ログインHarley~
We arrived home at our little apartment shortly before midnight, my arms laden after stopping at the gas station, grocery store, and my favorite Chinese spot for takeout. One benefit of living in LA is that something is always open. Another good thing was how it felt to hear your name everywhere you went. I would miss this little town that has accepted me as one of its own, though I am anything but. After shifting everything from one arm to the other, I can fiddle with the lock that likes to stick and get the door open. My bags hit the kitchen counter with a heavy thud. The shower is calling my name, but I put away my groceries before heading to the bathroom. Afterwards, I don't even bother to blow-dry my hair; it will just get wet again by the time Rae is done, so a messy bun will do. Slipping into a T-shirt and panties, I settled down at the kitchen table, dishing myself a plate of house-fried rice, and opening my bottle of wine. My answering machine is flashing at me after I take a sip of the Merlot; I hit the play button. Benjamin, my human boyfriend of almost a year, is the first voice I hear. He always brings a smile to my face. "Hey, baby doll, I miss you. When can I see you?" Leave it up to piss on my parade, Rae! 'You know you can't keep him, Harley; you are going to wind up hurting him. Dig if you will, how will you explain that headline to your captain: 'Local DA mauled to death inside detective's apartment, film at eleven.' My eyes rolled. Rae likes to gloat when she is right! 'Yes, I know, Rae, I will try to be more careful.' Ben's last sexual encounter with us ended with me getting carried away in the heat of the moment and biting Ben. Hard. Rae stopped me before I sank my canines into him. If she hadn't, I would have marked him. 'He must have liked it.' Since she is me and I am her, I can't lie to Rae; she knows that I, too, miss the primal sexual desire that only werewolf lovers can share. My core leaks with just the thought of having a man who is all wolf inside me again. Also, I want to start a family someday, with my mate, which I could never do with Benjamin. He couldn't survive in my werewolf world, and I am not meant to exist in his. Not to mention the conversation where I tell him his child is half Lycan werewolf. Though I care for Ben very much, I know that's as deep as my feelings for him will ever grow. Only the bond of fated mates will satisfy my wolf and me. It's not Ben's fault; it's mine. I never should have started a relationship with him, but a girl gets lonely after a while. Rae growls at me as I pick up the phone, but I ignore her and call him back, telling him I was going for a run and would see him in about an hour. Maybe after I pacify her, she will behave. I didn't lie to Ben; technically, one of us will be running. We get to the Channel Islands National Park and take our usual spot in the back corner of the hiking trails parking lot. It's well past midnight now, and the only ones here other than us are a few horny teenagers. It isn't far to the treeline. I go a few feet into the trees, strip my clothes, and secure them in a low-lying branch. Rae is sitting on all-go tonight. She pulls the shift, and we take off into the night. My wolf is an exceptional beast and deserves the freedom to run whenever she pleases. It's just that I can't give it to her as a homicide detective in LA. Maybe our next place should be in the mountains. Rae is quick yet steady on her paws as she moves us through the trees and undergrowth as if she were part of the forest. It isn't long before I know where she's heading; we are going swimming! I giggle as I can smell the water through her senses. In the last few yards, we sprint toward the lake, and Rae leaps from the bank, splashing into the water. After surfacing, she glides us through the water to her favorite rock, leaps up, and stretches her stomach across the cool surface, painting. Not being able to resist, I tease her. 'Happy now?' My taunt did not bother my wolf; she purred at me, satisfied. 'Like a pig with slop!' Rae's euphoria didn't last long before she was still on the rock. I feel her go into red alert as she lifts her ears and nose to the wind. 'Harley, we aren't alone.' Rae jumps back into the water and doggie paddles for a minute as she searches the air before we head back to the bank and crawl out. She crouches close to the ground as we cross over the dried leaves and twigs as quietly as possible. 'Can you tell who, or at least what, it is?' I'm not liking this; it doesn't help to know our only protection was my Glock in the glove box, and that was quite a way away. 'It isn't human, that's for sure. It doesn't seem threatening, more curious but powerful.' Rae inches her way back to the treeline. 'We need to get back to the car unless you are ready for a fight!' Rae growls at our invisible stalker. 'It is following us. Fast!' 'To hell with the creeping, Rae! Run!' She rises from the ground and takes off like a spent bullet toward the car, stopping long enough to shift, and then I take off on foot through the parking lot. I fumble to open the car door, then reach into the glove compartment. Just as I reached my right hand inside, thunder erupted overhead and lightning struck the ground behind me, illuminating the darkness. My hands are shaking as I grip the barrel of the Glock and turn my naked form around to face the light.Harley~ Nick's care never fails to amaze me, perhaps because it's not repetitious. Only he would have moved all the things that brought me comfort from the apartment. His special touches, like candles and flowers, are a nice improvement. The room itself is an upgrade from the apartment's bedroom. Shiny, real hardwood floors and a big bay window seat make a dramatic entrance. Through the open bathroom door, the king-size bathtub had caught my eye the moment he'd sat us down. Images of Nick, me, and bubbles filling it have me nestling into his chest. His scent draws me in with an irresistible pull. "Thank you, Wolfman." I turn my head and kiss his pecs. "I can't take all the credit; Becky helped. We wanted you to feel at home." "Anywhere you are is home to me." One kiss leads to another. Nick ran his hands along my back, leaving my skin a burning trail from his touch. "I've been thinking about what Seth said, and I want to hold the press conference." Zeek rumbled in his chest as
