Chapter 3

Author: Moon Down
By the time I woke, it was almost noon.

The doctor Mother sent for said I had caught a chill and developed a fever. My knee injuries would heal after a few days of rest.

Father wouldn't let me stay in my room.

"You haven't moved out all of your belongings from Page Manor, and there are still the household accounts to hand over," he said. "Finish it all today. Don't let Lord Page think our family can't get things done."

Those things belonged to me in the first place. I had every right to take them back. After this, there would be no reason to return.

When the carriage reached Page Manor, Hilda helped me out.

I used to walk the entire corridor without stopping, taking care of household matters along the way. Now, after only a few steps, my knees were trembling with pain.

I gripped Hilda's hand and said, "We mustn't let anyone notice."

As soon as I entered the main courtyard, I ran into Mother, who had brought Juliet with her.

I had come to collect my belongings. Juliet was there to discuss her wedding dress and the wedding feast.

My trunks were carried out one by one, while bolts of fabric for Juliet's wedding dress and catalogs of jewelry were being carried in.

Sebastian's mother, Martha Newman, asked Juliet to serve the tea. Juliet knew Martha's preference for strong tea, so she had the maid add extra tea leaves.

I reached out to stop them. "Martha has been taking medicine lately. The doctor said she mustn't drink strong tea."

Martha's expression darkened at once. "It's Juliet's first visit as Sebastian's future wife, and you're already finding fault? You've signed the divorce agreement. Stop acting like you're still the lady of this house!"

"Mother." Sebastian's voice came from outside the door.

He took a look at the preion, then set the teacup back on the table.

"Isolde managed this household for six years," he said. "She never took your health lightly. If she had meant to embarrass Juliet, she could have simply kept quiet."

Juliet set down the teacup, her eyes red-rimmed with tears. "Please don't blame Isolde, Lady Martha. She managed the household for six years, after all. It's only natural that she hasn't learned to let go yet."

Juliet turned to Sebastian, her voice growing softer. "But if I have to call Isolde back to handle every matter after marrying into this family, people will make fun of you, Sebastian."

"No one is asking Isolde to keep managing the household," Sebastian said.

Then he turned to me. "Write down Mother's medication, the household's affairs, and anything else that is important. Juliet can learn from your notes. You won't have to trouble yourself with any of this again."

"Juliet is taking my place, and now I'm supposed to teach her how to be your wife?" I asked.

"I just don't want the household to fall into disorder."

"I've already handed over the accounts and keys." I placed the household seal on the table, setting the jade pendant beside it. "As for your dietary restrictions and old injuries, Juliet can remember those herself from now on."

As I stood, my knees suddenly gave way.

Sebastian caught me by the arm.

I sucked in a sharp breath from the pain and instinctively shifted my weight off my injured knees.

He looked down, noticed the dust on my skirt, and his expression darkened. "Were you made to kneel as punishment?"

Hilda could no longer hold back. "It was Mr. Jameston Sr. Ms. Isolde refused to marry General Hewitt, so she was made to repent in the chapel all night. They wouldn't even let me bring her a cloak."

Sebastian turned to look at Juliet.

Juliet burst into tears at once. "Father was furious. I didn't dare go against him. I never thought Isolde would actually fall ill."

Sebastian closed his eyes for a moment. "I'll send someone to Jameston Manor with a message. No one is to subject her to such punishments again."

I looked at him. "If you truly think they were wrong, then call off the engagement for me now. All you have to do is say the match is off, and they won't dare force me again."

Sebastian remained silent for a long while.

"I'll make sure they don't punish you again," he said finally. "We'll discuss the marriage when the seven days are up."

"You feel sorry for me when I'm punished. But as long as calling off the engagement would put Juliet in a difficult position, you think I can bear a little more."

I left Page Manor with my belongings.

Sebastian hurried after me to the carriage and pressed the pendant back into my hand. "Remember to take your medicine on time. I'll visit you at Jameston Manor in a couple of days."

I didn't lower the carriage's curtain right away. "Sebastian, you know they'll force me into this marriage just to curry favor with you. Yet you still expect me to go home and wait a few more days?"

Sebastian's lips moved as if he wanted to say something. In the end, he said only, "We'll speak again when the seven days are up, as agreed."

I lowered the carriage curtain.

The coachman was about to crack his whip when Juliet's voice rang out from the steps.

"Sebastian, are you finding it hard to let Isolde go?"

Through the curtain, I heard nothing from Sebastian for a long time. Then he said, "She was my wife for six years."

The carriage rolled out of Page Manor.

I could no longer sit upright, so I slowly leaned against Hilda's shoulder.

