We arrived home at our little apartment shortly before midnight, my arms laden after stopping at the gas station, grocery store, and my favorite Chinese spot for takeout. One benefit of living in LA is that something is always open. Another good thing was how it felt to hear your name everywhere you went. I would miss this little town that has accepted me as one of its own, though I am anything but. After shifting everything from one arm to the other, I can fiddle with the lock that likes to stick and get the door open. My bags hit the kitchen counter with a heavy thud. The shower is calling my name, but I put away my groceries before heading to the bathroom. Afterwards, I don't even bother to blow-dry my hair; it will just get wet again by the time Rae is done, so a messy bun will do. Slipping into a T-shirt and panties, I settled down at the kitchen table, dishing myself a plate of house-fried rice, and opening my bottle of wine. My answering machine is flashing at me after I take a sip of the Merlot; I hit the play button. Benjamin, my human boyfriend of almost a year, is the first voice I hear. He always brings a smile to my face. "Hey, baby doll, I miss you. When can I see you?" Leave it up to piss on my parade, Rae! 'You know you can't keep him, Harley; you are going to wind up hurting him. Dig if you will, how will you explain that headline to your captain: 'Local DA mauled to death inside detective's apartment, film at eleven.' My eyes rolled. Rae likes to gloat when she is right! 'Yes, I know, Rae, I will try to be more careful.' Ben's last sexual encounter with us ended with me getting carried away in the heat of the moment and biting Ben. Hard. Rae stopped me before I sank my canines into him. If she hadn't, I would have marked him. 'He must have liked it.' Since she is me and I am her, I can't lie to Rae; she knows that I, too, miss the primal sexual desire that only werewolf lovers can share. My core leaks with just the thought of having a man who is all wolf inside me again. Also, I want to start a family someday, with my mate, which I could never do with Benjamin. He couldn't survive in my werewolf world, and I am not meant to exist in his. Not to mention the conversation where I tell him his child is half Lycan werewolf. Though I care for Ben very much, I know that's as deep as my feelings for him will ever grow. Only the bond of fated mates will satisfy my wolf and me. It's not Ben's fault; it's mine. I never should have started a relationship with him, but a girl gets lonely after a while. Rae growls at me as I pick up the phone, but I ignore her and call him back, telling him I was going for a run and would see him in about an hour. Maybe after I pacify her, she will behave. I didn't lie to Ben; technically, one of us will be running. We get to the Channel Islands National Park and take our usual spot in the back corner of the hiking trails parking lot. It's well past midnight now, and the only ones here other than us are a few horny teenagers. It isn't far to the treeline. I go a few feet into the trees, strip my clothes, and secure them in a low-lying branch. Rae is sitting on all-go tonight. She pulls the shift, and we take off into the night. My wolf is an exceptional beast and deserves the freedom to run whenever she pleases. It's just that I can't give it to her as a homicide detective in LA. Maybe our next place should be in the mountains. Rae is quick yet steady on her paws as she moves us through the trees and undergrowth as if she were part of the forest. It isn't long before I know where she's heading; we are going swimming! I giggle as I can smell the water through her senses. In the last few yards, we sprint toward the lake, and Rae leaps from the bank, splashing into the water. After surfacing, she glides us through the water to her favorite rock, leaps up, and stretches her stomach across the cool surface, painting. Not being able to resist, I tease her. 'Happy now?' My taunt did not bother my wolf; she purred at me, satisfied. 'Like a pig with slop!' Rae's euphoria didn't last long before she was still on the rock. I feel her go into red alert as she lifts her ears and nose to the wind. 'Harley, we aren't alone.' Rae jumps back into the water and doggie paddles for a minute as she searches the air before we head back to the bank and crawl out. She crouches close to the ground as we cross over the dried leaves and twigs as quietly as possible. 'Can you tell who, or at least what, it is?' I'm not liking this; it doesn't help to know our only protection was my Glock in the glove box, and that was quite a way away. 'It isn't human, that's for sure. It doesn't seem threatening, more curious but powerful.' Rae inches her way back to the treeline. 'We need to get back to the car unless you are ready for a fight!' Rae growls at our invisible stalker. 'It is following us. Fast!' 'To hell with the creeping, Rae! Run!' She rises from the ground and takes off like a spent bullet toward the car, stopping long enough to shift, and then I take off on foot through the parking lot. I fumble to open the car door, then reach into the glove compartment. Just as I reached my right hand inside, thunder erupted overhead and lightning struck the ground behind me, illuminating the darkness. My hands are shaking as I grip the barrel of the Glock and turn my naked form around to face the light.Nick~ Given that Harley tossed and turned most of the night. I'm surprised to wake and find her missing from my arms. A quick scan of the room finds her sitting in the bay window, knees pulled up to her chest, quietly staring out. She'd moved aside the heavy drapes, and in the warm morning light, she glowed. "Harley, honey, you ok?" She glances over her shoulder. "Yeah, just thinking." "It looks deep," I prop up on my elbow and push the blanket away. "What's on your mind, Amante?" "Having Melinda bind our powers so we don't become the next addition to 'freaks like us.'" "You can be my freak anytime," I waggled my eyebrows at her with a wink, but my antics aren't working. "Last night wasn't your fault." "But still it happened because I couldn't control it." "Would you please come here?" She does; her bare feet pad across the floor. My old t-shirt never looked so good, though it's down to her knees. Once she's snuggled under the blanket, close, I kiss her forehead. "You
