Chapter 2

Autor: Perfect Timing
The call ended. Within three seconds, the restroom door was kicked open with a bang.

Mabel stormed in furiously. "Stephanie, did you make them change the profit split? It was 50-50 before, and now it's 70-30! The chairman said if I can't close this deal, they're docking 500 thousand from my commission!

"Why don't you just die, you fucking bitch?"

Even Elliot came rushing over. "Stephanie, get over there right now and apologize to the client! Do you even realize how much the company stands to lose with a 70-30 split? You're siding with outsiders against your own company! This is atrocious!"

Watching him lose his temper, I quietly did the math in my head. If the deal had gone through under the original 50-50 terms, his commission would've been around three million dollars.

Now that the split had changed to 70-30, the company's profit margin would be slashed by at least half. Even if they managed to sign the contract, the board would definitely hold someone accountable.

After all the cuts and adjustments, Elliot alone would lose a full million from this deal. That amount was enough for the down payment on an apartment downtown.

But… what did any of that have to do with me?

I crossed my arms and leaned against the doorframe, mimicking Elliot's earlier words. "What proof do you have that I was the one who told them to change the profit split? Without evidence, this is slander.

"Besides, I thought the company cares about results more than the process. Whether the deal gets signed or not depends on capability."

He stared at me in shock.

My voice stayed calm. "That's what you taught me earlier. Right, Mr. Manson?"

Elliot's face flushed red from being cornered, but he couldn't force out a single rebuttal.

I walked back toward my desk. Before I could even sit down, Mabel suddenly burst out of the restroom in tears. Her sobbing instantly gathered the entire office's attention.

"What's wrong with Mabel? Why is she crying?"

Mabel choked on her tears, then, in the very next second, dropped to her knees. "I've let everyone down. I'm so sorry. I'll do everything to make it up to you all.

"It was my mentor who insisted on forcing the client to change the profit split. The chairman said that if the deal changes from 50-50 to 70-30, everyone's year-end bonus might get cut…

"So, please, don't blame my mentor, Ms. Stone. This is all my fault for not signing the contract sooner."

The coworkers stared at me in disbelief. Every single gaze was filled with resentment.

"What the hell is wrong with you, Stephanie? Are you trying to get everyone's year-end bonus wiped out?"

"You couldn't close the deal yourself, so you sabotaged Mabel's chance, too. Not only that, but you dragged the entire department down with you. Are you insane?"

As the entire office turned on me, Mabel curled her lips into a subtle smile. Still wearing that fragile, resilient act, she wiped away her tears. "Guys, calm down. I actually have a solution."

Supported by a few coworkers, she slowly stood up and casually dropped the hint. "As long as I ask my dad for help, this deal will go through."

At that, everyone's eyes lit up.

Joseph was the first to rush over and grab her hands. "Mabel, are you serious? Your dad's the chairman of the client company?"

She smiled shyly. "What can I say? My dad spoils me a lot."

At the drop of a hat, a group immediately gathered around her.

"Mabel, you're really something else. Unlike Stephanie, who went screaming in the restroom like some lunatic just because she couldn't close a deal."

"I know, right? Stephanie can't do anything right. Good thing she wasn't the one meeting the client, or she'd probably have even signed away her rights."

The office burst into laughter. Their gazes shifted toward me, layered with ridicule, contempt, and curiosity. I found it almost amusing.

"You said the chairman is your father, but if I remember correctly, his last name is Stone. Explain to me how you took the last name 'Smith' from him."

When Mabel first joined the company, she was just a junior college graduate. She was assigned to me as an intern under my supervision. She had been at the company for less than three months, and she didn't even know Joseph before that. Yet, the pregnancy she was carrying clearly didn't look like it was only three months along.I paused for a moment. Mabel was pregnant, so it made her eligible for medical parole, temporarily exempting her from serving time.During her prenatal checkup, Joseph followed along the entire time with a dark expression."Joe, this is the product of our love," Mabel said softly. "You can't let the baby see you looking at them with disgust."He clenched his fists and immediately stopped the doctor. "We're not doing the checkup anymore. I demand amniocentesis. I want proof that this baby is mine before I exercise any paternal rights."She panicked immediately. She wanted to refuse, but couldn't because the police officers were all around. His request was le

