Chapter 7: The forced contract

Wren sat in her office long after Theo had left, staring at the document he'd laid on her table.

She kept thinking about the words he'd said. Then a knock came at her office door. She quickly adjusted her posture in her seat, cleared her throat, and buttoned up.

"Come in."

The door opened, and Cole stepped in, gently closing it behind him before adjusting his glasses.

"The CEO asked me to submit the document he gave you to sign."

"Oh! I forgot. Let me quickly get it signed." She picked up a pen and began reading through the document.

Eventually, she stopped. Her eyes caught on a line halfway down the page, and she went still. She read it again, slower this time, then flipped back through the pages.

"This..." she said, still scanning the document. "This isn't a document for a secretary to sign. This is a contract." She raised her eyes to Cole. "He wants me to sign a contract?"

Cole stepped closer. "A contract? What's it about?"

"I don't know. Besides, why would he need me to sign a contract at all?" She took a deep breath and swallowed hard. "Don't worry, Cole. I'll submit this to him myself — he'll give me an explanation." She stood, tucked the document into a folder, and made her way out of the office.

She headed straight for Theo's office, document in hand, and knocked hard on the door twice.

"Come in," Theo called from inside.

She opened the door and walked straight to his desk, where he sat working through some files.

"What is this?" she asked, raising the document.

"What is what?" Theo asked, his voice calm.

"Don't act like you don't know what I mean. What is this?" Her voice rose as she slapped the document down on his desk, sending his files scattering across the surface, some sliding to the floor in the sudden chaos.

For a moment, the only sound in the office was the soft rustle of paper settling.

Theo looked down at the mess, unbothered, then set his pen aside and leaned back in his chair, arms folding calmly across his chest. He studied her the way someone studies a storm they aren't afraid of.

"You gave me a contract to sign, and lied that it was a document for a new secretary? What is this contract about?" she asked, pointing at it.

Theo bowed his head for a second, then lifted it and rose to his feet. He slid both hands into his pockets and walked toward her, slow and unhurried.

"Did you sign it?" he asked.

"What— yes, I mean no! I didn't sign it," she said, her voice starting to shake.

Theo stopped, reached for the document she'd dropped on his desk, and opened it. His eyes moved over the pages. He held it in his right hand, tucked his left back into his pocket, and continued walking slowly toward her.

"Stop! Don't come closer." Wren stepped back, her heart pounding, her breath catching in her throat.

"You're right, I lied. It's a contract, not a document for a new secretary. But I want you to sign it. I want you to sign it, Wren." He kept walking, unhurried, his left hand still in his pocket.

"You want me to sign a contract I know nothing about? I can't do that, Theo."

"If I tell you what it's about, will you sign it?"

"Maybe. If it's okay."

"If it's okay?" He took another step closer.

Wren's back hit the wall. She swallowed hard.

"Yes! I'll sign it, Theo. I'll sign it. Just stop coming closer, please." Her breath came fast.

Theo paused, then smiled, raising the file up.

"It's an oath. It binds you from resigning or leaving this company — meaning you can't resign, and you can't leave, until we decide to let you go."

"What? So I'm stuck here?"

"Yeah. Something like that."

"I'm not signing that," Wren said, pointing at the document in his hand.

He kept walking closer.

"We made a deal. I tell you what it's about, you sign it."

"But — but—" Her voice shook.

"But what? It's simple. Just sign it." He pushed the document toward her.

Wren looked at it, then at him, already standing right in front of her.

"I'll do anything in my power, even if it means tearing the heavens apart just to keep you beside me, Wren." He leaned in, leaving only a hair's breadth between them.

Wren wanted to push him away, but the distance between them was too close. Her heartbeat rose, her fingers scratching unconsciously at the wall, searching for something to hold onto. She swallowed hard, staring into his eyes, breathing heavily.

"No matter what happens," he said, "you must always be by my side."

"What are you doing?" Wren managed, her voice barely steady.

Theo cupped her jaw, tilting it gently upward.

"Doesn't matter," he said.

Wren swallowed hard, then closed her eyes.

He drew closer, his eyes closing too, his breath warm against her skin—

Then the door opened.

They both turned sharply toward it.

Standing there were Richard Whitfield and Elliot Ashford.

