Serena's POV

I wrapped my arms around him reflexively, my face against his chest. His heart was slow and strong. For one second, there was only that, the two of us, the hard beat that made the world not quite so crazy.

"Don't tell me," I whispered, my voice buried in the cloth of his shirt, "that you're going to leave me alone to handle all of this."

He braced, then pulled away just far enough to look down at me. His expression was tranquil, but his eyes were sharp. "You don't need me anymore, Serena."

The words stung like a small punch. Not because they weren't true, I had grown stronger, more deadly, but because they carried the tone of a verdict, a shutting of the book on something I wasn't ready to finish.

I had opened my mouth to protest, to explain to him that I did need him, that I wanted him present, but he got there first.

"I'm not saying I won't be here," he told me in a rush, catching the flash of terror on my face. "I'll be here. But you're not that helpless woman you used

Serena's POVSophia sighed. “You don’t have to justify anything to me. Or to anyone.”“I should,” I whispered. “I walked away from him. I chose revenge. I chose power. I chose to build something that could never be touched again.”“And now?”“And now he’s here.” I pressed my fingers to my forehead. “Why is he here?”Sophia shrugged helplessly. “Maybe he wants closure. Maybe he’s running from something."My chest tightened painfully. Before I could respond, my phone lit up on the desk.Unknown number.I frowned, hesitating… then answered.“Serena.”My heart dropped. Alexander’s voice.Still deep. Still steady. Still the only voice that reached places I tried so hard to kill.“I need to see you,” he said. “Now.”“Why?”“You’re in danger.” His voice was strained, urgent. “James knows you own Diamond Company.”My stomach turned to stone.“Alexander, what did you—”“Serena, he wants you dead.” His breath shook. “He said he’ll kill you within twenty-four hours.”Sophia’s eyes widened.“Wher

Alexander's POVDarla was talking about something, traffic, or the weather, or maybe the color of the sky, but I wasn’t listening. My mind had been drifting a lot lately, pulled to a place I didn’t want to visit. A place with her in it.The vibrating phone on the dashboard snapped me back.James.I answered. “Yeah?”“Alex,” James said, voice tight, urgent. “I need to see you. Now. It’s important. Partner-to-partner talk.”I straightened a little. “What is it about?”“You’ll hear it when you get here. Just come. Novatech. Twenty minutes.”I paused. Something in his voice felt off. But I said, “Fine. I’ll be there.”The call ended.Darla leaned closer. “Everything okay?”“Yeah,” I lied. “Just business.”“Business” in Sunderland usually meant trouble. Trouble with teeth.I shifted into drive. “We need to head to Novatech.”She nodded. “Okay.”The rest of the ride was quiet. Darla sensed things fast, but she didn’t pry. I appreciated that. My thoughts were too loud anyway, too messy.Wh

Serena's POVDamien shook his head. “That’s not my answer.”Sophia lifted a brow. “Then what is your answer?”He ran his hand through his hair. “I said I like Pristine. Yes. But I’m not picking her. Pristine only wants me because she can’t figure me out. I’m mysterious to her.""And the moment she understands me, she’ll lose interest. That’s how she is. She’s not trained to love, and I’m not sure she even knows what it means to love someone. I can’t build anything with her.”Sophia and I exchanged a look, half disbelief, half relief, though I wasn’t about to admit the relief part out loud.I swallowed and forced myself to speak. “Damien… I’m sorry. I shouldn’t have assumed. I jumped to conclusions.”He didn’t say anything, but his expression softened slightly.Sophia folded her arms again. “So what now? Do you want to remain single? Because you don't want Pristine, and you obviously don’t want me, so who exactly are you going with?”Before Damien could answer, before I could even proc

Serena's POVI stood there frozen, staring at Pristine as she strutted out of the office like she owned the entire building. Her perfume lingered in the air long after she disappeared, but I forced myself to tear my eyes away and turn back to Damien. My chest felt tight, hot, angry. I didn’t want to show it, but I knew Damien could read me like an open book.“So,” I said, forcing my voice to stay steady, “Pristine and Damien are a thing now.”He blinked as if the question offended him. “We’re not a thing.”I let out a humorless laugh. “Damien, I’m not blind. I saw you two kissing.”Right on cue, Sophia walked in. “Saw who was kissing?”“Pristine and Damien,” I said, not bothering to hide the edge in my voice.Sophia’s eyes nearly popped out of her head. “Damien, please tell me Serena isn’t telling the truth.”Damien shrugged, shrugged. “She kissed me. I wasn’t expecting it and I couldn’t exactly push her away.”I felt something in me twist. I shook my head slowly. “From the way I sa

Pristine's POVDamien’s question hung in the air between us.“Do you know what Alexander is doing in Sunderland?” he asked, his voice calm, but the sharpness in his eyes betrayed how badly he wanted that answer.I blinked innocently, tilting my head. “I have no idea,” I said truthfully, or at least truthfully enough. “But…” I let the word linger, slow and deliberate, “I can help you find out if you want.”His brows lifted slightly. “That’s funny.” He leaned back in his chair, folding his arms over that annoyingly perfect chest. “You’re willing to let me use you to spy on Alexander?”I smiled. “Anything for you, Damien. I’d do anything for you.”His expression flickered, hesitation, suspicion, maybe even curiosity. “Hmm.”That sound… the way it rumbled in his chest… It did too many things for me. My eyes drifted there, to the solid sculpted lines I had imagined touching more times than I’d ever admit aloud. God, it was practically carved from temptation.“By the way,” I said casually

Pristine's POVDamien stared at me like he was trying to decode a language he’d never seen before.“What do you mean,” he asked, voice low and controlled, “by saying you want to know where you stand?”I leaned slightly against the edge of Serena’s desk, crossing my legs slowly just to watch him react. His eyes flickered, just a small shift, but I caught it.“Come on, Damien,” I said, smiling. “Don’t pretend you don’t know. Like, for instance…” I tilted my head playfully. “When are you going to invite me out for a date?”He blinked and immediately looked away. “Pristine, you’re my client, not my—”I cut him off with a loud, amused laugh. “Please. So was Serena. Your precious Serena was also your client. But that never stopped you from being completely in love with her.”He inhaled sharply, the kind of breath people take when they’re trying not to react.I’d hit the nerve I wanted.“So let’s not hide behind rules,” I added lightly. “You don’t follow them anyway.”Damien’s jaw tightened
