Nick's father's eyes landed on me and flared with rage. He jabbed a finger in my direction and spat, "It's you again—always bringing us bad luck! I knew you and my Nick were never meant to be together! You caused trouble again and got Nick arrested?"

Seeing his parents, Nick acted as if he'd found salvation. He shrieked, "Dad! Mom! Help me! Katie set me up. She's trying to ruin my life!"

Nick's mother lunged at me, her hand raised to strike—only for Jake to clamp her wrist in a cold, iron grip.

"Madam," Jake said without a trace of warmth, "you'd better confirm the facts first."

"Facts?" Nick's mother raged on. "The fact is, my son was ruined by that pampered heiress! How dare she treat an honest boy like that! Just because you're rich, you think you can bully people like us?"

Her tirade drew murmurs from the growing crowd.