The noise of the lobby faded slowly.Wren stared at the door, her heart seeming to skip a beat, her eyes widening at who she saw standing there."Mom," she said, her voice low, almost to herself.Margie walked into the lobby, and right behind her was Marcus."Margie!" Elliot said, staring at her, his voice carrying the weight of shock, his hands tightening slightly at his sides.Margie stood staring back at him."Mr Ashford." Her voice was flat. "It's really been a long time. You still look the same - rigid, just as you did fifteen years ago."Elliot straightened, a mocking smile appearing on his face and vanishing almost instantly."Mom!" Wren called, her voice louder but shaking. "Babe!"Margie's eyes moved from Elliot to Wren, and her expression changed, the sharpness from a second ago replaced by fear."Baby." She rushed forward, reaching for Wren's hand through the officers surrounding her.Marcus pushed forward too, passing Priya, who still stood frozen, and took his place prote

"What are you reading?"Wren quickly closed her hand around the letter."Nothing," she said, her voice shaky. "It's nothing."Isabelle stepped further into the room, her eyes narrowing. "What do you mean, nothing? I saw you reading something. So what was that?"Wren didn't answer.Isabelle walked closer, slow and deliberate, until she stood right in front of the desk."Give it to me," she said quietly, holding out her hand for the envelope.Wren took a slow step backward. "It's not yours.""Neither is it yours. It belongs to Theo, and he's my boyfriend, not yours." Isabelle kept walking forward as Wren backed away. "Give it to me," she said, her voice rising.Wren's whole body shook at the sharpness of her voice. Her hands shook around the envelope, her eyes fixed on Isabelle, who looked like she was about to devour her."What is going on here?" Elliot asked, stepping into the office.Wren's eyes met his. Isabelle spun around quickly."Sir!" she said, straightening fast, smoothing her

"The CEO is missing."Wren rose quickly from her chair, her phone still pressed to her ear, while Margie watched her daughter's face change more and more."What do you mean?" Wren asked. "When I left, Theo was in his office.""He was in his office when I checked on him twenty minutes ago," Cole said. "Then I went to bring him some documents, and he was gone. His jacket's still on the chair. His phone's still on his desk. We've searched the whole company. He isn't here, and the CCTV didn't catch anything."Wren swallowed hard.Margie leaned forward, watching her daughter's face. "What is it?" she whispered.Wren covered the phone for a second. "Theo's missing," she said. Then, back into the phone: "Cole, has anyone checked with his father? Or Isabelle?""Elliot says he hasn't heard from him. Isabelle isn't picking up either." Cole's voice was tight, worried. "This has never happened before. The CEO doesn't just leave without telling me.""Calm down, Cole. Have you checked his house? Hi

Wren's hands came up fast, pressing flat against Theo's chest, and pushed him away.Theo stumbled back a step, surprised, his hand going briefly to his chest, right where she had touched him."There," she said, her voice shaking but firm. "I pushed you away."Theo stared at her, breathing hard, his eyes searching her face."That doesn't answer my question," he said, his voice low."It doesn't matter what I feel, Theo." Wren stood up from the chair, putting real distance between them. "I already told you. I'm resigning, and that hasn't changed.""Wren–""No." She held up a hand, stopping him. "You don't get to keep doing this. Every time I try to walk away, you say something that pulls me back in. It's not fair. Not to me, not to Marcus, not even to Isabelle."Theo's jaw tightened at her name."I'm not doing this to hurt you," Wren said, quieter now. "I'm doing this because I have to protect myself—from you, from all of this.""You still don't trust me," Theo said."Yeah. I don't." Wre

Theo froze, watching Isabelle walk toward him, each step slow and sure. She reached him and smiled."You look amazed. Why?" she asked, still smiling."What are you doing here?" Theo asked, his voice low and dangerous."Relax. I came to check on our secretary, to see if she's feeling better," Isabelle replied. His jaw tightened."Aren't you supposed to be having dinner with our dads?" Theo asked, his tone sharp. "Look, if you're here to start a commotion, you'd better leave." He pointed back the way she'd come.Isabelle let out a strange laugh."Don't worry, sweetheart. We'll still be having dinner together, you, me, and our dads." She smiled. "I'm just here to check on Wren." She walked past him.Her eyes moved over every face in the hallway, then stopped, freezing in place."Marcus!" she said, her expression twisting with surprise, her breath catching.Theo turned quickly."Boss!"
