Chapter 2

Autor: Wild Wilder
A little while later, Liam came back carrying a mug, his voice almost overly pleasant.

"I made you some coffee. Get to bed early tonight. Good night."

Then he yawned and headed back to the bedroom.

It could have been milk. Juice. Even a glass of water would have been fine.

Instead, he made me coffee.

I'd struggled with insomnia for years. Sleep was already hard enough, and I kept sleep aids in the nightstand beside the bed. After living with me for five years, there was no way Liam hadn't seen them. No way he didn't know.

A hot, bitter ache rose in my throat.

Holding back tears, I stumbled into the kitchen. The cold takeout potstickers belonged in the trash, and the coffee needed to go down the sink, but my hands weren't cooperating. I moved the wrong way and dumped the entire mug of hot coffee straight into the garbage.

The mug slipped from my hand and shattered.

The crash woke Sophie.

Liam came out looking angrier than I'd seen him in a long time.

"Didn't I tell you to keep it down?"

With my back to him, I quickly wiped away my tears.

"My hand slipped."

He didn't let it go.

"You did that on purpose."

Before I could answer, Sophie wandered over rubbing her eyes. She caught Liam by the arm and gave it a little shake.

"Don't be mad at her. I'm sure she didn't mean to do it."

The anger disappeared from his face almost instantly.

"I'm not mad at her. Go back to sleep."

Sophie blinked up at him with exaggerated innocence, then came over and slipped her arm through mine.

"Don't be upset," she said sweetly. "You'll always be my favorite person."

From the couch, Liam frowned.

"What about me? I treat you pretty well too. How come you only like your sister?"

Sophie immediately let go of me and hurried back to him. She tugged playfully at his sleeve.

"Fine. You're my second favorite, okay?"

Then, in an even sweeter voice, she added, "You're the best. Don't be mad anymore, Liam."

The last word came out drawn and teasing, with the same playful affection she always used when reminding him he was supposed to be her future brother-in-law.

Just like that, Liam was smiling again.

Standing together beneath the warm light, the two of them looked less like family and more like a couple still in the honeymoon phase.

It wasn't the first time I'd had to watch something like this.

When Liam and I first got together, things had been different. Back then, what we had really had felt gentle and complete.

My father died when I was young, and my mother had never been particularly loving. For as long as I could remember, I'd wanted a home that truly felt like mine.

So when Liam asked me to move to Cedarford and live with him, I said yes without hesitation. I was so happy, convinced I'd finally found the place where I belonged.

And back then, he really had adored me.

My stomach was sensitive, and I couldn't handle the rich, heavily spiced food that was popular around here. Liam would get up half an hour early just to make me a mild breakfast I could actually eat.

No matter how late he had to work, he always came to pick me up on time.

His phone passcode was my birthday. My picture was his lock screen.

There had been so many small moments when he'd taken care of me so completely that I'd grown used to feeling safe with him. Sometimes I even worried about it, afraid that one day I might somehow lose the love he'd given me.

Whenever I admitted that fear, Liam would patiently reassure me.

"I take care of you because I want to give you all the love you missed growing up. I want to make up for everything your parents couldn't give you."

I believed him.

For five whole years, I believed every word.

Then Sophie graduated from college and moved to the same city.

Little by little, Liam stopped remembering what I liked and started remembering everything about her instead.

He remembered what she liked to eat. When her exams were. When she was on break. When she was running short on money.

He even remembered when her period was due.

At first, I told myself he was only looking after her because she was my sister.

Eventually, I realized how wrong I was.

She was always the one allowed to laugh, make a fuss, and take whatever she wanted.

I was always the one expected to back down.

Sophie could pout, act spoiled, make demands, and never question whether she had the right.

Somehow, I had been pushed back into the same role I'd spent my whole life playing: the one who had to be mature, understanding, and accommodating.

The faint indentation from my engagement ring was still visible around my finger, a reminder of how hopeful I'd been when Liam proposed.

Looking at it now, I finally understood something.

This wasn't the home I'd wanted anymore.

Across the room, Sophie curled up on the couch and said something I couldn't hear. Liam laughed, then reached over and gave her an affectionate pat on the head.

Warm light fell over the two of them.

I stood alone in the shadows, feeling the cold spread through my body.

I clenched my teeth until my jaw hurt, refusing to let the tears spill over.

When I finally spoke, my voice trembled.

"Liam, come here for a minute. I need to talk to you."

