“Can I ask you something?” Olivia started as Rob helped her clear the table.

“What’s that?” Rob asked, suspicious.

“You have to promise to be completely honest.” Olivia urged.

“I think I can do that.” Rob agreed, curious to know what she wanted to ask.

Olivia let the suspense loom between them until they finished clearing the table and were seated alone in the kitchen. The housekeeper had gone to bed early, so it was unlikely that anyone would overhear them.

Standing on opposite sides of the kitchen island helped Olivia get a clear view of Rob. She would be able to watch his reaction very carefully.

“What is Desmond’s connection with Gerald Gilbert?” She asked directly.

Rob flinched, startled. He was stunned for several minutes before regaining composure. “Why are you asking me this? Have you asked Desmond?”

Olivia wanted to, but she had a hunch that he would smoothly deny it. “No, I have not.” She admitted.
