 Rain in Milan.

And Giulia was stuck in Marco’s office after hours, helping him prep for the board presentation.

“You don’t have to stay,” Marco said, not looking up from his laptop. “I’ll send a car.”

“I’m already here.” Giulia was marking up his slides with a red pen. Circles. Arrows. Notes in the margins. She was good at this. Better than his actual team. “And you need someone to tell you that slide 12 makes no sense. ‘Synergistic growth projections’ isn’t a sentence.”

Marco finally looked at her. Hair messy from running his hands through it. Tie loose. Sleeves rolled up. He looked 19 again. The boy who taught her to sneak out the back of the library and share one earbud on the bus.

“You’re good at this,” he said.

“You were good at leaving,” she shot back. Then regretted it immediately.

The office went quiet except for rain hitting the glass, 40 floors up.

“I didn’t leave because I wanted to,” Marco said. He closed the laptop. The sound was loud. “My father found out about us. He had photos. Us at the cafe. Us on the train. He threatened to cut off your brother’s scholarship. Said I was ‘distracting the help’s sister.’ He said if I didn’t disappear, he’d make sure your mother never worked in a Bianchi hospital again.”

Giulia’s pen stopped moving.

“I was 19, Giulia,” Marco continued. Voice low. “I had €200 in my account and a trust fund I couldn’t touch. I chose between you and Luca’s future. Between you and your mom’s job. I told myself it was temporary. That I’d come back in a year with my own money. Then a year became two. Then he announced my engagement to Valentina and I thought—”

He cut himself off.

“You thought what?” Giulia asked.

“I thought if you hated me, you’d be safe,” Marco said. “I was wrong.”

Giulia set the pen down. Her chest hurt in a way it hadn’t in 8 years. “You could have told me. A text. A letter. Anything.”

“And have you fight me on it?” Marco stood, walked to the window. Milan was all lights and rain. “You would have. You’re stubborn. You would have tried to fix it with me, and my father would have ruined you for it. I thought I was doing the right thing. I was wrong.”

Giulia stared at his back. The same shoulders. Wider now. The same way he held himself when he was lying.

“You don’t get to say that now,” she said. “Not after 8 years. Not after I watched my mom sell her jewelry to pay for chemo.”

“I know,” Marco said. He turned. “That’s why I’m not asking for more than 30 days. I don’t deserve more. I’m just asking for 30 days to not be a coward.”

Lightning flashed. The power cut out.

The office went black.

Giulia stood up too fast. Her chair hit the desk with a crack. Marco moved instantly, his hand finding her arm in the dark.

“You okay?”

“I’m fine.” But she wasn’t. Because his hand was still on her arm. Warm. Because she could smell his cologne under the rain. Because 8 years didn’t feel like 8 years in the dark.

“Giulia,” he whispered. Not CEO Marco. Just Marco. The boy who used to fall asleep on her couch studying.

“Don’t,” she said. But she didn’t pull away.

His thumb brushed her wrist. Once. Twice. Like he was remembering. “I’m sorry. For then. For now. For putting you in this position. For making you sign that contract.”

“I know,” Giulia said. Her voice broke. “But saying sorry doesn’t fix it, Marco. It doesn’t pay the hospital bills. It doesn’t give me back 8 years.”

“No,” he agreed. His forehead touched hers. Not a kiss. Just… close. Breathing the same air. She could feel how hard he was trying not to move closer. “But maybe 30 days of me trying to do right by you will. Of me showing up. Of me fixing what I can.”

Her phone buzzed in her pocket. Hospital. Again.

Giulia stepped back, out of his reach, fumbling for it in the dark. “Hello?”

“Mom’s stable,” the nurse said. “Fever’s down. But you should come by tomorrow.”

“Okay. Thank you.”

She hung up. The power flickered back on. Harsh office lights.

Marco was already at the desk, three feet away. The CEO mask slid back on his face like armor.

“We have rules, remember?” Giulia said. Her voice was steadier than she felt.

Marco exhaled, nodded. “Rules. Right.” He picked up the red pen and handed it to her. Their fingers brushed. Neither of them pretended it didn’t happen. “Let’s finish these slides.”

For the next two hours they worked in silence. But it wasn’t the same silence.

Every time Marco leaned over to point at a chart, his shoulder brushed hers. Every time Giulia reached for the same file, their hands touched.

At 1 a.m. Marco finally said, “We’re done.”

Giulia packed up her notes. “I’ll call my own car.”

“I already called it,” Marco said. “And I’m walking you down.”

The elevator was empty. Just the two of them and the sound of rain.

At the doors, Marco held it open. “Giulia.”

She stopped. “What?”

“I meant what I said. About the 30 days. About trying.”

Giulia looked at him. Tired. Honest. 19 and 27 all at once.

“Don’t make me regret saying yes,” she said.

“I won’t,” Marco said.

She got in the car. He stood in the rain until it pulled away.

Day 12 of 30. And the rules were already cracking.

