Chapter 1

When Jensen Tod returned with the chill from outside clinging to him, the porridge I had spent the entire afternoon cooking for him had already gone cold.

To my left sat the wedding ring.

He frowned when he saw me at the dining table late at night. Just as he was about to speak, his eyes landed on the ring.

He paused and asked coldly, "Is this your way of picking a fight?"

It would be impossible for an outsider to guess that Jensen and I were supposed to get married the very next day.

I touched my amputated right hand, and when my gaze fell on the raised scars, I felt extremely sad.

Jensen knew full well that I could never wear a ring on my right hand again and that I hated the scars on my left hand.

He also knew how much I had looked forward to our wedding all those years, yet he kept upsetting me. It seemed like he was reminding me that I was the one who begged for the wedding.

I was devastated.

After a moment of silence, I softly replied, "Jensen, let's get a divorce."

His frown deepened, and his tone grew even more impatient. "The wedding is tomorrow. What are you talking about? It was you who insisted on the ceremony."

I ignored his accusations and picked up a piece of broccoli. It has gone cold and turned bitter—just like my battered heart.

I finally realized it was better to let go of someone I could not hold onto than to keep clinging in vain.

Jensen's face turned dark, and his gaze grew cold.

"I'm not joking. Find time to handle the papers," I said calmly.

He stopped and turned around with shock in his eyes.

He suppressed his anger and questioned me in a low voice, "Do you even know what you're saying, Martha Ramsey?"

I gazed at him calmly. "I said I want a divorce. Don't you understand?"

He let out a cold laugh, his eyes brimming with mockery. He probably thought I was trying to catch his attention.

"I'm not falling for this. Calm yourself down," he spat, throwing on his coat and storming out of the house.

Jensen and I met in college. Although I was his junior, we were both under the same mentor.

He was the genius student that professors used as a benchmark for others back then.

I joined the research project he was working on just to get closer to him, although I was already drowning in coursework and assignments from my tutor.

I was overwhelmed back in those days.

Jensen bumped into me while I was working on assignments late in the lab, and he would come over and patiently guide me through everything.

He was always focused and incredibly kind.

The senior teammates often teased us because of his kindness to me.

Whenever someone joked about us, Jensen would smile warmly, put his arm around my shoulders, and say, "I like Martha. I just want to take good care of her."

His love for me back then was open and honest.

After graduation, we worked together at the same reserved site, conducting in-depth research. We shared the same passions and were deeply in love, making every day feel like a blessing.

One day, we were surrounded by a group of wild animals that had gone mad.

While trying to escape, Jensen fell into a deep pit.

I refused to leave him behind. Despite being attacked and bitten, I threw him a rope and pulled him out.

My right hand was nearly torn apart, and my unprotected left hand was also covered in wounds.

By the time the rescue team arrived, I had already passed out from blood loss. Jensen held me, trembling as tears streamed down his face.

His eyes were red as he continued to apologize. "I'm so sorry, Martha. I couldn't protect you."

He was consumed with guilt and blamed himself for failing to keep me safe.

The accident left me with a disability. My right hand had to be amputated, and I could no longer perform precise experiments or even handle daily tasks as I once did.

Jensen was devastated when he found out. He stayed by my side for three days without eating or drinking.

It was only after I forced myself to comfort him that he managed to pull himself together.

He hugged me tightly and said with determination, "I'll make you the happiest woman in the world, Martha."
