait for her to finish her sentence. The moment she mentioned his stepmother, he took his car keys and stormed out of his office. He immediately drove to the Hale Mansion at a dangerous speed.THE HALE MANSIONSusan sat prestigiously in the dim lounge with a glass of wine. She wasn't surprised at all when Ethan came in furiously.“So,” she said, swirling her drink. “You finally came home to Mama.”“Do not play with her,” Ethan growled, referring to Ava.Susan's eyebrow lifted, amused. “Your secretary, Ava Sinclair? Gentle girl, isn't she? But she's just at the wrong place and at the wrong time.”She stood and approached him, her heels clicking on the floor.“She's a pawn in a dangerous game of ambition and power, Ethan. She'll get hurt, she'll cry, she'll take the fall…” she paused and tapped his shoulders lightly. “And you'll break alongside her.”Ethan's expression hardened. “If you want a fight, take it with me. Leave her out of it.”“Tsk… that's too late,” she said.
Ava’s gaze lingered on the kitchen door, as Ethan left Lucas’s condo. Her expression was unreadable, Ethan had come looking for her but she still let him leave without her. It felt like a knife driving through her heart. And of all people, she had chosen to stay with Lucas.AT ETHAN’S PENTHOUSEHe slammed the door hard once he entered, he tossed his jacket across the couch and pulled his phone immediately. He dialed her number again. She answered.“Hello…” her voice was barely calm. There was a good amount of silence that stretched between the both of them.“Ava,’ Ethan finally spoke. “Can you please come back to work at least?”She didn’t say anything. The image of her sitting somewhere, knees knocked, shrinking into themselves, lingered in his mind.“Ava?” He called her again.“...Fine.” She agreed. “I’ll resume tomorrow.”He shut his eyes, relieve washing over him like a tide.“Thank you,” he murmured. “Just… come back.”AT THE COMPANYThe next morning at the Halenito company, Ava
The city lights blurred into long streaks. Ava walked through the pedestrian lane and the thoughts of what Miranda had said still stuck to her head. She didn't pay attention to where she was going. All she knew was that she needed to go far from everything and everybody.Far away from Miranda's apartment. Far away from Ethan, she just needed to think.Ava wrapped her arms around her body like she was cold. Her breathing was unsteady, her vision blurred and the noises around her grew distant.Ava swayed, the world slipping out of her eyes, the street lights turned into streaks of golden color. Her knees buckled, finding it difficult to hold her balance, until strong, firm arms caught her.Not Ethan.“Ava.” Lucas called her.His voice sounded distant and muffled, like she was under water.Lucas's voice had a sense of panic in it. It echoed in Ava's ears. As she drifted in and out of consciousness, she didn't know that Lucas was carrying her AT LUCAS'S CONDOShe woke up on soft sheets
