Chapter 4

Author: Cotton Wood
Two burly security guards held me tight. Kylie grabbed my hand and, in a trembling voice, assured me, "Noelle, it's going to be okay."

"Come on! Keep hitting me! Why did you stop?" Cassidy got up from the floor, her eyes full of venom. She asked me, "Do you think hitting me will make those broken pieces whole again?"

She kicked the shattered remnants of the watch with her heel.

"Noelle, don't worry. I'll keep the pieces. We can get it fixed." Kylie stepped toward the pile of fragments, trying to pick up whatever parts she could still recognize.

Cassidy kicked her away and then mercilessly stomped on the little pile Kylie had gathered with her sharp stiletto heels.

She barked, "Old hag, you want to fix it? I'll grind it all into dust today!" As she crushed the pieces, her eyes locked onto me. "See that? That's how you and your treasure look beneath my feet."

"Kylie!"

As I watched Kylie fall to the ground, something inside me snapped. I broke free from the guards' grip.

"I'm going to kill you!"

I grabbed an empty wine bottle off the nearest table and charged at Cassidy.

She screamed in terror. The head of security reacted instantly, kicking me away hard.

"Ms. Lorne, are you okay?" he asked Cassidy as he grabbed my hair and shoved me back down.

"Teach her a lesson! Rip that nasty mouth apart!" Cassidy screamed wildly, clutching her chest.

"I'm not just Jerome's wife. I'm the heiress to Linton Group! Don't you dare touch me!" I shouted.

The guards hesitated, shaken by my fierce demeanor.

"So what if you're Linton Group's heiress? You're still lying under Jerome! But…" Cassidy had a mad look in her eyes as she continued, "I guess he doesn't even want to touch you anymore!" She broke out into hysterical laughter.

Her words pierced me deeply. It was true that Jerome and I hadn't been intimate for a long time.

"What's going on here?" Jerome appeared, flanked by two assistants. He frowned at the chaotic scene around us.

I froze and raised my head.

But almost at the same moment, a more commanding voice rang through the room.

"Noelle!"

The crowd parted as a tall, imposing man strode quickly toward me.

The day before I was scheduled to be discharged, I got a call from Kylie. She asked to meet her at a cafe near the hospital. In just one month, she had visibly aged. Gray hairs framed her temples. Her eyes held apology, concern, and a faint sense of relief as she looked at me."Noelle," she called out, pulling a document from her bag and gently sliding it across the table. It was a share transfer agreement."This is the last portion of clean, premarital assets that Jerome owns in his name. It's not much, but it's a small token from me."As she looked at my belly, her voice trembled just barely noticeably. "I know we wronged you and the baby. Consider this compensation from me, on Jerome's behalf."I didn't touch the document."Kylie," I said softly. "This will be the last time I call you that."Her body trembled, tears quickly filling her eyes."I don't need his compensation. I can raise this baby on my own. Everything they'll ever have comes from my family and me, and has not

Jerome's company, crushed by the combined forces of the Garrison and the Linton families, declared bankruptcy within just three days. He was about to face his final verdict on multiple economic crimes and for inciting assault. The day before the verdict, I received an unexpected call from Kylie. Her voice was heavy with exhaustion and pleading. "Noelle, I'm asking you for one last favor. Jerome wants to see you one more time before he goes in. Just once, please."I was silent for a long time, but eventually, I agreed. Not for anything else, but to close the chaotic chapter of our ten years with a proper ending. The meeting place was the visitation room at the detention center.Through the thick glass, I saw Jerome. In just half a month, he looked 20 years older. His hair was streaked with gray, and his eyes were hollow. He was stripped entirely of his former vigor. When he saw me, a sudden spark lit up his cloudy eyes. He grabbed the phone and pleaded hoarsely, "Noelle, I'm sor

That night was the last time I ever saw Jerome.Following the doctor's advice, I stayed in the hospital on bed rest.Andrew came by almost every day. Along with fresh fruit and carefully prepared, nutritious meals, he also brought updates on the chaos outside. After Cassidy was taken into custody, she refused to plead guilty and insisted that everything had started because I had provoked her first. Her legal team even turned the tables and accused me of manipulating public opinion through the livestream, calling it a malicious business smear.Just before her case was set to go to trial, an audio recording suddenly surfaced on the internet. In the recording, Jerome and I could be heard arguing at home."All you know how to do is rely on your family! Noelle, besides being born lucky, what else can you do? Do you really think I love you? What I love is your status as the Linton family's heiress!"The clip ended with my hoarse, broken sobs. The recording instantly went viral.Has

Jerome suddenly stepped in front of me and dropped to his knees with a heavy thud. Clutching the hem of my dress, he cried uncontrollably. "Noelle! I'm sorry! I really messed up! Please forgive me. We've been together for ten years! Please give me one more chance!"He wept like a child, desperately trying to tug at my heart with memories of our past, but all I felt was bitter irony. At that moment, a sharp pain stabbed my lower abdomen. I let out a low groan, and my face grew paler.Andrew immediately steadied me and asked with concern, "What's wrong? Are you okay?"I pressed my hand against my stomach. Suddenly, a thought struck me. It was no wonder I had been so exhausted lately.I looked at Jerome, who was still begging on his knees, and suddenly smiled. "Andrew, help me draft a divorce agreement."Jerome jerked his head up at my words. His eyes were full of confusion and helplessness. "D-Divorce? No! Noelle! We can't get a divorce! We—""We what?" I stared at his regret-fill

Comments flooded the phone screen again."Am I seeing things? Jerome is actually defending the mistress?""This is unbelievable! His mom and wife were just beaten, and his first reaction is to protect that woman?""He's a total scumbag! Callen Group's PR had better buy a grave tonight!"When I saw Jerome still instinctively protecting Cassidy, my legs suddenly went weak, and I staggered back a step.Andrew caught me immediately.Jerome finally seemed to notice me. He shrugged off Cassidy's grip and stepped toward me with shock written all over his face."Noelle, I'm sorry. I…" His voice trembled as he looked at my battered body. "Believe me. You're the only one I love. She's nothing to me."Seeing Jerome actually showing concern for me, Cassidy completely lost it and started spilling secrets."Nothing? Jerome, did you forget what you told me back then? You said that Noelle was too strong-willed, and only with me could you find your dignity as a man! You told me that once your

It was Andrew Garrison. When he saw me struggling on the ground, his eyes darkened with anger.Jerome's gaze swept over the room and finally locked onto the shattered watch lying on the floor. His pupils shrank sharply."W-What the hell happened?" His voice trembled.Cassidy, spotting Jerome, clung to him like a drowning person to a lifeline. She instantly dropped the venomous act and put on a wounded expression. She stumbled into his arms and pointed at me like I was the villain."Jerome, you're finally here! This woman has lost her mind! She not only hit me but smashed the watch herself! She's just trying to scam you for money!"Jerome instinctively pulled the trembling Cassidy close, but his eyes stayed fixed on the broken watch pieces on the floor. His face twisted with pain and anger as he yelled at me, "Noelle Linton, are you out of your mind? Do you have any idea how much money I spent on that watch?"I felt like my heart was being crushed by an invisible hand. Pain didn