On the seventh day after my death, the elders of the Page family gathered at the family chapel. They refused to let me be buried in the family plot."Isolde signed the divorce agreement and was sent to the Hewitt family. Even though the marriage never took place, she can no longer be buried in our family plot as part of our family."Sebastian pulled out the copy of the divorce agreement kept at his manor and threw it into the brazier in front of all the elders."I was the one who asked to end the marriage, and I forced her to marry someone else. Isolde never betrayed our family. We were the ones who failed her."The elders still refused to change their minds.Sebastian brought over the family register and set it on the altar."If anyone denies Isolde a place in our family plot, I will have my own name struck from the family register today. If she has no place in the Page family, then neither do I."Martha tried to reason with him through tear-filled eyes. "Sebastian, she's gone.

Sebastian took the secret letters to the High Court's prison.Juliet was still wearing her wedding dress. She had been locked up for three days, but she hadn't lost hope.As soon as Sebastian walked in, she jumped to her feet. "Sebastian, I know you're upset. But I never wanted Isolde dead. Once this is all cleared up, we can still have our wedding."Sebastian tossed the letters in front of her.Juliet took one look at them, and all the color drained from her face. "I didn't write them.""The handwriting, your personal seal, and the messenger's testimony have all been verified.""Prince Alistair forced me to do it!" Juliet seized the bars, panic rising in her eyes. "He wanted me back then. If I refused him, my whole family would suffer. What else could I do?"The palace attendant who had come with Sebastian unfolded another letter. "Prince Alistair, I am willing to marry you and serve you. Sebastian is nothing but a soldier. He is unlikely to survive his trip to the border. Ev

Three days after I died, Sebastian went to the palace. The new king, Frederick Lancaster, didn't make him kneel for long."Are you here to seek justice for Isolde Jameston, or to answer for what you've done?"Sebastian kept his head lowered."For both reasons. I failed her by allowing the Jameston family to force her to remarry. Your Majesty, I ask you to punish me as I deserve and investigate her whole family."Frederick ordered a sealed box brought in."Two weeks ago, border troops captured one of Alistair's men in the north. He once handled Alistair's private letters and hidden accounts."When Alistair was overthrown, he escaped the capital with his case. "He and the evidence have now been brought back under guard. The handwriting, seals, and accounts have undergone preliminary verification."Frederick fixed his gaze on Sebastian. "It was only yesterday that I learned the king's decision to arrange your marriage six years ago was no coincidence."Sebastian opened the box.

Sebastian had ice brought from the ice cellar. He used it to make a bed of ice in my suite. He refused to let them close my coffin.Hilda was found in the Jameston Manor's woodshed. Both her hands were raw and bloody from climbing over the wall. She rushed into my suite and collapsed beside me, sobbing so hard she almost passed out.Sebastian stood outside the door. “Why didn't she send someone to ask me for help?”Hilda whipped around. "Ms. Isolde begged you for help three times, my lord!"She continued, "The first time, she asked you to cancel the engagement. You told her to wait seven days. The second time, she came to you with injuries from kneeling all night, and you still told her to wait."When she asked for help the third time, she told you that her family would force her into the marriage."Hilda seized the packet of medicine from the table and hurled it at Sebastian."Lord Page, it's not that she didn't ask for help. Every time she begged you, you pushed her one step

Sebastian waited outside the whole time the coroner examined my body. He tried to go inside, but Josiah blocked his way."Isolde is already dead. Do you still have to let them violate her dignity?" Sebastian asked."If I don't have her examined, no one can prove she was murdered," Josiah replied.Josiah tossed the bloodstained sash at Sebastian's feet. "My lord, if you truly want justice for her, then wait."The coroner emerged half an hour later."The deceased has marks from being bound at both wrists and injuries from kneeling. Her fever had not yet broken."The cause of death was tight binding around her chest and abdomen, combined with an object stuffed into her mouth that blocked her breathing. She fought desperately for her life."Sebastian asked, "How did she injure her knees?"Another wedding chaperone suddenly burst into tears. "Mr. Jameston Sr. made her kneel in the family chapel. Ms. Isolde refused to marry, so she had to kneel all night. Today, her brother ordered u

The doctor Josiah had summoned crouched beside the carriage. He checked my breathing, then felt for a pulse at my neck.A moment later, he slowly drew back his hand."She's gone."Josiah's arms tightened around me.The wedding chaperone escorting me tried to slip away, but one of Josiah's guards seized her and forced her to the ground."Seal the gates," Josiah said. "No one is allowed to touch the carriage, the sash, or the handkerchief."The Jameston family's steward hurried forward."General Hewitt, Ms. Isolde caught a chill a few days ago. She must have suffered a sudden attack on the way."Josiah drew his dagger and lifted the silk sash wrapped around my chest."You call this an illness? Then why tie her hands behind her back? Why gag her?"The steward turned deathly pale and couldn't answer.Conrad, Sebastian's personal attendant, arrived just then to check on the wedding. He had come to confirm that the ceremony was complete. But the moment he saw my limp hand and the