Three years later, I was promoted to department head, and my salary doubled with it.My career was steadily moving upward when I met Xavier Stone. He was the project lead at one of our partner companies. We first crossed paths at an industry networking event, where he sat quietly near the windows in a neat, well-tailored suit. He spoke gently but handled things with calm efficiency, always polite without ever overstepping. There was no dramatic spark the moment we met, no string of carefully engineered "chance" encounters afterward.Even so, when Xavier eventually told me how he felt, my first reaction was unease. After what I'd been through with Liam, I no longer trusted easily. I was extremely cautious about letting anyone get close, so I didn't accept Xavier's feelings right away.I watched him for six months.By then, I knew he and Liam couldn't have been more different.Xavier was kind, but never indiscriminately so. Thoughtful, but always respectful of boundaries. He never tried

"Mom."I looked at her calmly."We don't need to see each other anymore. I'll still send you money every month for your living expenses. I won't shirk what I owe you."But from now on, that's all there is between us. Obligation. Nothing more."Diane's eyes immediately filled with tears. She stared at me helplessly, her voice catching."Yara, I'll change. I'll treat you better from now on. I won't favor Sophie anymore."Please don't go. I know I was wrong. I really do..."She apologized over and over, practically begging by the end, but none of it moved me.Liam, on the other hand, looked completely panicked. He grabbed my wrist and held on as if he could keep me there by force of desperation alone."Yara, don't do this. Please don't leave. Stop the movers."We can fix this. We can go back to how things were. I was wrong. I was so wrong."I gently pulled my wrist free, my movements calm but unmistakably resolute. For years, he'd chosen Sophie's side over mine again and again. With me, e

It was as if last night's breakdown had never happened.I steadied myself against the wall as I changed my shoes by the door, my face completely blank.Liam's eyes immediately reddened."Yara! You're back!" His voice shook. "Where have you been all day?"He moved aside in a fluster to let me in, then hurried to bring me a pair of house shoes. After that, he poured me a glass of warm water and started straightening the throw pillows Sophie had left scattered across the couch. This was the same man who had spent years taking everything I did for him for granted. Now he was scrambling around the apartment, clumsily trying to take care of me.It was almost funny.Sophie watched from the side, jealousy and resentment flashing across her face."Wow. So you do know how to come home."She gave me a mocking smile."I thought once you stormed out, you'd never come back. What happened? Spent a whole day and night running around outside, finally got over your little tantrum, and came crawling back

Sophie stood off to the side crying even harder, but for the first time, Liam found the sound irritating. He didn't go to comfort her.Something about the apartment felt wrong. The vanity had been cleared. Yara's documents were gone. Most of her everyday things were still scattered through the living room, though, and the closet, shelves, and tabletops were still full enough that at first glance, the place hardly looked any different.Liam's chest suddenly hollowed out.The thin thread of reassurance he'd been clinging to began to snap.He pulled out his phone and messaged her.[Stop this. Come home.]A cold notification appeared beneath it.[Not delivered.]She had blocked him.In that moment, panic hit him all at once. They had been together for years, from dating in college to moving in together, and they'd fought more times than he could count. He had favored Sophie, held Yara to standards he never applied to anyone else, and ignored her hurt again and again.Yet Yara had always sw

Sophie stepped directly in front of him."What are you doing, Liam?" she demanded. "Do you have any idea how dangerous it is in there? What if the building collapses?"Besides, Yara's a grown woman. She knows how to get herself out. She's not a child."Diane grabbed his arm too, though there was a trace of guilt in her voice."She's right. Yara isn't stupid. If there's an earthquake, of course she'd know to come downstairs."Liam tore himself free of them."What if she's asleep?" he snapped. "She has a sleep disorder. If she took her medication, she might not wake up!"I have to go get her."Sophie clung tightly to his arm. Her eyes reddened almost instantly, her voice breaking as she spoke."Liam, I can live without my sister... but I can't live without you."If something really happens to her this time, then I'll take her place."I'll be your wife. Okay?"Liam went completely still."What the hell are you talking about? Yara is the woman I'm marrying."You're her sister. You're famil

Liam sighed, sounding more exasperated than anything."Mrs. Lawson, come on. Don't joke about something like that."Yara's been so negative lately. She's nothing like she used to be, and sometimes I really miss the old her." After a moment, he added, "Starting tomorrow, I'll have a serious talk with her. She needs to learn to stop acting like this so we can get back to having a normal life together."He was the one who had changed me beyond recognition, yet somehow, in his version of events, every bit of it had become my fault.Diane still wouldn't let it go."Liam, don't force yourself to stay with that girl and make yourself miserable. Look, I posted these pictures of Sophie in the wedding dress in our family group chat. Every single relative said she looked beautiful and elegant."Her voice turned colder."Yara's never been likable, even when she was little. That's her own fault."Curled up on the floor behind the bedroom door, I clenched my teeth and tried to keep my breathing ste
