LIES NOVA "Two, three, four, five... I think this one is perfect." Chloe grins, as she stares at the three outfits that she's laid out on the bed. "What do you think?" I shake my head, not looking up from my phone. If she asks me one more question about her clothes again, I might actually leave her here and go and join the boys downstairs in their video game. "Come on, Nova. You've been glued to the phone for an hour." I finally look up at her. Yeah, she's definitely exaggerating. I haven't been here for an hour. I sigh, dropping my phone on the desk beside me and standing up so I can take a proper look at the clothes. "Will you promise to leave me alone after I help you pick out an outfit?" She nods rapidly which is weird. But still, I take a look at her choices. Hot damn. Her dresses are pretty good looking. I'd kill to get a blue dress like the deep blue that's in the middle. Chloe and I look nothing alike with our hair and eyes colour but we have the same body build. I still remember wearing most of her dresses last time when we visited. Nothing's changed, I see. Without thinking, I point at the blue dress. "The one would look amazing on you." I say. She folds her arms, looking at the dress and then at my face. A small smile spreads across her face. No. It better not be what I'm thinking. "I thought so too." She nods. "Chloe no." I step back. "What is it you plan on doing?" She shrugs. "Mom said you've been too busy on your phone these past few days and..." I frown. Aunt Joan didn't. Of course she can say that. What the hell does she expect me to do? I did a bad thing. I did the worst thing I could ever think of and instead of owning up to my mistakes and facing whatever it is I could have faced, my mom hid me here. It's a school week and I can't just jump into the school my cousins go to. And I certainly cannot be here and be ignorant. I mean... I need to know what's happening at school. Mom advised I take out my SIM card and stuff and I did just that. But I got a new one, thanks to Marcus and I rejoined the Ridgeview School Group on W******p. They can't blame me for staying glued to my phone for the tiniest bit of information. If I wasn't so nosy, I wouldn't know that Enzo's been preparing for a speech that his lawyers gave drawn. A speech that'll paint me the enemy and my brother as well. "Nova..." I blink. "So what? Your mom has prohibited me from using my phone?" "Mom would never." Then what? "She just thinks we should go out more. Marcus and Kol can drive us... It's not a party. It's just shopping. We'll get nice things and..." "Where?" I ask immediately. She presses her lips together. "It's not anywhere near your home. It's just... a little bit close to your school." She uses her fingers to emphasize the meaning of small. I don't even know what to say to her at this point. I'm guessing her mom knows nothing about this. It's her idea. It's hers. I can also sense Kol behind this. Marcus wouldn't know. He's the most mature. He wouldn't even think about it. "My mom brought me here for a reason, Chloe." She starts nodding. "And I know. We'll be quick. We'll be as fast as you can think of. Come on, you know how much I want to see the dresses they have in the..." "Dresses?" I ask, my eyes widening. Oh, she cannot be serious. She just said dresses. So this is about dresses? She's willing to drag me into the fiery pits of hell that my brother has unleashed in waiting just because of some dresses. "Are you being serious right now?" "I need to pick out something for..." I hold a hand and that shuts her up. "You have cute dresses. I don't own half the clothes that you own. I'm sorry, Chloe. I'm not going with you." "It's fine. I get you." She says. Even though she's not frowning, her countenance has dropped. "I'll just tell Marcus to take me." She says. Yeah, she should do that. "Do be careful, okay?" She fakes a smile. "Yes. I just pray I don't run into Noah and mistakenly tell him you're here." Fuck you, I almost tell her but I inhale, watching her realize how silly she just sounded. "That was a bad joke, obviously." She says. "It's not funny, Chloe." She nods. "I'm sorry." I watch her leave and then I take my phone and start scrolling through the group chat again. It's not like I have anything doing. It's funny how time passes while you're busy on your phone. It's been an hour since Chloe left. My back is sore and I can feel how stiff my spine is. Staying on the same spot for a long time will do that to you. The door rattles and I look up to see Marcus, holding a phone to his ear. I didn't know he was home. I thought he had driven Chloe to get the clothes she wanted to get. "What do you mean she's there?" He asks, frowning. "But how?" Now I'm curious. I sit up in the bed, looking at Marcus whose phone conversation is clearly upsetting him. "I don't know what the hell you're talking about." Marcus ends the call and looks at me. "What's happened?" I ask. "Chloe told you she was going to get clothes?" I nod. "She said she'd ask you to drive her." Marcus tilts his head. "Mom said nobody leaves. She didn't ask me shit. Kol isn't home too." "Is that bad?" "You know who called me just now? Noah. And he's seen them. Your brother is on his way here with my sister and brother." What the actual fuck?NOVA"What the hell?" My voice is a whisper even though I know Caleb is on a call and is a little bit far from where we're standing."What do you mean... what the hell? The task? The one I gave to you? The offer to be a..."I wave a hand in front of Bethany's face. "Yes, yes. I know all about that. I don't need a reminder. I just don't... I don't get what you mean by that?"Bethany folds her hands, glaring at me. "What I mean?" She repeats.I heave a sigh. "I mean I do get you but... I just...""Nova Graham! Are you going to talk to Caleb, make him fall for you and break his heart? The sisters want to see if you are a material for..."I can't with this girl right now. Caleb is still pacing but I'm sure at any moment from now he'll turn and see us. What if his call ends now and he walks over to us and hears what Bethany is saying?"Look, this is bad timing." I mutter."Why are you murmuring? He can't hear...""I don't care. He's my friend." I say, my frown deepening.Bethany smirks. "O
