INICIAR SESIÓNAfter Raymond parted from me, I placed my hand over my mouth, holding in the urge to scream and snap at him. He just had to do one thing and he couldn’t do that. All he had to do was kill the monster. The warriors were still running around the camp, trying to find their way out. After a minute of walking around, I figured the way out from the forest and back into the town. There were wet tire marks from the car that had left earlier with the injured boy. The tire marks were going to lead everyone back home.I told as many people as I could and guided them out from the camps while a few of them remained on the ground, injured. Some of the injured ones were getting carried away by the other warriors while the rest were still there. It was a monster that had tore through this forest, nothing more.“You should come with us,” one of the warriors whispered to me, his voice tight with urgency. “It’s not safe for you here either.” He continued, glancing over his shoulder at the spreading chao
I lined my lips straight. “Take him to the hospital before I rip your head off.”The man quickly grabbed the boy off my shoulders and turned around to command the warriors in training. A few of them got into the vehicle nearby and they began driving out of the forest while the rest of them remained surrounding me. Whispers began to rise between them. The ones that had gotten a sight of the boy and the wound on his neck were gossiping among themselves. I could hear it all.“Did you see that? It looked like a bite. I think she bit the boy.” One of them whispered to another.I rolled my eyes before turning around and walking back into the same path I came from. Their judgment meant nothing to me right now.I needed to find Raymond. The silence was eating me up alive. There was no sound of him or the monster we both had encountered. The night was getting darker and I was getting more uncomfortable with every step.I parted myself away from the camp and none of the warriors followed me. Th
The skies began turning dark just when the sun began disappearing completely. The golden hues were gone in just a couple of minutes, but we did get lucky to see the sun setting from the hills. My heart thudded loud and hard in my chest. I felt enthralled and wild, and so did Raymond. We took the lead over one another after every minute. We fought hard and bruised each other’s wolves slightly. We raced and tracked each other’s scents across the forest, laughing under our breath in those brief moments when we paused to catch the wind.Until…The air became stiff and the atmosphere changed. We stopped in our tracks in the middle of nowhere, both of us sensing something unusual. There were wolves around, tons of pack wolves running and some training, but this was different, heavier and wrong.“Do you smell it?” I asked Raymond while my nose wrinkled. It was strong, the stench of death and blood. If I could sense it, so could he, and if we both did, it was somewhere near us.“Yes. It’s a l
The lunch meeting stretched on for another long hour. I lost track of time completely as I listened to the low, powerful chatter of so many Alphas in one room. It was the first time I had ever stood in a space packed with that much raw authority. It felt different this time.Eventually the meeting concluded. The Alphas began to divide and part ways, filing out toward their vehicles and taking the highway out of town one after another. So many thoughts swirled inside my head. What had they really been doing here? I knew one of them was helping Raymond with the poison… but the others? Why had they come?“Did you find out if any of them has the poison?” I asked, hands buried in my pockets as I stood outside in the cold, chilling air. I watched the sky slowly change colors while the last of the Alphas left the town. The gates of the house stood wide open, revealing the paved road beyond. The sun, nearly setting, cast its golden light across the road and the tall trees surrounding the prop
Raymond gawked at me with his eyes wide and his nostrils flaring. He blinked slowly, waiting for me to take the words back. The threat had blurted itself out of my mouth before I could think it through properly. The damage couldn’t be reversed now… but I still had to try and soften it.“I don’t mean it like that...” I began, but he was already closing the distance between us with dangerous intent. Every step he took forward forced me to take one back. “I just want to find her. She’s the one who did this. She must have something going on in her head, and I’m the only one who can track her down.” I scrambled for the right words, anything that might calm the fury building in him.I already had a rough idea of where Renee might be hiding. She was probably laying low in someone’s pack, waiting to see exactly how the poison would affect Raymond. She couldn’t have run too far. Not yet.“You’re not leaving this place,” he said, voice low and final. “And if you do, I’ll drag you back myself. A
Renee had reached a new low and it was far lower than I ever thought she was capable of. Why would she have given the poison to anyone else? Why had she given it to Raymond in the first place? What exactly had Raymond done to her when she came back into his life?He still hadn’t told me everything that happened the day she returned. Part of me suspected he hadn’t treated her kindly… but at this point I wasn’t even jealous that he had allowed Renee near him again after she had killed our pup. I was simply terrified for him.“But I overheard you speaking to that other man, I suppose the Alpha of the Silvertail pack about the new strain of the poison and something about his healers,” I said, quirking a brow at him, still thoroughly confused.“He’s not the enemy,” Raymond explained. “I asked him a favor to try and figure out a way to reverse the effects of the poison. In return, I offered some of my army whenever he needs it.” He paused. “Though his healers haven’t come up with anything y
