Chapter 4

Autor: Wild Wilder
Liam sighed, sounding more exasperated than anything.

"Mrs. Lawson, come on. Don't joke about something like that.

"Yara's been so negative lately. She's nothing like she used to be, and sometimes I really miss the old her."

After a moment, he added, "Starting tomorrow, I'll have a serious talk with her. She needs to learn to stop acting like this so we can get back to having a normal life together."

He was the one who had changed me beyond recognition, yet somehow, in his version of events, every bit of it had become my fault.

Diane still wouldn't let it go.

"Liam, don't force yourself to stay with that girl and make yourself miserable. Look, I posted these pictures of Sophie in the wedding dress in our family group chat. Every single relative said she looked beautiful and elegant."

Her voice turned colder.

"Yara's never been likable, even when she was little. That's her own fault."

Curled up on the floor behind the bedroom door, I clenched my teeth and tried to keep my breathing steady through the pain.

I'd muted the family group chat a long time ago because I was tired of the endless favoritism. I'd thought that if I didn't see it, maybe it couldn't hurt me as much.

Diane always found a way to put it right in front of me anyway.

I pulled out my phone and quietly left the group. Then I spent three minutes deleting every photo of Liam and me together and wiping years of messages from our chat history.

Maybe there was a point where something hurt so badly that there were simply no tears left.

The night grew quiet, and the laughter in the living room had long since died away.

No footsteps ever came toward the bedroom.

Liam had no intention of coming back.

There it was. The silent treatment again.

Over the years, whenever I did something he didn't like, this was how he forced me to give in. He would withdraw until I couldn't stand it anymore, certain that sooner or later, I would be the one to apologize and make peace.

He was counting on me to do it again.

This time, he'd miscalculated.

I slowly got to my feet, walked to the closet, and pulled out a suitcase I hadn't used in years.

Then I started packing.

At three in the morning, I wheeled it out of the master bedroom.

The guest room door was slightly ajar, and I couldn't stop myself from looking inside as I passed.

Light from the hallway spilled through the gap.

Liam was asleep with his upper body slumped beside the bed. Sophie lay on her side, lightly holding his hand.

He wasn't holding hers back, but he hadn't pulled away either.

I stood there for a long moment before finally turning away and heading for the door.

I'd barely made it two steps outside the building when the ground suddenly lurched beneath my feet.

A second jolt hit almost immediately, much stronger than the first.

An earthquake.

Screams erupted around me, followed by the pounding of frantic footsteps as residents came pouring out of the surrounding buildings in a panic.

Within minutes, the open area outside the complex was packed with people seeking safety.

I stood at the edge of the crowd and looked up.

Three familiar figures immediately caught my eye.

Liam had one arm protectively around Sophie, while Diane pressed close on the other side. The three of them clung to one another, their faces filled with the shaken relief of people who had just escaped something terrible.

Not one of them had noticed I was there.

A few seconds later, Liam suddenly lifted his head.

His gaze darted desperately across the crowded courtyard, and his lips began to tremble.

"Yara. We ran downstairs without Yara."

Diane, who had been completely focused on comforting Sophie, went rigid.

For the first time, genuine panic flooded her face.

"Yara... Yara's still upstairs."

She looked between them helplessly.

"Neither of you woke her?"

Sophie stared at them blankly.

"What? I don't know. She didn't come down?"

Watching them from across the crowd, I gave a small, bitter smile.

Something inside me felt even emptier than before.

The ground lurched again.

A deep, ominous groan rolled through the apartment building, as though the entire structure might come down at any moment.

People screamed and surged farther back.

Liam whipped around toward the entrance. Without seeming to realize it, he took a step in that direction.

"Yara..."

