LOGINHarley~
Gripping the gun in one hand with my finger still on the trigger, I used my other hand to shield my eyes from the flash. As it dimmed, I two-handed the barrel again and tried to focus on the female I could see inside the extraordinary white light. Although she was transparent, I could still make out her features. My eyes widen and my mouth drops open as I stare at her in awe, thinking she must be a goddess. On her head and waist, she wore a crown and belt of what appeared to be controlled water. The thunderbolt disappeared entirely, and the darkness reclaimed the night as she stepped off it. The goddess came towards me. "That won't work on me, Harley," she said, referring to the gun I was still pointing at her. "Look, lady, I don't want to kill you. Who are you, and what do you want?" My voice cracked from my disbelief about what I had just seen with my own eyes. How did she know my name? She laughed as she took another step towards me. "My name is Lauren. You are just as beautiful as I imagined, and you look so much like your mother." I searched my memories but couldn't put her name and face together. Still, I couldn't deny there was something very familiar about her. "How do you know my mother?" I lowered the gun, having a strong feeling that she was correct, and it wouldn't affect her. "Your mother was part of our Sauther Lake clan before she mated with your father. Was it not a hailstorm that helped you escape Ian's pack?" How in the holiest of hell could she know that?! I thought. "My mother never spoke of you or this clan. Trust me, I would remember, and you didn't answer my question. What do you want?!" "Harley, I have no intention of harming you. I'm here to warn you that Ian knows where you are." 'She is being truthful, or at least she believes it.' "You should learn to listen to your wolf; she will prove to be a wise source in your future." Just great, I can almost see Rae gloating. "How can you hear my wolf, and how could you know any of this?" "I've been watching over you since your mother's death. It was I who caused the storm, and I also keep close watch on Ian. He's hired a bounty hunter to come after you, and there isn't much time." My heart started pounding in my chest as the notion sank in that my father had found me. I don't want to believe it. "Even if my mother was part of your clan, that doesn't explain my connection with you." I stared at her, fighting back the unwanted tears. "Why would you be interested in saving me?" "Do not fear, Harley. You, my dear, are one of the chosen few. We, the Sauther Lake guardians, are a collective of beings united in body and mind with a common goal. My goal at the moment is to protect you. It's time to come home now, Harley. You don't belong here in the human world. The sooner you embrace your true self, the easier you can free yourself of Ian once and for all." I couldn't make head or tail of the riddles she spoke, though she had raised my curiosity. "Say, if I wanted to 'go home?" I smirked. "Where do I find Sauther Lake?" I hurried to the tree to retrieve my clothes, realizing I was still naked as the day I was born. "All you have to do is follow your heart home. You have many powers inside you besides the ability not to forget, powerful ones, but I can see you aren't ready to leave just yet. Whatever is holding you here, you need to be released soon." She turned away and raised her hand to the sky, and the lightning bolt came back down. "I won't be far. If you believe nothing else this night, believe you are in danger. Your power is in the wind." She steps back into the bolt and is gone as quickly as she came. I wasted no time finishing dressing and jumped into my car. As we left the park, I flattened the gas pedal to the floor and gunned it, squealing tires on the asphalt. I kept looking in the rearview, like I expected to see her lightning bolt riding ass behind me. My head is spinning, as my mind is still in compute mode, though I know what I saw and heard. Then I remembered I was not the only eyewitness. However, she had remained unusually quiet. 'Rae, what do you know?' 'I know nothing for sure. My memories don't exceed yours. If our mother were part of Lauren's clan, I wouldn't know. It's more of a feeling.' She sounds just as conflicted as I feel. 'What if we have a home and a family after all? Lauren said,' We are guardians of what and whom?' 'She didn't exactly give me directions to the place, Rae,' I grunted as I gripped the steering wheel. 'Follow your heart home; your power is in the wind,' I repeated with a huff. 'What the hell does that even mean?' 'Maybe you should make some time to see Melinda. She could help us see what Lauren meant.' Melinda Dancing Feather is a good friend of ours, a shaman healer, and a craft practitioner of the Chusmash Native American tribe. Her specialty is vision quests; she says she uses spirit guides passed down from her ancestors. 'I will think about it.' I pull back into my apartment's parking lot. Benjamin is here. I was relieved I didn't want to be alone tonight. 'Please behave, Raelynn.' I get to my apartment, open the door, and walk into every girl's dream. Ben has outdone himself once again. He has soft music, low lights, flowers, and champagne waiting for me. "Ben?" I called him. "In here." He said from my bedroom.Nick~ Somewhere around daybreak......' Nick! Wake up!' Zeek's voice clawed at the back of my skull, sharp and frantic. 'What the hell, Z? I groaned internally, my mind still thick with honeyed sleep. 'Blood. Harley's.' My heart didn't just pound; it thrashed against my ribs like a trapped bird as I surged upright. The sheets were a grisly, sodden mess, the copper tang of iron filling the air. With shaking hands, I patted down her limbs, searching for a jagged cut or a wound. Nothing. Her skin was pale and cool, her eyes locked in a deep, unresponsive heaviness. 'The bleeding is internal, Nick. Wake her up. Now.' 'Ok, I choked out, sliding my arms under her and pulling her limp weight into my lap. The source became clear as fresh blood spread over us from between her thighs. "Harley? Harley, baby, look at me." Panic was a cold pressure in my throat. This shouldn't be happening; pregnant women do not bleed, certainly not with this much volume. Her eyelids fluttered, th