The car ride back to the villa was silent. Giulia sat with her phone face-down on her lap. The deleted message burned behind her eyes. _I know why he really left you._ She did not look at Marco. She could still feel his mouth on hers. Still taste coffee and something reckless. 9 days left. Marco broke the silence first. “You’re shaking.” Giulia pulled her hand from his grip and pressed it against the window. Cold glass. “I’m fine.” “You’re not fine,” he said. “You kissed me back in front of fifty reporters. That’s not fine. That’s war.” “It was your idea,” Giulia snapped. Then softer: “Wasn’t it?” Marco didn’t answer. He stared at the road ahead, jaw tight. The CEO mask was cracked, but he wore it anyway. When they reached the villa, Sofia met them at the door. “Signorina, a package came for you.” She held out a small black box. No sender. No label. Giulia took it with both hands. Inside: a USB drive and a single printed photo. The same photo from the message. Sevent

The Bianchi boardroom was glass and steel and silence. Giulia sat beside Marco at the long table, her back straight, hands folded in her lap. The red dress was gone. Today she wore navy blue. Plain. Professional. Nothing that would make anyone believe this was real. The board of twelve men stared at her. Whispers traveled like smoke. _That’s the fiancée. The art student. The gold digger._ Giulia heard none of it. She only heard Marco’s breathing beside her. Steady. Too steady. Signore Bianchi tapped his cane once. “We begin.” For two hours, numbers filled the room. Merger terms. Share percentages. Four billion euros reduced to graphs and cold language. Giulia understood none of it. She understood the way Marco’s jaw clenched when his uncle questioned the valuation. She understood the way his fingers brushed hers under the table when Contessa said, “A CEO needs a wife who understands business, not just a pretty face.” Marco didn’t flinch. “She understands enough to know when

The Bianchi villa woke up colder than it had gone to sleep. Giulia stood at the window of the guest room, watching the Roman sun crawl over cypress trees. She had not slept. The word “tomorrow, 9am” echoed in her head like a sentence. Behind her, the dress from last night lay on the chair. Red silk. €4,000. A costume for a lie. She touched the zipper and felt sick. A knock. Soft, hesitant. “Signorina?” Sofia, the maid, slipped inside with a tray. Espresso. Cornetto. And a black folder. “Signore Bianchi’s lawyer sent this. For you to review before 9am.” Giulia took the folder. Her hands did not shake. That was new. Eight years ago, Marco’s voice would’ve made her tremble. Now, it was fear that steadied her. Fear of signing her life away. Inside: 12 pages. Legal Italian. Clauses highlighted in yellow. _Clause 4.2: In event of divorce within 5 years, spouse forfeits all personal assets to Bianchi Holdings._ _Clause 7.1: Spouse agrees to non-disclosure of family matters, v

Day 19 started with a summons, not a call.“Signore Bianchi requires your presence in Rome. Tonight. Both of you.” Marco’s assistant didn’t blink when she said it. Just handed Giulia a flight ticket and a black dress box.Giulia stared at the ticket. FCO. 8pm. “He knows.”Marco was already in his suit, tie undone, jaw tight. “He knows something. Contessa called him after dinner. Told him about the kiss at the gala. About Valentina. About how ‘public’ we’ve been.”Giulia’s stomach dropped. “Day 19 of 30. We’re not even halfway.”“Exactly.” Marco tossed his keys on the table. “Which is why we’re going. If he cancels the merger now, we lose everything.”The private jet to Rome was silent. Giulia sat by the window, watching clouds turn pink over the Apennines. Marco sat across from her, laptop open but eyes closed. Neither spoke about the kiss. Neither could.“Why did you do it?” Giulia finally asked. Voice barely above the engine noise. “In the office. You could’ve signed the papers and

“Breaking Point” Milan, Day 18. The storm hit like a warning.Giulia was soaked by the time she reached Bianchi Towers. Her blouse clung to her skin. She hadn’t meant to come. But her mom’s hospital called. Bill due. And Marco was the only one who could authorize the emergency transfer tonight. She burst into his office without knocking. “I need—”Marco was on the phone. He held up a hand, but his eyes ran over her, soaked dress to trembling lips. When he hung up, he was already moving.“Stai bene?” Are you okay?“I’m fine.” She wasn’t. “Just sign this. €35,000. Mom’s medication. Please.”Marco didn’t look at the papers. He walked to her, shrugged off his suit jacket, and draped it over her shoulders. “You’re freezing.”“It’s nothing.” She tried to pull away. “Just sign it.”He took the pen, signed, and set it down. Then he didn’t step back. “Why didn’t you call me?” he asked quietly.“Because this isn’t part of the deal.” Rain ran down her face. Or maybe tears. “30 days. No favors.

“Not Just Acting Anymore” Rome was all marble and chaos. And Valentina.Giulia saw her the second they walked into the hotel lobby for the merger press event. Red dress. Red lips. Red flags.“Marco.” Valentina’s voice was syrup over knives. “I heard the news. Engaged? How… sudden.”Marco’s arm tightened around Giulia’s waist. “Valentina. This is Giulia. My fiancée.”Valentina’s eyes raked over Giulia like she was checking for flaws. “She’s young. Pretty. But can she handle Bianchi Towers without you?”“I can,” Giulia said before Marco could. “I ran his board prep for 2 weeks. We closed the Milan deal under budget.”Valentina laughed. “Cute. But he’s not talking about board prep, tesoro.” She stepped closer to Marco. “Remember Paris? The suite at Ritz? You said I was the only woman you’d ever—”“Valentina.” Marco cut her off. “Don’t.”“Oh, she doesn’t know?” Valentina turned to Giulia, smile sweet and poisoned. “Ask him about Paris, amore. Ask him how many ‘fake’ relationships he’s h