NOVA I blink as Enzo leaves the class, leaving me and Caleb alone. Without wasting any time, I rush to Caleb, my eyes widening as I take in the way he looks. He has a split lip and his face has a tear. There are a lot of bruises on his face. He groans when he tries to move and stays still. Noah really did hurt him a lot. What do I do now? I can't report to the school that my brother did this, can I? Fuck this. I bend down and touch Caleb's face. He scowls, pushing my hand away from his face."Don't." He mutters."You're badly hurt." I say. "You need to see the school nurse or something...""Your brother did this to me. Stop acting like you didn't see it." Caleb inhales deeply and he sits up in an upright position."Yeah, after you said stuff that made him lose his temper." I say, still standing on it. "That was a shitty thing to say, especially to Noah."Caleb scoffs. "I didn't lie about anything. I meant everything I said. Fuck!" He groans, shutting his eyes."Stay still and I'll c
NOVAI think my brother is the biggest dick that ever lived. No, I know that he is. He doesn't speak to me for days after Aunt John's place and the first thing he says to me is to get away from the new guy?Absolutely not. It's clear that they have some type of beef between them. The new guy is still seated beside me, his eyes on Noah. I don't need him to speak to know that he knows who my brother is. It's evident in the way their glaring at each other."Get away from him." Noah tells me, his eyes not meeting mine for a second. If he thinks he can tell me what to do after ignoring the fact that I exist, for days, he's genuinely mistaken."You can't tell me what to do." I speak up, folding my arms and waiting for his glare on me. Sure enough, it does come. Noah turns, fixing me with a death glare. "Are you out of your fucking mind, Nova? I asked you to get away from that trashy human now.""You don't get to ignore me for days and then...""I don't fucking care what you think. What I
NOVA Whatever they want Ava to tell me, I'm not going to stand here and listen. I don't think I want to even hear it. Curiosity is a bitch but I do feel so good about myself when I turn the other way and walk away. That feeling plummets the second a large body hits me head on. Others would say bumping but that's not what this is. Well, it's a bit of bumping and hitting. If I'd bumped into someone, I wouldn't be feeling this much dizzy and getting my head rolling. I stagger back, my brain already reeling for a befitting insult to this motherucker that I certainly have not crossed paths with before. "What is wrong with you?" I ask, raising my head to glare at him. Seriously. I don't care that I don't know this guy. I don't care that he looks clueless. Today already has enough problems for me and I don't need his headache that's incoming. "It was an accident." He says. I roll my eyes. "Oh stop. Watch where you're going, dick." I say, folding my arms, my glare still on my face.
NOVAI barely sleep. And I'm promising and being honest that it's not because of the task. It's not because of the stupid envelope sitting on my desk like some kind of threat. It's because of my Mom. The way she looked when she realized she had been setting out plates for two people who weren't coming home. The way she laughed like she could brush it off, but I saw the hurt behind her eyes. She misses them. She misses Noah and Enzo. And maybe I'm selfish for thinking this, but it hurts knowing that they're not only avoiding me. They're avoiding her too.I understand Noah being angry. I understand Enzo wanting nothing to do with me. I deserve whatever anger they have toward me.But Mom? She didn't do anything. If I find either of them at school today, or cross paths with them, I'm taking my chances and starting a conversation.I don't know how. I don't know if they'll even let me get close enough to explain myself. If they still hate me after hearing the truth and all they're doing to
NOVAMy back hurts so bad. And it's not even because I've been busy helping Mom in the kitchen all evening making Noah's favourite. It's not because I feel so stiff as I make my way to my room.I think it's because I'd been carrying my backpack all day. With the envelope inside of it, I have trust issues. I didn't want anybody to find it first. Since I don't know what's in the envelope, it's safer there.I still can't believe I'm about to be a sorority girl. Well, if I can complete whatever task Bethany and her friends want me to. Hearing Gia and Serenity's tasks, I'm sure mine will be much worse.I don't think I give a fuck either. Whatever it is, I'm sure I can do it. Can't be anything worse than what the school thinks I did. Yes. I'm more optimistic now than this afternoon. "Baby, dinner's ready. Come on downstairs!" Mom's voice rings in my ears just as I grab my backpack. I dig into it, my fingers grasping the envelope, tearing it open just so I can see what's in it before dinner
