Chapter 2

Author: Aurora Hope
Whitney had her guard up against me. She twisted to the side to dodge my lunge before grabbing me by the hair and slamming my head against the floor with all her strength.

My vision went dark. The world seemed to spin. A warm, sticky sensation immediately started trickling down my forehead.

She didn't give me a second to catch my breath. Flipping me over, she sat on top of me and drove her knee hard into my spine.

"Don't bother trying to do anything. Do you think I spent these three years with you for nothing? I know all your habits and your temper better than you do!

"Each time you try to resist, I'll beat you up. I'll keep going until you learn to behave like the dog you are!" Whitney snarled.

Gritting through the pain, I twisted hard, trying to break free from her. The next second, I felt a sharp, stabbing pain in my side. My muscles spasmed uncontrollably.

Whitney was treating me, her husband, like an enemy. She had no qualms using a stun baton on me.

I collapsed onto the floor, my body limp. The only thing I could do was gasp for air. I didn't even have the strength to lift a single finger.

She finally released me and stared down at me, her eyes utterly devoid of warmth.

"You'd better keep quiet and stay still. Don't force me to resort to more extreme measures."

The moment Whitney finished speaking, Samuel came strutting in, dressed in a sharp suit, his polished shoes spotless.

After taking in the miserable state I was in, he walked up to me with a mocking expression. Nudging my numb body with his foot, he remarked, "Look at you now, Caleb."

His voice dripped with the arrogance and satisfaction of someone who'd won.

"You used to act all cocky, vowing that you'd acquire Havenshire Group from me. Well, how does it feel to be all bound and defenseless like some trapped and wounded animal now, huh?"

He crouched down, the smug smile turning even more sinister.

"You lost to me both in your career and in love. Kelly and Whitney, the two women you loved, ended up being on my side instead. Don't you think your life has been nothing but a big fat joke, Caleb?"

The searing pain in my body and the humiliation in my heart intertwined to burn away what little sanity I had left. Nevertheless, I continued to clench my jaw. That last attempt at resistance had already drained every ounce of strength I had.

I forced myself to calm down, keeping my gaze hollow and unfocused. My lack of reaction made Samuel gloat even more.

He grabbed a document from the inner pocket of his suit. It was a share transfer agreement, but the signature above my name was clearly not a match for my handwriting.

Samuel waved the document in front of me, as if bragging about his winning trophy.

"Take a good look at this. Your company's shares will be mine very soon. You spent three years working your ass off, but in the end, I'm the one who gets to enjoy the fruit of all your labor.

"How does that feel, huh? This is what you get for getting in my way!"

His arrogant face loomed larger and larger before me. I suddenly jerked my head up and used the last of my strength to slam my forehead into his knee.

"Don't celebrate so soon, Samuel! Even if I die, I'm taking you down with me!"

The blow carried no real force. In my weakened state, I couldn't even make him stumble. Yet he clutched his knee and cried out in exaggeration, "My knee! How dare you injure me, Caleb!"

He staggered back and fell heavily to the floor, pretending to be in unbearable pain. It was so over-the-top that anyone with half a brain should've known he was faking it. However, it instantly made Whitney and Kelly feel a pang of heartache.

"Caleb!"

The two women were whipped into a frenzy, and they came charging at me. Their slaps and kicks rained down on me.

Whitney even grabbed a spare metal chain from the floor and wrapped it tightly around my left leg.

At last, the score that stretched over two lifetimes had been settled.I leaned back against the hospital bed. The sunlight coming in through the window stung my eyes, making them a little sore. The curtain had fallen on the show, but those involved still had to live out the rest of their lives with their various wounds and punishments.Eventually, the heavy silence in the room was broken when Marcus opened the door."How do you want to deal with those two board members, Caleb?""Hold a board meeting and show everyone the evidence of Havenshire Group bribing them. Then, have the evidence handed out to all the companies and headhunters in the country as well," I replied."Not only do I want their reputations to be ruined among the people in our company but also across the entire business community. I want to make sure they won't be able to get another job in the industry. Everyone needs to face the consequences for the choices they've made."Following this matter, my company soon

