Chapter 2

The memories filled my heart with bitterness.

I looked around at our simple and cozy home, feeling reluctant to leave.

Jensen bought the house we lived in.

His family strongly opposed our marriage, insisting he focus on his career and not be distracted by a disabled woman like me.

I gave up everything to be with him, and I did not even ask for a wedding ceremony. After we registered our marriage, we moved into our house together.

My best friend, Mia Walter, scolded me for being foolish and told me to leave myself a way out. However, I believed love was everything and ignored her advice back then.

I finally realized how stupid I was.

I took a deep breath and called Mia. After the call, I started packing my things with my left hand.

Packing had become a challenging task for me, but fortunately, I had enough time to do it slowly.

After talking to Mia, I continued packing.

Mia quickly arrived soon after. She became furious when she saw me sitting alone outside the house.

"Why are you here alone? Where's that jerk?" she asked.

Mia had always disliked Jensen.

I smiled bitterly, glancing at the two suitcases by my side. "Mia, please take me away from here."

Without saying anything, she picked up the bigger suitcase and loaded it into her car.

I struggled to push the other one with my one hand, but Mia noticed. With teary eyes, she silently took it from me.

Mia brought me back to her home. After settling me in, she asked what had happened, and I told her everything.

She furiously exclaimed, "How could Jensen do this to you? You lost your hand because of him! You wouldn't have suffered for no reason if it wasn't because of him! You should've left him to fend for himself back then. If you had let him die, you wouldn't have to deal with his lies now."

Mia spent half the night cursing Jensen. I, on the other hand, remained calm as I listened.

We were adults who were responsible for our choices.

To be honest, I had never been able to figure out if he loved me more or if he simply felt guilty, but his actions answered for him.

I stayed at Mia's place and turned off my phone before bed.

I no longer cared about whatever happened next.

When I woke up, I overheard Mia on the phone.

I could not hear what the person on the other end said, but she scoffed. "Why are you threatening me instead of looking for your missing wife? Do you think I'll be spooked that easily?"

My heart sank. I had forgotten that Mia worked in Jensen's team.

I hurried over, looking at her worriedly, but she gave me a reassuring look.

After a moment, she hung up the phone and sneered, "What bad luck!"

"Mia, what did he say to you?" I asked anxiously.

"Nothing important. Don't worry about it. Just stay here and rest. I got you," she said lightly.

Despite her nonchalant tone, I knew Jensen well. He must have threatened her with her job.

Getting a spot on the ecological research team was always competitive. It required a professor's recommendation and multiple rounds of interviews.

Mia had worked so hard to earn her place. Her job was important to her.

"I'll talk to him and ask him to leave you alone," I offered.

"No way! That would be like giving in to him again. I'll quit. I can join another team and still succeed!"

With that, she started humming while preparing job applications for other research teams.

I sighed and was about to say something when my phone suddenly rang.

It was a call from the hospital.