  • By the Time the Evening Wind Came   Chapter 9

Three years later, I was promoted to department head, and my salary doubled with it.My career was steadily moving upward when I met Xavier Stone. He was the project lead at one of our partner companies. We first crossed paths at an industry networking event, where he sat quietly near the windows in a neat, well-tailored suit. He spoke gently but handled things with calm efficiency, always polite without ever overstepping. There was no dramatic spark the moment we met, no string of carefully engineered "chance" encounters afterward.Even so, when Xavier eventually told me how he felt, my first reaction was unease. After what I'd been through with Liam, I no longer trusted easily. I was extremely cautious about letting anyone get close, so I didn't accept Xavier's feelings right away.I watched him for six months.By then, I knew he and Liam couldn't have been more different.Xavier was kind, but never indiscriminately so. Thoughtful, but always respectful of boundaries. He never tried

"Mom."I looked at her calmly."We don't need to see each other anymore. I'll still send you money every month for your living expenses. I won't shirk what I owe you."But from now on, that's all there is between us. Obligation. Nothing more."Diane's eyes immediately filled with tears. She stared at me helplessly, her voice catching."Yara, I'll change. I'll treat you better from now on. I won't favor Sophie anymore."Please don't go. I know I was wrong. I really do..."She apologized over and over, practically begging by the end, but none of it moved me.Liam, on the other hand, looked completely panicked. He grabbed my wrist and held on as if he could keep me there by force of desperation alone."Yara, don't do this. Please don't leave. Stop the movers."We can fix this. We can go back to how things were. I was wrong. I was so wrong."I gently pulled my wrist free, my movements calm but unmistakably resolute. For years, he'd chosen Sophie's side over mine again and again. With me, e

It was as if last night's breakdown had never happened.I steadied myself against the wall as I changed my shoes by the door, my face completely blank.Liam's eyes immediately reddened."Yara! You're back!" His voice shook. "Where have you been all day?"He moved aside in a fluster to let me in, then hurried to bring me a pair of house shoes. After that, he poured me a glass of warm water and started straightening the throw pillows Sophie had left scattered across the couch. This was the same man who had spent years taking everything I did for him for granted. Now he was scrambling around the apartment, clumsily trying to take care of me.It was almost funny.Sophie watched from the side, jealousy and resentment flashing across her face."Wow. So you do know how to come home."She gave me a mocking smile."I thought once you stormed out, you'd never come back. What happened? Spent a whole day and night running around outside, finally got over your little tantrum, and came crawling back

Sophie stood off to the side crying even harder, but for the first time, Liam found the sound irritating. He didn't go to comfort her.Something about the apartment felt wrong. The vanity had been cleared. Yara's documents were gone. Most of her everyday things were still scattered through the living room, though, and the closet, shelves, and tabletops were still full enough that at first glance, the place hardly looked any different.Liam's chest suddenly hollowed out.The thin thread of reassurance he'd been clinging to began to snap.He pulled out his phone and messaged her.[Stop this. Come home.]A cold notification appeared beneath it.[Not delivered.]She had blocked him.In that moment, panic hit him all at once. They had been together for years, from dating in college to moving in together, and they'd fought more times than he could count. He had favored Sophie, held Yara to standards he never applied to anyone else, and ignored her hurt again and again.Yet Yara had always sw

Sophie stepped directly in front of him."What are you doing, Liam?" she demanded. "Do you have any idea how dangerous it is in there? What if the building collapses?"Besides, Yara's a grown woman. She knows how to get herself out. She's not a child."Diane grabbed his arm too, though there was a trace of guilt in her voice."She's right. Yara isn't stupid. If there's an earthquake, of course she'd know to come downstairs."Liam tore himself free of them."What if she's asleep?" he snapped. "She has a sleep disorder. If she took her medication, she might not wake up!"I have to go get her."Sophie clung tightly to his arm. Her eyes reddened almost instantly, her voice breaking as she spoke."Liam, I can live without my sister... but I can't live without you."If something really happens to her this time, then I'll take her place."I'll be your wife. Okay?"Liam went completely still."What the hell are you talking about? Yara is the woman I'm marrying."You're her sister. You're famil