Nick~ Harley's body remains stiff beside mine as I lead her out of our room. Down the hall, she's dragging her feet across the carpet runner while her breath gets shallow. Enough of this. I stop us and wrap my arms around her. "What's going on, Amante? Are you having second thoughts? It's ok if you are." "Of course not," she traced my jaw with her fingers. "Facing these people again isn't as easy as I thought, that's all." "It will be different this time, and on our terms. Harley, I trust Seth." "If you do, then I do too," she tossed her hair over her shoulder and linked her arm through mine. "Let's get on with it," she took a deep breath. That's my girl! We continued into the den, where everyone was waiting for us. Kyle had two desks and chairs moved together, facing each other in front of the fireplace. The three newsmen already sat at one of them, locking their eyes on us. So what if we're late for the party? One man fiddles with his pen, and they all have notepads. Seth is
Harley~ How do I let myself get into these situations? Where Nick is concerned, I'm hopeless to deny him any request. And he's right, I need to get a handle on myself if I intend to make things different for Etta. The grass is wet, so I slip off my sandals and barefoot it beside him across the lawn. It may look inviting, but the afternoon sunshine has the soaked greensward as hot as the devil's playground.I'm thankful for the breeze that surrounds us, and I wonder, 'Did I do that?' My chest is pounding by the time we reach the crepe myrtle trees at the back of the lot, where Nick has readied a makeshift target range. He steadies me in front of him. "What do you think?" My hand went to my chest as my jaw dropped. Nick had arranged the various water bottles he and Sofie had dragged out of the house in a row, from smallest to largest. Each bottle had a name: the 5-gallon water-cooler tank he'd chosen to be Ian. All the way to a mini water bottle, I was sure belonged to Kylie, that
Nick~ Harley is none the wiser as I slip back into the room. I'm surprised, given the screech the oak door made as I eased it closed behind me. At the end of the bed, I shed my jeans, laying them across the ornate wooden trunk. There's still too much light in here for the Princess; I go over to the window and pull the tie-backs loose. Thick maroon blackout drapes give a swoosh as they come together. A seashell night light on the wall comes to life in the darkness; I hadn't noticed that last night. She turns as I throw back the covers with a groan, causing me to freeze mid-air before lowering my body onto the bed. It's only a moment before she squirms herself back into my arms, taking a deep breath. Soon, the bump will separate us, so I pull her as close to me as I can. 'Harley needs a cram session on power control before this interview, Nick.' With a sigh, I snuggled my face into her hair. 'Agreed, Z, we at least need to know what we're up against.' 'How's Rae doing?'
Kyle~ We distract Kylie from the ball and take to the patio's sun chairs while she plays in the sprinklers instead. Bright sunlight catches the water droplets, creating a rainbow effect. Kylie is doing her best to catch them, her giggles filling the air. With a grin, I look over at my Luna. I reach for her and settle her onto my lap, as my heart skips a beat. It's a wonder how, after all our years together, she still gets to me. Her strawberry blonde hair lights up in the sun as the wind catches it. Light freckles across her nose dance as she crinkles it at me. "Have I told you how much I love you?" I kissed her freckled nose. "Yes, but I've never tired of it." Her hair had blown across her face, and I tucked a strand behind her ear. "I've been wanting to ask you about having another baby with me." That drew her attention, causing her face to tighten and her eyes to narrow on me. "What happened to waiting until you were Alpha?" "I've changed my mind. Being here with Harle
Ian~ Where is Toby? Even worse than being ignored is knowing that without my wolf, there ain't shit I can do about it. With a string of curses, I cross the room in two strides; the cellarette doesn't stand a chance as I punch the glass door. Blood runs down my hand, and I shake it off before grabbing the bottle of brandy. The fact that I had to call him on his cell rather than use the Pack mind link should have been a clue that something was amiss. The brandy goes down smooth, and my pacing resumes. 'Colt, you son-of-bitch, you'd better heal me!' Nothing! My eyes locked on opening the door. "Where the hell have you been?!" Toby shrugged his shoulders. "I was tying up some loose ends. What's got you so wound up?" The urge to smack him upside the head is strong, but I round my desk and flop down in my chair instead. "Lycan, you're bleeding." "You think I don't fucking know?" After getting a handkerchief from my desk drawer, I slammed it shut. "Why are you bleeding? C
Nick~ The only positive thing about being in police custody is that the press is kept at bay as the officers get me out of the car. The door behind me closes, and I'm led into a part of the station I've never seen before. Inside, three cops surround me as they rotate the cuffs from my back to the
Kyle~ My sister looks like she's been through hell and back. Not a patch of skin can I see that isn't either bruised or bandaged. If Steve weren't already dead, he would be by now. There's no doubt, I stand behind Nick one hundred percent on that. Harley doesn't deserve any of this. From day one,
Nick~ 'Nick, we gotta get out of here!' 'Zeek, not even you can get us out of here.' There's nothing left to do but pace the floor, and I do for a long while. If the cops were aiming to create an atmosphere that would deter a return, they hit the mark. I'm sure as hell not coming back! The th
Nick~ The driver turns on the lights and sirens as we haul ass toward downtown LA. He makes it a quick trip to Providence St. John's Medical Center, but it feels like hours. Harley coughs up some blood, which causes palpitations in my chest. The EMT tells me it's not as bad as it looks, but I don'
