Chapter 21 The Beginning of a Journey

Author: Day Torres
The kind old man gave them his best room and jotted down their dinner order. Liam collapsed onto the bed like a plow ox, and Maxine stopped the innkeeper just before he walked away.

"Do you know if there's any big-vessel captain on the island?" she asked.

"Of course! Local pride—Kendrick Webster!"

The old man chatted cheerfully with Maxine, and within minutes, she already had a way to contact Captain Webster.

As soon as they were alone, Liam peeled off his coat and headed to the bathroom.

"Maaaaaxxxxxx!" he shouted, and she came running in with a broom.

"Alright, where's the cockroach I need to kill?" she asked. Liam just shook his head, still wondering where the hell she got a broom that fast.

"You brought us to the gates of hell," he said, pointing at what looked like a gaping black hole nearly two meters wide in the middle of the bathroom.

"That's the bathtub, you idiot!" she snapped. "With this cold, the water must be boiling, thank God. So fill it up, I'm diving in

Not even three hours had passed before they were already arriving at the airport. For Maxine, getting on a plane was nothing new—but boarding a private jet this luxurious? That was rare. She felt a little out of place, especially when she saw that the executive jet even had a bedroom with a full bed. The flight was long, but Maxine's curiosity about all of Liam's work outside the company kept her from staying quiet. She asked him everything: where the donations came from, where they were sent, how he bought them, how he ensured they reached their destinations, what types of supplies were included… The list was endless—and Liam answered every question enthusiastically, because it was a part of his work that truly mattered to him. "Wow… that's a lot of money," Maxine murmured, realizing Liam had been running this system in different parts of the world for years. "If you hadn't donated all that, you could've bought yourself a small country by now." "And what would I do with a smal

Liam hesitated for a moment before answering, but there was no point hiding something she was bound to find out sooner or later. "Eastern Euridia has amazing commercial ports. The main one is Novenhrad, which gives us access to Karevsk without having to sail halfway around the world," he said, pointing to the map. "But there are also other ports that open the way to the poorer countries in the region. That's where we drop off non-conflict materials as donations: school supplies, clothes, vaccines, canned food." Maxine felt a lump rise in her throat as she listened, staring at him like he was a little caterpillar transforming into a butterfly right before her eyes. "Are you serious?" she whispered, stunned. "I thought this was all just about money…" "Oh, it is, make no mistake!" Liam sighed, clearly impatient. "All of this is about money. What people don't understand is that in order to give, you have to earn first! I like helping people—it's honestly a big part of what I do wit

The first time Joseph Duff, a prestigious trade magnate and holder of the port license for Carrisbay called in the middle of the night to reschedule their meeting to noon, Maxine noticed he sounded nervous. But when he called again to push the meeting back even further, she started to suspect there was more going on behind all these delays. She dug into his background and found a photo from an event a few months ago that didn't leave her with a good impression. She was just about to start making calls when she heard Liam's voice boom through the house like thunder. "Maaaaaaaaaaaxxxxxxx!" "Oof, the beast is awake," she grinned, settling in at the kitchen counter with a cup of coffee as she watched him storm in, face red with fury. "How could you do this to me?! I missed an important meeting! If you wanted to screw me over in silence, you could've just kicked me out of the damn bed!" he shouted, exasperated. Maxine smiled as she watched all the muscles in his abs tighten whil

Maxine stood to the side, stunned, watching as Liam finally let go of the guy with a disgusted grunt. The man's face was smeared with blood, and Liam looked like he was on the verge of exploding. Then, without a word, he turned to her and pulled her into a tight hug. "Are you okay?" he asked in a whisper. Maxine could feel her heart pounding in her chest as she stared at the mugger lying on the ground. Liam's face was still burning with fury, and she had no idea he could fight like that. Apparently, Liam Harrington wasn't as helpless as his father thought. "Answer me! Are you okay?!" he shook her slightly, and Maxine nodded silently. Within seconds, Liam had her in the car and they were tearing out of that cursed parking lot, tires screeching across the pavement. They drove home in complete silence. As soon as they arrived, Maxine activated the security system, and while he paced around like a caged bear, she actually cornered him in the bathroom and made him lean over the

Maxine pressed her lips together, because honestly, this was more than she could handle without bursting out laughing. Oh, now the bastard remembered she was his wife? "Excuse me?" Cassian's voice was as full of laughter as her own thoughts. "Would you mind explaining that one more time? Your wife?" Liam's jaw tightened with rage. "Yes. My wife…" "Well, congratulations. I'm not really into open relationships, but considering it's her…" Cassian winked at Maxine over Liam's shoulder. "That's enough," Liam growled. "When did I ever say this was an open relationship?" "You didn't have to," Cassian shot back, annoyed. "I think making out with my sister was a clear enough message. Maybe you need to take a step back and realize you don't have the right to be jealous after kissing another woman in front of her face." Liam gripped Maxine's hand with a possessive motion. "That's between her and me. I'll settle for making sure it never crosses your mind to touch her again," he his