However, before Whitney's press conference even ended, Havenshire Group's legal team had already released a statement.Samuel released the fabricated evidence he had long prepared, accusing Whitney of accepting massive bribes and stealing Havenshire Group's proprietary data. He claimed that she was making a desperate attempt to throw him under the bus with her forged evidence and wild accusations out of fear that her crimes would be exposed.Public opinion flipped again. No one knew what the truth really was.Looking at the news alerts popping up on her phone, Whitney trembled with rage and posted an update on her social media. It was a surveillance video. The footage showed a hospital room, where a man in a hospital gown was kneeling on the floor, desperately begging Samuel."I'm your uncle, Samuel! You can't treat me like this!"Samuel kicked him away, his gaze dark and icy. "Oh? Why didn't you remember that we're family when you swallowed up all of Havenshire Group's shares

In an instant, all the color drained out of Whitney's face. Marcus summoned the bodyguards, who dragged off the dazed Whitney. She didn't fight them.At last, peace returned to the hospital room.Marcus had been keeping a close watch on Samuel the whole time. The moment Whitney came in, Samuel had already made his move."Caleb, Samuel had previously instructed his legal team to fabricate evidence that supposedly proves Whitney accepted massive bribes from Havenshire Group, and she'd also leaked Havenshire Group's proprietary data to you, seemingly a month before we started preparing for the acquisition."Since he hadn't done anything prior to this, we failed to uncover this information. He only brought it out following Whitney's betrayal."The news made me pause. I had to admit that even though I'd been given a second chance at life, I'd still failed to outwit the man who'd set me up in my first life. But this time, even if I couldn't win, I'd drag him down with me.Samuel had n

Samuel reached out to touch Whitney's cheek, but she slapped his hand away."Stop lying to me! There's no way he could know all of these details if he hadn't lived through those memories himself!" she declared.Samuel's expression finally darkened."Whitney! What exactly are you suspicious about? I'm the one who has been protecting you since we were kids! And now, you're questioning me because of some lunatic who hurt us? "Look at what he's done to you and me! I'm the one who gave you everything you have now! Are you really going to betray me for a liar?"His words seemed to have an effect. The resolve in Whitney's eyes wavered, replaced by turmoil. She left the cafe in a daze. However, she didn't just drop it there. After returning home, she searched through my study, determined to find the truth.Eventually, in an old metal box, she found a crudely cut four-leaf clover made from a green plastic bottle. Even though the color had faded a little over time, the wonky shape was ex

The very night the forced takeover failed, an unfamiliar nurse walked into my hospital room with an IV bag, saying she needed to change my medication. However, the caregiver that Marcus hired for me had his guard up and stopped her, saying, "Just set it down. I'll do it."The nurse's eyes darted around as she insisted on doing it herself. Amid the argument, the caregiver snatched the IV bag from her and handed it over to hospital security. The test results showed it had been laced with drugs that would worsen nerve damage. Samuel wanted to ensure that my hand and leg were thoroughly ruined. When I woke up, Marcus was sitting by my bedside with heavy dark circles under his eyes. When he saw my eyes open, he said hoarsely, "You're finally awake, Caleb."I opened my mouth to speak, but my throat felt like it had been scorched. Not a single word came out.Marcus swiftly handed me a cup of warm water and used a damp cotton swab to moisten my lips."The doctor said your vocal cords ar

Only after I heard the man outside calling the police did I finally let out a relieved breath.A little while later, harsh beams from a few flashlights cut through the room, landing on my blood-soaked body."Police! Nobody move!"The tension holding me together finally went slack. The pain and the torment of the past few days flooded over me in an instant. My vision went dark, and I blacked out. When I regained a bit of awareness, I was inside a jolting ambulance. And sometime after that, I heard the tense voices of several doctors and nurses who were going over my condition."The patient has a comminuted fracture of the left leg, a severe fracture of the right wrist, and multiple soft tissue contusions…""The CT scan shows a moderate concussion. Prepare for surgery immediately.""He has sustained severe nerve damage in his right hand. Even if it heals, it's quite likely he won't be able to regain normal use of his right hand again."As I took in what they said, an uncontrolla