"Stephanie… What do you mean by that?" Joseph asked. Before I could answer, Mabel suddenly shouted, "That's right, Joe. I'm pregnant with your baby. You must take responsibility for me. You don't want this baby growing up without a mother, do you?"He was taken aback. "But I used protection. How could—"Only then did he realize he had made a slip-up. He instantly clamped his mouth shut, but it was already too late. I looked at Joseph with nothing but disappointment, then turned and left with Matthew. The impersonator was taken straight to prison. Elliot was also handcuffed for illegally helping Mabel steal credit for my work.Right outside the company building, Elliot no longer looked as arrogant as before. "Stephanie, I was blind. I clearly misjudged people. I'm so, so sorry. Please, I'm begging you, show mercy. Let me off this once, huh?"I have elderly parents to support and a newborn child at home. My baby is only a month old. I can't lose this job—I really, really can't. If

At one point, Mabel realized a crowd had formed around her."Hey, doesn't she look like that woman from the 'local' section?""They look the same. Look at how wild she is.""Bro, it's literally her."An uneasy feeling rose in her chest. She quickly grabbed her phone. The second she saw the trending posts, her mind went blank, and a loud buzz filled her head.Countless people online were sharing and searching for her private photos. Her explicit pictures had already spread everywhere across the internet."You! You're the bitch who leaked them!" Mabel said to me, then turned to the impersonator like a madwoman. "No, it was you, you animal!"Before she could touch him, her wrist was seized. "Don't forget. Your mother already sold you to me. You've got all this energy? Save it for the bedroom."Now that all pretenses were gone, he openly hurled vulgar insults at her.Mabel covered her ears and suddenly dropped to her knees beside Joseph. "Joe, you were the one who said I could rep

"How did this footage get recovered?" Mabel screamed.I let out a cold laugh. The old security guard at the company entrance lived right next door to my family. He practically watched me grow up.Mabel stared at me with eyes like saucers. "I knew it. All of this had been your setup! Guys, did you hear all that? Stephanie knows the security guard! They're obviously working together! This footage has to be edited! It's fake!"Watching her spiral into hysteria, I found her antics comical. Even with doom staring her in the face, she still refused to admit her fault.I waved casually. Immediately, Matthew called in a top-tier hacker to assist the police with verification. Less than ten minutes later, the results came back."The footage is authentic, with no signs of editing or tampering."I turned to Mabel. "You hired someone to impersonate my dad, stole my project proposal, and forced me to sign away my profit share. That's quite a list, don't you think? Maybe your next move should

"Yeah. If you're upset, don't blame us. Blame Mabel instead. She's the one who lied to everyone."Mabel's voice turned pitiful again. "I-I don't understand what you're talking about. My dad doesn't even have a senior secretary like him. He's an impersonator!"She thought this would still win her support, but the moment she finished speaking, the room went quiet in a tense way.Everyone looked at her as if she were an idiot. Even Joseph looked visibly unsettled as he stared at her.Mabel's voice broke. "Joe, why are you stepping back? You don't believe me either, do you? I'm telling the truth! Why would I ever lie to you, Joe?"Watching his expression shift from avoidance to outright panic, I couldn't help but chortle.Matthew was responsible for all major corporate contract signings. He handled some of the most high-value accounts in all of Jambrough.People in the industry even called him the walking ATM. Any company that secured a contract through him could easily generate bil

Mabel was the first to panic. "Joe, what's going on? Didn't you steal the original proposal? Why does it still have Stephanie's name on it?"I couldn't help but laugh. Did they seriously think that just by having a few meals with the client, they could land a three-billion-dollar contract? The entire project proposal was developed under Dad's direct supervision. In his office, I had already handed him the original finalized version. What Mabel and Joseph stole was just a backup copy. It had no legal validity whatsoever.Joseph turned to me, his gaze turning hostile. "Stephanie, stealing the original proposal and illegally changing the authorship is a criminal offense. Believe it or not, I can call the cops on you right now!"I almost laughed out loud. So, they were aware it was illegal after all. Breaking the law knowingly just made it worse.I raised my phone. "Go ahead. Call them. Let's see who gets arrested when they show up."The moment I raised my phone, Joseph panicked. He
