Chapter 2

Author: Moon Down
The following morning, I returned to Jameston Manor with only Hilda.

I hadn't finished sorting out the property I had brought into the marriage. I had only come to tell my parents that I had signed the divorce agreement.

The gatekeeper recognized the Page family's carriage and hurried in to announce my arrival.

When I walked into the main hall, my parents, my brother, and my sister-in-law were all waiting.

As soon as I set the divorce agreement on the table, my father, Ronan Jameston, asked, "When is Lord Page going to marry Juliet?"

Not one of them asked how I felt about the end of my marriage of six years.

"I don't know when the wedding will be," I replied. "I returned today to let you both know that I'll be living here for a while. And I have no intention of marrying Josiah."

Father's expression darkened at once. "Lord Page chose a husband for you himself. It's a mark of respect for our family. If you call off the marriage, you'll offend both Josiah and Lord Page."

My elder brother, Merlin Jameston, frowned as well. "Sebastian mentioned yesterday that once things had settled down at home, he could recommend me for a position in the War Office.

"You'd be marrying his most trusted second-in-command. From then on, the Page, Hewitt, and Jameston families would truly be one."

My sister-in-law, Valeria Wright, spoke up beside Merlin. "Isolde, even if you won't consider your own future, you should at least think of Merlin's."

I glanced at her. "Juliet's marriage buys our family influence, while mine buys Merlin a government post. What do I get in return?"

My mother, Edwina Moore, avoided my gaze. "General Hewitt swore he would take no mistresses. If you marry him, you'll be the only woman he'll ever have. Isn't that all a woman can hope for in life? Juliet has already waited six years. You can't make her lose Sebastian because of you again."

I heard footsteps from behind the folding screen.

Juliet stepped out. "If Isolde refuses to remarry, then I won't marry Sebastian either."

Mother stood up at once. "Juliet, don't be ridiculous!"

Juliet shook her head. "If she vows never to marry again after the divorce, what will people say? They'll say I stole her husband and drove her out of her own home."

I fixed my eyes on Juliet. "You don't actually want to give Sebastian up. You only want me out of the way before you marry him."

She stepped forward and spoke under her breath. "If you never settle down with someone else, Sebastian will always feel guilty about you. I won't have my husband spend the rest of his life worrying about his former wife."

Father slammed his hand on the table. "That's enough! You will agree to this marriage, whether you want to or not."

"And what if I refuse?" I asked.

"Then you'll go and repent in the chapel," Father said. "You can come out when you have come to your senses."

I turned and walked out.

Hilda hurried after me, but Merlin stopped her. "Father only wants her to reflect on what she has done. You're not allowed to follow her."

…

The sun was still up when I walked into the chapel.

I only had to be on my knees for a few hours. I could endure that.

But after nightfall, rain began to fall. The stone tiles grew damp, and the chill slowly seeped into my knees.

Hilda came running with a cloak and hot water. "Ms. Isolde has old injuries. Please, let me inside!"

Merlin blocked the doorway. "Father gave his orders. No one can enter until Isolde admits her mistakes."

Valeria tugged at his sleeve. "It's so cold out here. Couldn't we at least let her have the cloak?"

Merlin shook her off. "If she breaks off the marriage, I'll lose my chance at a post in the War Office. Whose side are you on?"

Valeria looked down and said nothing more.

Before long, Mother arrived too. She had her hand on the door latch. "Isolde, just agree to the marriage, and I'll take you back to your room."

"I won't agree," I replied.

Mother stood there for a long while before finally taking her hand off the door.

Juliet took the cloak from Mother. "Go back, Mother. If she really can't bear it, she'll give in."

As daybreak neared, Juliet stood outside the door again.

"Isolde, have you come to your senses?" she asked.

I braced myself against the altar and slowly stood up. "I have. You're not worried that I'll refuse to remarry. You're afraid that even after I give up my place as his wife, Sebastian still won't be able to forget the six years we shared."

I had barely taken a step when my knees gave way, and I fell heavily to the ground.

Silence fell outside the door for a moment.

Juliet started to push the door open, then hesitated.

"Inform Father first. Don't let her use this to win sympathy and get out of it."

On the seventh day after my death, the elders of the Page family gathered at the family chapel. They refused to let me be buried in the family plot."Isolde signed the divorce agreement and was sent to the Hewitt family. Even though the marriage never took place, she can no longer be buried in our family plot as part of our family."Sebastian pulled out the copy of the divorce agreement kept at his manor and threw it into the brazier in front of all the elders."I was the one who asked to end the marriage, and I forced her to marry someone else. Isolde never betrayed our family. We were the ones who failed her."The elders still refused to change their minds.Sebastian brought over the family register and set it on the altar."If anyone denies Isolde a place in our family plot, I will have my own name struck from the family register today. If she has no place in the Page family, then neither do I."Martha tried to reason with him through tear-filled eyes. "Sebastian, she's gone.

