Chapter 8

Author: Anna Smith
For the next few days, Lorenzo barely slept.

He spent his days in the study, going over the fire reports until the details blurred together. At night, he drifted to the family’s private club. Not for company, but because it was one of the few places quiet enough to sit with his thoughts.

He drank too much.

A few men who had known him for years stayed nearby, saying little. At some point, one of them quietly sent Bianca a message.

She arrived less than half an hour later.

Lorenzo was slumped into

He stood there with that dark look on his face, as if I was supposed to give in.I didn’t.“Lorenzo,” I said, “stop calling this love. You can’t stand losing control of me. That’s all this is.”His jaw tightened.“You thought that if you apologized, if you came after me, I’d go back to being the woman who waited for you.” I shook my head. “I won’t.”“I’m not coming back. And I’m not changing my mind.”He stared at me, breathing hard.“You won’t walk away from me that easily.”I almost laughed.“Watch me.”The club manager was already approaching with security.I looked at Lorenzo and said, very evenly, “If you don’t let this end here, I’ll have them call the police.”He didn’t move.I turned to the manager. “Call them.”He did. This wasn’t Naples. He couldn’t make the problem disappear with one word. By the time the police arrived and the footage was reviewed, the damage was done. He wasn’t held for long, but he left humiliated, blood still at the corner of his mouth. Before he went, h

I looked at the hand Matteo held out. After a brief pause, I took it.“Let’s start over,” he said with a small smile. “I’m Matteo Ferri.”“It’s been a long time.”Dinner was easier than I had expected. When my manager stepped away for a moment, he looked at me and said quietly, “There’s something I wanted to tell you myself. I liked you when we were kids. I still do.”I hesitated, then answered honestly.“I’m not ready for anything new.” I was pregnant, and whatever happened next, I meant to keep my distance from anything that looked like feeling.Matteo nodded.“I know. I’m not asking for anything tonight,” he said. “I just want you to know that if the day ever comes when you are ready, I’d like you to think of me first.”I hadn’t even opened my mouth when a familiar voice cut across the room.“She won’t.”I went still. When I turned, Lorenzo was standing only a few steps away.He looked thinner than the last time I had seen him, drawn tight with strain, but his eyes were fixed on me

I moved into the company housing. My manager was heading north for a new project and wanted me there to learn the process, so I went with her.I had barely checked in when my mother called.“He came to see me.”I stood in the hotel corridor, keycard in hand, and said nothing.“He didn’t ask where you were. Not directly. He asked about the fire. About the days before it. Whether you’d ever mentioned leaving Naples. Whether I’d noticed anything unusual.” She paused. “He still hasn’t gone back.”I looked down at the card between my fingers and felt only a dull flicker of irritation. What did it matter?Only after I was gone had he learned how to value me.My mother told me to keep my head down for a while. I told her I would. That evening, my manager took me to a hotel by the lake to meet the project team. Before we went in, I stepped out onto the terrace for air.The wind coming off the water was cold.I had just tucked my hair behind my ear when I heard a familiar voice behind me.“...s

At some point, one of them quietly sent Bianca a message. She arrived less than half an hour later.Lorenzo was slumped into the corner of the leather sofa, shirt collar open, a glass hanging loose in one hand. When he looked up and saw her in the doorway, something in his face shifted. He was on his feet before the mistake caught up to him. He crossed the room, pulled Bianca into his arms, and buried his face against her shoulder.“Sofia…”Bianca froze. But Lorenzo held on, his voice rough with drink and grief.“You came back.”His grip tightened.“Don’t leave again.”Bianca’s whole expression changed. She shoved hi

Lorenzo went straight from the coast to Bianca’s penthouse. When the door opened, she looked relieved to see him.“Lorenzo, I knew you’d come back.”He cut her off by shoving her against the wall. The smile vanished from her face.“Lorenzo.”“Why?” he said. She stared at him, confused for half a second, then frightened.“Why did you keep going after her?” His voice was low and deadly calm. “The looks at the auction. The little comments. The way you made sure Sofia saw just enough. Why?”Bianca’s eyes filled at once.He tore the phone from her hand and opened it. It took him only moments to find what he needed, the saved stories, the filtered audience list, the pattern he had been too willing to ignore.Sofia had not imagined any of it.Bianca had curated it for her. When Lorenzo looked up again, there was nothing left in his expression.“You wanted her humiliated,” he said. “You wanted her pushed out.”Bianca was crying now, reaching for him and stopping herself halfway.“I was jealous

For weeks, Sofia barely left his side.Even after the fever broke, she watched over his medicine, his dressings, and the long nights when pain kept him awake. And when he finally began to recover, she still stayed close—making sure he rested, keeping him warm, and never quite trusting that he was truly safe.Lorenzo remembered one moment with painful clarity. He had been standing on the terrace, still weak, still pale, and Sofia had come up behind him to settle his coat more securely over his shoulders. That was when he made himself a promise. If he lived, he would spend the rest of his life being good to her.So when had he forgotten?Had Sofia loved him too well, too completely, until he began to believe she would never leave?Or had he simply grown so used to her devotion that he stopped seeing it at all?Lorenzo closed his eyes.Bianca had drawn him in because she was bright and reckless and alive in a way that felt almost dangerous. There was something in her youth, in the careles