Nick~ There's not much left of the pie, so I spoon the leftovers into a Tupperware and put them in the fridge. Harley and I rinse the dishes, put them in the washer, and clean up our mess. It's hovering around midnight when we strip on the back porch. Then I flip the indoor switch and throw juice to the jacuzzi. Spa lights glow under its cover, and the hum of the jets vibrates through the deck, beckoning us. We step out into the night and cross to another platform to reach the hot tub. A strong whiff of the cowboy cologne shrubs growing around the lake wafts past as I lift the cover. My parents must have been here recently; there are still towels inside the warmer. Harley's body glowed in the moonlight, but her growing breasts and belly took the spotlight for me. Goosebumps are forming on her arms, so I lead her down the steps and into the bubbling water. We settled on the wrap-around bench, and naturally, my arm goes to rest on the side behind her. The velvet sky was thi
Nick~ Out front, the cracked ceramic gnomes still stand guard in the garden, their painted faces chipped by years of autumn rains and summer heat. Inside the house, the air still smells faintly of lavender, and my parents just as it did the last time I was here. With Harley settled inside, I go back out to unload the car. A few minutes later, our bags hit the sofa with a thud, and I took the cooler into the kitchen. When I return to the living room, Harley has moved to the stone hearth above the dormant fireplace. She's holding a framed photo of me at age nine, caught mid-air over the clear water beneath the pier, and smiles down at the little boy in the image. "You were a cutie," she says, setting the photo back on the mantel's polished wood grain and picking up another photo of Sean and me. "My mother couldn't put the camera down," I say, a light chuckle dying in my throat. "I swear I jumped off that damn pier fifty times before she got that shot." "This is Sean?" She rubs h
Harley~ Nick's argon oil scent calms me as I breathe him in. "What do you think about us going away for the weekend? We could relax, unwind, and regroup before court on Monday." My throat seized in protest as I tried swallowing down the sharp taste of bile. I'm not ready to face Ben. "You and I alone in the woods could get us into trouble." "I'm hoping so," he growls as he squeezes my waist. He always knows how to hook me. "Did you have something in mind?" "Un-hun, there's a lake a couple of hours from here that our parents took us to every year. It's very private, and we have a cabin right on the lakefront. It isn't magical, but we could make our own." "We sure can, Wolfman." "Great," he pulls back and kisses my forehead. "If we leave soon, we can see the sunset over the lake." I'm ushered out the back door, where Becky, Kyle, and Kylie enjoy the salty breeze on the lanai. The concrete and chairs are now in the shade of the house, as the sun has passed overhead. He sets me
Nick~ Given that Harley tossed and turned most of the night. I'm surprised to wake and find her missing from my arms. A quick scan of the room finds her sitting in the bay window, knees pulled up to her chest, quietly staring out. She'd moved aside the heavy drapes, and in the warm morning light, she glowed. "Harley, honey, you ok?" She glances over her shoulder. "Yeah, just thinking." "It looks deep," I prop up on my elbow and push the blanket away. "What's on your mind, Amante?" "Having Melinda bind our powers so we don't become the next addition to 'freaks like us.'" "You can be my freak anytime," I waggled my eyebrows at her with a wink, but my antics aren't working. "Last night wasn't your fault." "But still it happened because I couldn't control it." "Would you please come here?" She does; her bare feet pad across the floor. My old t-shirt never looked so good, though it's down to her knees. Once she's snuggled under the blanket, close, I kiss her forehead. "You
Nick~ Harley's body remains stiff beside mine as I lead her out of our room. Down the hall, she's dragging her feet across the carpet runner while her breath gets shallow. Enough of this. I stop us and wrap my arms around her. "What's going on, Amante? Are you having second thoughts? It's ok if you are." "Of course not," she traced my jaw with her fingers. "Facing these people again isn't as easy as I thought, that's all." "It will be different this time, and on our terms. Harley, I trust Seth." "If you do, then I do too," she tossed her hair over her shoulder and linked her arm through mine. "Let's get on with it," she took a deep breath. That's my girl! We continued into the den, where everyone was waiting for us. Kyle had two desks and chairs moved together, facing each other in front of the fireplace. The three newsmen already sat at one of them, locking their eyes on us. So what if we're late for the party? One man fiddles with his pen, and they all have notepads. Seth is
Nick~ Well, sir, imagine that-a wild animal took Steve out. Trying to contain my chest poking out or the vindicated smile on my face was pointless. So I boast instead, looking across the desk at Ben, whose wind has left right out of his sails. Poor thing, it's got to be hard when you see all your
Nick~ Another stop at the florist and gift shops downstairs gets me headed for the elevators with my arms loaded down. Inside Harley's room, I set the pink elephant and vase of lilies on the bedside table. Kyle's eyes go wide from the recliner where he's kicked back. He pushes down the footrest
Nick~Howard groaned and rubbed his hand over his face. "I've known Harley for a while. She's as tough as nails; if anyone can bounce back, it's her."'Not without her wolf,' I thought. Harley is right on about her recovery and the fate of our pup without Raelynn. "Either way, I'm going to ask her
Harley~ When Kyle announces his intention to leave, it feels like he flipped the switch on an electric current running through my skin. The hum running through me has me fidgeting with a loose string on my hospital gown. 'Breath in, breathe out.' Easier said than done, while my lungs are burning