Sebastian took the secret letters to the High Court's prison.Juliet was still wearing her wedding dress. She had been locked up for three days, but she hadn't lost hope.As soon as Sebastian walked in, she jumped to her feet. "Sebastian, I know you're upset. But I never wanted Isolde dead. Once this is all cleared up, we can still have our wedding."Sebastian tossed the letters in front of her.Juliet took one look at them, and all the color drained from her face. "I didn't write them.""The handwriting, your personal seal, and the messenger's testimony have all been verified.""Prince Alistair forced me to do it!" Juliet seized the bars, panic rising in her eyes. "He wanted me back then. If I refused him, my whole family would suffer. What else could I do?"The palace attendant who had come with Sebastian unfolded another letter. "Prince Alistair, I am willing to marry you and serve you. Sebastian is nothing but a soldier. He is unlikely to survive his trip to the border. Ev

Three days after I died, Sebastian went to the palace. The new king, Frederick Lancaster, didn't make him kneel for long."Are you here to seek justice for Isolde Jameston, or to answer for what you've done?"Sebastian kept his head lowered."For both reasons. I failed her by allowing the Jameston family to force her to remarry. Your Majesty, I ask you to punish me as I deserve and investigate her whole family."Frederick ordered a sealed box brought in."Two weeks ago, border troops captured one of Alistair's men in the north. He once handled Alistair's private letters and hidden accounts."When Alistair was overthrown, he escaped the capital with his case. "He and the evidence have now been brought back under guard. The handwriting, seals, and accounts have undergone preliminary verification."Frederick fixed his gaze on Sebastian. "It was only yesterday that I learned the king's decision to arrange your marriage six years ago was no coincidence."Sebastian opened the box.

Sebastian had ice brought from the ice cellar. He used it to make a bed of ice in my suite. He refused to let them close my coffin.Hilda was found in the Jameston Manor's woodshed. Both her hands were raw and bloody from climbing over the wall. She rushed into my suite and collapsed beside me, sobbing so hard she almost passed out.Sebastian stood outside the door. “Why didn't she send someone to ask me for help?”Hilda whipped around. "Ms. Isolde begged you for help three times, my lord!"She continued, "The first time, she asked you to cancel the engagement. You told her to wait seven days. The second time, she came to you with injuries from kneeling all night, and you still told her to wait."When she asked for help the third time, she told you that her family would force her into the marriage."Hilda seized the packet of medicine from the table and hurled it at Sebastian."Lord Page, it's not that she didn't ask for help. Every time she begged you, you pushed her one step

Sebastian waited outside the whole time the coroner examined my body. He tried to go inside, but Josiah blocked his way."Isolde is already dead. Do you still have to let them violate her dignity?" Sebastian asked."If I don't have her examined, no one can prove she was murdered," Josiah replied.Josiah tossed the bloodstained sash at Sebastian's feet. "My lord, if you truly want justice for her, then wait."The coroner emerged half an hour later."The deceased has marks from being bound at both wrists and injuries from kneeling. Her fever had not yet broken."The cause of death was tight binding around her chest and abdomen, combined with an object stuffed into her mouth that blocked her breathing. She fought desperately for her life."Sebastian asked, "How did she injure her knees?"Another wedding chaperone suddenly burst into tears. "Mr. Jameston Sr. made her kneel in the family chapel. Ms. Isolde refused to marry, so she had to kneel all night. Today, her brother ordered u

The doctor Josiah had summoned crouched beside the carriage. He checked my breathing, then felt for a pulse at my neck.A moment later, he slowly drew back his hand."She's gone."Josiah's arms tightened around me.The wedding chaperone escorting me tried to slip away, but one of Josiah's guards seized her and forced her to the ground."Seal the gates," Josiah said. "No one is allowed to touch the carriage, the sash, or the handkerchief."The Jameston family's steward hurried forward."General Hewitt, Ms. Isolde caught a chill a few days ago. She must have suffered a sudden attack on the way."Josiah drew his dagger and lifted the silk sash wrapped around my chest."You call this an illness? Then why tie her hands behind her back? Why gag her?"The steward turned deathly pale and couldn't answer.Conrad, Sebastian's personal attendant, arrived just then to check on the wedding. He had come to confirm that the ceremony was complete. But the moment he saw my limp hand and the
