Chapter 7 The Limit of Lies

Silence. No one spoke.

Laura looked up and saw a look of confusion on Asher's face.

"Raped?"

Laura wasn't lying. She had indeed been helpless when Asher assaulted her. It was just that he didn't recognize her... or perhaps didn't care.

With tears streaming down her face, Laura began to explain, "Yes... I was raped... and that's what got me kicked out of my family without any assets." She knelt before Asher. "I'm staying at my friend's place, but I can't stay for long. That's why I tried to steal that necklace, to get money faster!"

Laura wasn't entirely lying, but she wasn't entirely truthful either. She was indeed assaulted by Asher, and also kicked out by Simon. However, her reason for stealing was a massive lie.

Asher watched Laura's body tremble while she knelt before him. His pair of dark eyes studied every move Laura made, especially the meaning in her eyes when she had looked at him earlier.

Right then, Laura raised her head. "Please, don't fire me..." she pleaded. "Give me one more chance..."

Laura's blue eyes made something within Asher churn, especially the tears flowing down her face. For some reason... there was a pull from those beautiful ocean-blue eyes.

"Stand up."

Hearing the command, Laura froze. "Sir?" She saw him let out a loud sigh.

"Don't kneel to me," Asher said, his face as cold as ever. "I don't need your groveling."

Laura wiped her tears and stood up, following Asher's order.

"I don't care what happened to you," the man stated, making Laura feel her efforts to explain were futile. However, Laura didn't expect Asher to continue, "You get one chance."

Laura blinked, looking confused.

Asher clarified, "I'm giving you one chance. One more slipup, and you leave this company immediately."

As she heard Asher's word, Laura's eyes welled up with tears again. There was a deep sense of gratitude in her heart.

"Thank you, Mr. Smith! Thank you!" Laura bowed several times, causing Asher to turn his face away.

"Leave if there are no other issues."

"I-I understand!"

Watching Laura leave, Asher stood still in his spot. His face seemed conflicted, as if he couldn't believe he had acted kindly toward someone else. But without saying anything, he closed his eyes.

'Those blue eyes... they're driving me crazy...'

One week had passed since Laura found out she was pregnant. However, not a single person from the Robinson family knew about it.

Laura actually wanted to share her anxieties about the pregnancy with Emma. But Laura knew Emma might fly into a rage and storm into Laura's workplace to confront Asher if she found out.

As a result, besides Laura, Asher, the hospital doctor, and Theo who delivered the pregnancy test report, no one else knew about the pregnancy.

"Bring all the reports here," Asher commanded as he arrived and walked past Laura's desk.

"Yes, sir," Laura replied, grabbing the documents and quickly following Asher.

Laura's work so far was quite good, and even if Asher didn't say it, he acknowledged that her performance was satisfactory. To this day, Asher had no intention of firing her. He had even paid Laura's salary early that month, with a warning that she must not steal again.

On that quiet afternoon, Laura heard Theo inform Asher about a meeting. "Mr. Myers is already on the ground floor."

'Myers?' Laura looked surprised to hear the name. That was Noah's last name.

However, the surprise didn't last long. Laura shook her head lightly,

'Why are you surprised, Laura? Lots of people have that last name.' She continued inwardly,

'Besides, I've never heard of the Myers family collaborating with Smith Group.'

"Laura." Asher's voice calling Laura jolted her from her thoughts. Glancing at Laura, the man added, "Come along."

"Y-Yes, sir!"

Laura took quick steps to catch up with Asher and Theo. Although momentarily nervous upon hearing the name, Laura didn't want to break her concentration. She had to remain professional.

However, when Theo opened the door and they entered the room, Laura's steps immediately halted. This happened simultaneously with a pair of brown eyes landing on her with shock.

"Laura...?"

There, stood a man in a dark blue suit with a handsome, gentle face.

Laura couldn't help but utter the man's name softly, "Noah…"

Yes, the man was Laura's former fiancé, Noah Myers.

Why... why was he here?!

As Laura and Noah stared at each other, another familiar voice was heard calling her, "Laura?"

Laura turned to the figure standing next to Noah.

In that very moment, Laura's world seemed to stop.