Nick~ We both looked at Harley; I wanted to question her, but she wasn't looking so good; I know that look! She slapped my chest. "Bathroom, now!" I scoop her up; one of her arms goes around my neck, and the other hand covers her mouth. Becky opens the front door, steps aside, and points to the half-bath off the living room. Harley is squirming in my arms to get to the toilet as we enter. With her in front of me, I drop to my knees just in time to pull her hair back. When there's nothing left inside her, she leans back into me with tears in her eyes, out of breath. "Nick, I'm sorry, but there's nothing Ben can do; I agreed to the test once it was safe. He should know who Nicoletta's father is, too." "No, Harler, Kyle is right about Ben; he could prove to be a danger to us. What about exposure? Our little one doesn't like to be spied on. Imagine what she will do when they poke at her with needles?" She drops her eyes to the floor, and her voice is almost inaudible. "I hadn't thou
Nick~ Our black SUVs pull out of the hospital parking lot. More media vans waited on the street, and they pulled in behind us as we passed. Now, a caravan of five heads east through downtown LA. We take the US 395 exit and catch another gear. Harley has remained quiet with her head resting on my shoulder. Once her hand returned to its human form, I laced our fingers together. It's hotter than the Fourth of July on a tin roof in the back of the SUV. My voice was sharp when I hit the two-way and asked the driver to turn on the back vents. It didn't matter because it worked, and the AC came to life with a swoosh. Harley's hair blew back as I adjusted the vent for her, but she didn't speak. 'Just be patient with her, Nick.' 'I'm doing my best, Zeek.' 'We also need to help her get a hold of her powers before they get stronger.' 'Seeing as how she has to use those powers on us, I'd say that's an excellent idea. Though the how is a mystery, other than trial and error.' Wh
Nick~ Shelia walks away while Zeek is urging me out the door, but it's unnecessary; I'm already gone. The cards go under my arm, and my eyes go to the door. My boots scuffing over the carpet and the glass doors closing behind me sit right with my soul. Salt air and a south breeze surrounded me coming out of the station, ushering me out to freedom. On my way across the parking lot, I'm still trying to connect with Harley. I'm in the car, pulling out, by the time she accepts my call. Harley's voice comes through with a brave front, but it's the underlying shakiness that she can't hide. 'Wolfman?' 'Yes, Amante.' 'I got my discharge instructions.' 'We can go?' 'Yes, we can. Where are you?' 'Leaving the station. Are you ok?' 'Why wouldn't I be?' 'Harley, I know Ben was there.' 'Can we talk about that later, Nick? Hurry, please; I'm ready to go home.' And just like that, she shut me out. Like an old-time operator pulling the plug on a wire. One hand tightened on
Nick~ Captain Howard called me three more times before I could get out of the hospital. Once I'm settled in the car, I connect the Bluetooth and accept number four. He informs me that Belinda had a match on what killed Steve. I'm supposed to meet them in the morgue; 'them' includes District Attorney Ben, of course, he would be there. 'You need to keep it cool, Nick. We know Harley and Rae belong to us; it doesn't matter what Ben thinks anymore.' 'I know, Zeek, you just remember you said that.' This is not what I expect to be doing today, not by a long shot. My intention was to drop off the files at the station and get back to Harley. Had I gained my objective, it wouldn't have been very 'FBI-ish,' but I had a plan for that too. Three middle fingers with a string of curses, two forced merges with honking horns, and a couple more close calls get me to the station. Seth's car is here unexpectedly, but it's a relief. The station gets quiet as I walk in, and all eyes are on
Kyle~ For quite some time now, I've been standing in the middle of Harley's bedroom without the first clue of what to bring her other than the basics. Becky's voice is high-pitched and fast when she calls for me, insisting that I return to the hospital. The beach bag from the bottom of Harley's closet will have to do. After filling it with one of everything, I take the stairs at top speed and get to my car. My hand grips the wheel as I start the engine, heading back to the hospital. Becky tells me the DA is there. 'What does he want?' 'A pertinent test. You didn't tell me it was possibly not Nick's baby.' 'That's because I didn't know. Has she called for Nick?' 'Not that I've seen. I'd assume not, since Ben has already taken him to jail once. Did you know that?!' 'Yes, I'm on the way.' Lucky for me, there's a parking spot on the ground level. A bit narrow, but it will do. Killing the engine, I grab Harley's bag from the passenger seat, and it's all ass and elbows acr
